Some Backgound Info and a Short Bio of Dwight Howard
His ChildhoodDwight David Howard was born on December 8, 1985. He was raised in Atlanta, Georgia by Dwight Sr, and Sheryl Howard. Dwight's parents were very athletic individuals as well. His father is a Georgia State Trooper and serves as Athletic Director of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, a private academy with one of the best high school basketball programs in the country. Sheryl, his mother, played basketball at Morris Brown College.
At the age of nine Dwight decided to focus his attention on basketball. Even at this early age, his ultimate goal was to be selected as the number one pick in the NBA one day. Howard grew up in a strong Christian family and he chose to attend Southwest Christian Academy to play high school basketball. He spent most of his time playing power forward and averaged 16 points per game, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks.
In 2004, Dwight's senior year, he and his teammates captured the state title. He was given all sorts of awards that year including; Naismith Prep Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year, and McDonald's High School Player of the Year just to name a few.
Life in the NBA
In 2004 Dwight Howard chose not to attend college and went straight into the NBA draft. On June 24th, 2004 he realized his childhood dream and was chosen by the Orlando Magic as the number one pick.
Howard had an immediate impact on the Orlando Magic team. His rookie season he averaged 12 points per game and 10 rebounds. As a result of his success, he was chosen to play in the 2005 NBA Got Milk? Rookie Challenge and was selected to the All-Rookie team.
That summer, Dwight Howard hit the weight room HARD and came back to camp for his second year with 20 pounds of extra muscle. They instantly moved him to play the center position and helped him to improve his defense and post-up game. Dwight Howard has continued to post very impressive numbers each year of his NBA career. Not only that, he is very reliable and rarely misses a game. In fact he played in all 82 games in each of his first four years in the NBA.
Howard is very active in the community and reaches out to his fans. He is a devout Christian and regularly contributes to many different charaties. When he is back at home in Atlanta, he attends the Fellowship of Faith Church and is actively involved in the church's youth programs. In 2004 Dwight and his parents developed the Dwight D. Howard Foundation which provides scholarships for students who want to attend Southwest Christian Academy, a private school and Dwight's alma mater. Also, in 2005 Howard received the Rich De Vos Community Enrichment Award for his contributions to the Orlando and Central Florida communities.
