How it works, as best I know.

E-Sword uses Microsoft Access databases for its files. Bible files have the bbl extension, Commentaries files have the cmt extension, dictionary files have the dic extension, Topic files have the top extension, and Graphics files have the extension map. The other file format is step files which I am unfamiliar with.
