E Counseling Vs. Face to Face and in Person Therapy

E counseling has been a popular way to access counseling therapy for several years now. Most of this is either done by email or by a combination of email, phone and instant messaging. There is a lot of debate over the effectiveness of this type of counseling vs. in person therapy. There are a lot of positive benefits to E Counseling just as there are with face to face therapy. This lens is here to tell you that there is a way to combine both. Read on.

The Demand for Online Counseling Therapists

Time to Think Outside the Box

There is a demand for online counseling therapists. Long term studies have shown (posted here in this lens) that telephone therapy has been more successful than traditional in person therapy and there are a lot of reasons for that. For reasons such as depression, insecurity, fear and lack of trust, many clients don't want to leave their homes. Clients feel safer not having to visit a therapists office. Times are changing! It is time to think outside of the box.

E-Counseling , cyber counseling and phone counseling have become huge, but there is a shortage of therapists willing to get on board! These "key words" are being typed into search engines like Google by clients looking for assistance. This lens is discovered far more often by clients seeking online help, then it is found by mental health professionals seeking information about online counseling business opportunities. The clients are looking for options. It is time for the professional to get on board in order to meet that demand. The future of everything is online, including mental health recovery.

Clients Stick with Phone Therapy LONGER!

Patients Stay With Phone Psychotherapy Longer Than Office Visits

ScienceDaily (2008-09-23) -- The problem with psychotherapy is that nearly half the patients quit going to the therapist's office after a few sessions. But a new meta-analysis has found that when patients receive psychotherapy for depression over the phone, more than 90 percent continue with it. The study is the first national "snapshot" of telephone-administered therapy. This therapy, which appears to be as effective for reducing depression as face-to-face therapy, is becoming more prevalent. ... > read full article

Traditional in Person Therapy Less Effective for Long Term?

Group Health study in the April Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology

Phone-based Therapy Eases Depression Long Term

ScienceDaily (2007-03-27) -- When people receive brief telephone-based psychotherapy soon after starting antidepressant medication, strong positive effects may continue 18 months after their first session. So concludes a Group Health study in the April Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. With close to 400 patients, this is the largest study yet of psychotherapy delivered by phone. It's also the first to study the effectiveness of combining phone-based therapy with antidepressant drug treatment as provided in everyday medical practice. ... > read full article

I was a bit surprised too, and excited since this is an area of major interrest to me. This is a hot topic in the counseling world today. It will be interrested to follow the changes, and I plan to do just that.

Interesting. I would have guessed people stick with in-person therapy longer than phone therapy, but the Science Daily article is an eye opener.
