EE Hibbard's Sculpture

Seeing images underneath the rock's surface.

Everett Hibbard once described his sculpture to me as "seeing an animal or other form just under the surface of the rock, and scrapping away just enough of the rock to let the animal out...". He and his wife travelled the western part of the country. He would look for rocks that suggested shapes to him and bring them home to work with. He studied the rock to see what the animal was thinking or doing. Then the scrapping and carving brought out the image he saw in nature. Checkout the "Thoughtful Gorilla" he saw in this palm sized rock.

Elephant Salaam

a sculpture . . .

EE Hibbard fashioned Elephant Salaam in 1978. He looked at the front surface of the rock and saw an elephant kneeling. He cut and shaped the rock to release his "Elephant Salaam". Picture 1 shows the front rock surface and the kneeling elephant. Picture 2 shows his signature, title and date. Picture three shows the elephants head and the trunk that curls along the bottom and around the rock surface. Picture 4 shows the elephant's rear and the tail that follows the edge of the stone.
