Extrverted Sensing Thinking Judging

ESTJs thrive on order and continuity. Being extraverted, their focus involves organization of people, which translates into supervision. While ENTJs enjoy organizing and mobilizing people according to their own theories and tactically based agendas, ESTJs are content to enforce "the rules," often dictated by tradition or handed down from a higher authority.

ESTJs are joiners. They seek out like-minded companions in clubs, civic groups, churches and other service organizations. The need for belonging is woven into the fiber of SJs. The family likewise is a central focus for ESTJs, and attendance at such events as weddings, funerals and family reunions is obligatory.

Tradition is important to the ESTJ. Holidays, birthdays and other annual celebrations are remembered and observed often religiously by this type. The ESTJ is inclined to seek out his roots, to trace the family heritage back to honored ancestors both for a sense of family respectability and for a sense of security and belonging.

Service, the tangible expression of responsibility, is another key focus for ESTJs. They love to provide and to receive good service. The ESTJ merchant who provides dependable service has done much to enhance her self image.

ESTJs have an acute sense for orthodoxy. Much of their evaluation of persons and activities reflects their strong sense of what is "normal" and what isn't. ESTJ humor is frequently centered around something or someone being off center or behaving abnormally.

ESTJs promote the work ethic. Power, position and prestige should be worked for and earned. Laziness is rarely viewed with ambivalence nor benevolence by this type.

ESTJ's are highly responsible people who work well in hierarchies found in most large organizations. They like to organize complex activities and are undaunted by large tasks, especially those that require action rather than theorizing. ESTJ's are comfortable managing others, but do not usually enjoy writing-they may find it too abstract or passive. However, ESTJ's tend to persevere in any task they undertake, so they will stay with the writing assignment. They generally prefer writing about concrete topics, such as how-to guides.

Supervisor Guardians are squarely on the side of rules and procedures, and they can be quite serious about seeing to it that others toe the mark-or else face the consequences. They do not hesitate to give their stamp of approval, nor do they withhold their directions or suggestions for improvement. Like seasoned, stalwart umpires, Supervisors will set their jaw and make the call on anyone who steps up to bat. They even feel obligated to do so, and they're sometimes surprised when others don't seem grateful for being set straight.

ESTJ--The Enforcer
ESTJs are doers who roll up their sleeves, dig in, and proceed directly to get the job done. They use logic and analysis as guiding principles for their lives. They are quick to decide and set a plan of action. They marshall resources in an organized fashion, implement, and follow through. They like closure. They focus directly on tasks to accomplish and are able to anticipate the steps needed to complete an assignment. In doing so, they see what might go wrong and take the necessary preventive action. They monitor events continually and make sure that commitments, both their won and those of others, are honored and the job gets done. They are at their best in situations that have some structure to them and involve activity, not contemplation, and in which an end product is desired.

From Conversations with Implementer Supervisors
I like for things to be organized, and when they are not, I'm great at getting them organized.

I am very strong on work ethic and expect that from others. I cannot just sit around and do nothing for very long, especially if I have a lot to do and I don't have a plan. I am extremely organized when I work and I can work on four or five things through the course of the day. I think about what I have to do on the way to work or the way home or the night before. It's very gratifying to work extremely hard and sacrifice in order to take care of people, and I like when people appreciate that I have given of myself for them. I feel a lot of responsibility for what goes on when I have put time and effort into something and want to see that continue.

ESTJ Organizinf Profile
People who prefer Sensing like to take in information that is real and tangible - what is actually happening. They are observant about the specifics of what is going on around them and are especially tuned into practical realities. People who prefer Judging like to live in a planned, orderly way, seeking to regulate and manage their lives. Sticking to a plan and schedule is important to them, and they are energized by getting things done. As a consequence, organizing comes naturally to people with SJ type preferences, and ESTJs may even be the most organized of all the types.

ESTjs have a characteristic upright posture often appearing as if their backs are inflexible giving the impression that they are executing a military drill. In many cases ESTjs are slim. However, larger ESTjs are not exceptional, especially when applied to women. But even in these cases the figure retains its characteristic upright posture.
Dame Games - ESTJ
You are social and outgoing. You are most comfortable when with other people and experiencing the world first hand. Interaction with others and first hand experiences energize you. It is not unlike you to start conversations with strangers. You have a preference for the outer world: people, activities, and things. Other people provide you with a mirror, sounding board to help you develop ideas and plans. Being alone may sap your energies. Your concept of the world is derived from experiencing it firsthand and then drawing conclusions.

What Makes an ESTJ Tick

  • The Dominant function is the judging one of Thinking. Characteristics associated with this function include:

    * Likes making decisions on the basis of logic, using objective considerations
    * Is concerned with truth, principles and justice
    * Is analytical and critical, tending to see the flaws in situations
    * Takes an objective approach
  • The judging Thinking function is extraverted. That is, Thinking is used primarily to govern the outer world of actions and spoken words. The ESTJ will therefore:

    * organise life in on a logical basis, classifying, ordering, and directing facts and situations
    * be decisive, with the aim of being just and fair
    * spontaneously criticise
    * be comfortable with conflict as a way of resolving problems
    * take an impersonal approach, focusing more on systems and organisational needs than each individuals' feelings
  • The Thinking function is primarily supported by introverted Sensing perception. That is, Sensing perception is used primarily to manage the inner world of thoughts and emotions. This will modify the way that the Thinking is directed, by:

    * focusing the (outer world) Thinking on practical decisions that lead to tried and trusted ways of organising or solving problems
    * focusing decisions on immediate considerations - e.g.: short term costs and benefits, and the next step

Contributions to the Team

  • In a team environment, the ESTJ can contribute by:

    * working hard and efficiently to complete tasks by the deadlines set
    * contributing practical organisational skills
    * applying relevant and realistic logical arguments
    * calling a spade a spade
    * ensuring the team follows through to completion
  • The potential ways in which an ESTJ can irritate others include:

    * focusing too much on the current task at the expense of broader interpersonal issues
    * being too blunt in giving criticism
    * not seeing the wood for the trees
    * not encouraging others to experiment or innovate
    * not paying enough attention to others' feelings and values

Personal Growth

As with all types, the ESTJ can achieve personal growth by developing all functions that are not fully developed, through actions such as:
  • pausing and thinking, and recognising that others will accept the ESTJ's direction if their own contributions are accepted and valued
  • working within other people's limitations
  • taking time to consider the impact of the ESTJ's approach and ideas on people's feelings
  • expressing appreciation towards others
  • consulting others more, to engender ownership of the solution
  • learning to acknowledge and develop the ESTJ's own emotions and personal values
  • spending time alone to develop personal long-term strategies
  • spending time to develop personal relationships for their own sake

Recognizing Stress

  • As stress increases, 'learned behaviour' tends to give way to the natural style, so the ESTJ will behave more according to type when under greater stress. For example, in a crisis, the ESTJ might:

    * take command, decide what needs to be done, and tell everyone what to do
    * use tried and trusted solutions to short-term problems
    * make decisions too quickly, and without considering the impact on people
    * criticise others efforts and ignore their feelings
  • Under extreme stress, fatigue or illness, the ESTJ's shadow may appear - a negative form of INFP. Example characteristics are:

    * withdrawing and wanting to be alone
    * having intense emotions, that may or may not be expressed
    * being very sensitive to criticism
    * attributing unrealistic negative meaning to others actions or statements

The shadow is part of the unconscious that is often visible to others, onto whom the shadow is projected. The ESTJ may therefore readily see these faults in others without recognising it in him/her self.

Strengths

  • Generally enthusiastic, upbeat and friendly
  • Stable and dependable, they can be counted on to promote security for their families
  • Put forth a lot of effort to fulfill their duties and obligations
  • Responsible about taking care of day-to-day practical concerns around the house
  • Usually good (albeit conservative) with money
  • Not personally threatened by conflict or criticism
  • Interested in resolving conflict, rather than ignoring it
  • Take their commitments very seriously, and seek lifelong relationships
  • Able to move on after a relationship breaks up
  • Able to administer discipline when necessary
  • Don't need inspiration to proceed.
  • Work fast.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Good at taking a stand and presenting strong arguments.
  • Excel at writing instructions and technical procedures with a practical focus.
  • Like working with data and real-life experiences where they can express their opinions, such as an accident report.

Weaknesses

  • Tendency to believe that they are always right

  • Impatient with inefficiency and sloppiness
  • Not naturally in tune with what others are feeling
  • Not naturally good at expressing their feelings and emotions
