Why Are There Two Observations for Earthday?
The Equinox Earth Day
The Equinox Earth Day is observed on the March equinox, which falls around March 20th. The equinox marks a 'half-way' point in astrological time, a point in one day, where mid-spring falls in the northern hemisphere and mid-autumn falls in the southern hemisphere. Peace Activist John McConnell pioneered the idea for a global Earth Day celebration, in 1969. The following year, San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto declared The Earth Day proclamation, and many cities celebrated on March 21, 1970. In 1971, UN Secretary Thant supported McConnell's global vision and declared Earth Day to be an annual celebration.
The April 22nd Earth Day
The April 22nd Earth Day was spearheaded by U.S. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, in 1970. His vision was a grassroots movement that would spread the word of environmental issues. Nelson planned the coordination of Earth Day events, such as a 'environmental teach-in' across college campuses. News stories about such events helped spread environmental awareness.
April 22, 1970 marks a new turn in the celebration of Earth Day. Almost 20 million Americans participated in Earth Day events on the inaugural observation. Their purpose was to create awareness, address environmental concerns, and work toward sustainable living. Environmental groups banded together, as they realized they all had the similar goals.

Our Beautiful Earth
When we talk about the earth, is it a place you take for granted? Most likely, as we busy ourselves with daily activities of home, work, family, and friends. But we only have one earth, and we need to take care of it.
Earth doesn't exist for one person, one country, or one continent. It belongs to all of us. We're a global community, and we need to see Earth as our home, the only one we've got.
Have you seen Earth in all its beautiful glory? It provides so much for us. Take a moment and admire her beauty.
The History of Earth Day
A tremendous movement started in 1990, with Earth Day events spreading across the globe. From the 20 million Americans participating in 1970, the movement swelled to 200 million people in 141 countries. Earth Day events brought worldwide environmental concerns to a global audience. It also turned environmental issues into a more mainstream topic. Global recycling made its impact, as more people recognized the need for reusing products rather than the use-and-throw methods used before.
In 2000, Earth Day focused on global warming and the need for clean energy. Using its international grassroots background, the modern Earth day event used the internet to unite 5,000 environmental groups across 184 countries. Events across the world included a drum circle in African villages to crowds gathering at The National Mall, in Washington, D.C. The Earthday events took place simultaneously across the world, in combined awareness and observation of worldwide environmental causes.
Approximately 175 countries currently participate in Earth Day every year. Events range from tree planting, cleaning up trash from beaches, drum circles, concerts, and can be done as individual efforts or through larger group associations.
In 2009, a new event, called Earth Day Birthday, will unite local Earthday events through one site. Social Traffic, Inc. is promoting Earth Day Birthday, as a global party to celebrate Earth and all that she provides.
Ways to Help the Earth
What Can You Do?
- Pick up trash/litter around your apartment building - it doesn't take long, and it'll help the earth.
- Plant new trees or a garden - this helps beautify our world as well as adding oxygen to the atmosphere.
- Take kids to a lake and study the ecosystem. Find plant and animal life. Explain the importance of keeping the environmental clean.
- Email your friend - saves on paper for the stationary, envelope and stamp plus no truck emissions to deliver your letter. (Yes, it's still nice to send a real life card or letter, but on those other times, remind your friend that you're helping the world).
- Donate your old books to a library, nursing home, hospital, women's shelter, or a school - share your knowledge and save our landfills.
- Plan your errands on certain days of the week - instead of wasting fuel and causing more emissions, plan to run errands in your car on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of short trips throughout the week.
- Limit take-out food - You'll cut down on wasting paper - from the sandwich wrap to the straws. Eat at home, and most likely, you'll eat healthier and save the planet.
- Use rechargeable batteries - You know how mp3 players, digital cameras, and Wii gaming systems eat through batteries? Save our planet from throwing away countless batteries and buy rechargeable ones. A little costly at the initial purchase, but you'll more than make up both the money and cost to our Earth.

- Interesting and informative lens. In my article in Hubpages I have talked about the importance of 14 April. This could also have been another Earth Day.

Do You Want to Take Part in a Meaningful Project On Earth Day?
As a parent, I look at the world and wonder what will be left for my son. What problems are snowballing, and will his generation be able to enjoy this planet? Going outside and playing in the dirt holds graver consequences in his childhood than it did in mine. Going swimming in a neighborhood lake was an afternoon of laughter rather than a search for clean waters and worry about possible contamination.
His school took a recent field trip to the local waste facility. Do you realize that we will run out of land to throw our garbage? The local 'dumps' are usually tucked out of the way, the smelly place that we need to rid ourselves of junk, garbage, paper, food, and more. His generation will fight a hard war against saving our planet, but they also are more aware than my generation was. He remembers to turn off the lights, turn off a running faucet, and not to litter. He realizes that we cannot use and use and use without a consequence. Do you think your house is clean after you take out the trash? It might be, but what about your trash? Is it destroying our Earth?
For these reasons, I wanted to be involved in something greater than I was already doing. I wanted to stand up and participate in a movement that would positively impact our world. Social Traffic is that group. Members have teamed together and with their strengths in social marketing, we are taking our campaign to the world. Our campaign - Earth Day Birthday - will unite local events across the globe.
How can you get involved? There are plenty of ways to get involved with Social Traffic's Earth Day Birthday. We'd love to see you at the party!
