"Earth Day Poems" about, saving the earth, and spreading awareness.!
The world's resources have been plundered since the industrial revolution. We no longer have the same respect that ancient civilizations had for the elements, earth wind the sun and rain. We create our own warmth and electrical energy from plundering the Earths natural resources. The golden goose is getting sick as we cut out all the good bits, cutting off the flow of life giving energy, for our own greed. We mutilate rain forests and dam rivers to make lakes to build houses around, and then pollute them!
All this with little thought for the ecosystems that were supported by them before we arrived. World Heritage is only World Heritage until it is not! ... What do I mean? When something is inspected and deemed world Heritage it doesn't directly protect it... it just lists it. So if as in Far North Queensland (AUS) someone decides to cut a road through the middle of a rain forest with D9 bull dozers to join their man made lake and building blocks to the coast road, they get a fine which they have budgeted into the costs. The land is just removed from the world heritage list as it is no longer pristine.
I watched a Queensland Developer build a four lane access road to his property and then wait until the wet season when the rain pushed mud onto the highway so the council had to let him grade it and compact it .. this would have to be done each year unless of course they then let him tarmac it. An asphalt four lane access road joining the Atherton Tablelands to the costal Bruce Highway. Privately owned .. and a little less rain forest on the world Heritage list. It makes you wonder about the motivations of the decision makers in power.
Here are some poems which highlight my feelings towards the ongoing destruction which is unfortunately all too common in modern civilization.
POLICE STATE SECRETS
Police state secrets in my head
Queensland justice all but dead
Civil servants carrying guns
believe they are the chosen ones
To live at one with the land
Is something they feel should be banned
Cos tourists pay to come and see
out fertile lands and Coral seas
Those who lived here once before
are forced to sleep on concrete floors
Or under bridges, out stretched hands
wheres the justice in this land?
Children driven from the hills
to cities full of coloured pills
From the windswept winding tracks
To darkened rooms and lines of smack.
House the children
Save the trees
Don't spend it all on tourist needs
For hope is dying in this land
Of Coral seas and whitest sand.

BURNING A CANDLE FOR EARTH DAY
Candle`s burning on the table
as another year goes by,
but it's burning from both ends now
as the river beds run dry.
Mother Earth we hear you're calling
and we know what we must do,
We won't let them kill the forests.
We owe our existence just to you.
So come on now don't dam the rivers,
we don't need more concrete walls.
The plants and mammals are our brothers and our sisters,
We must help to save them all.
Mother Earth we hear you're calling,
we can hear your muffled cry.
We'll stand together to save your planet.
We won't sit back and watch you die.
So come on now lets stop the logging,
Our Creeks and rivers don't need walls.
The Barrier Reef was doing fine on its own,
Join together lets save them all.
Well the candles almost burned out
and the price we'll have to pay.
For the rape of ones own Mother
we will account on judgment Day.
So come on now lets save those pennies
Cos lots of pennies turn to Pounds
All together, we CAN make a difference
On "Earth Day Birthday"
The whole world round..!
