East Germany Today

East Germany after 1990 reunified with West Germany and became just plain old Germany. Reunification was a great thing and is celebrated every Oct 4th.

Nowadays some people forget that for over 40 years East Germany was it's own country and because of politics cut off from many parts of the world.

Think about it if a country about the size of Kentucky had to produce everything from it's own cars to paper clips.

The culture, attitudes, and people have a definite lens on life. It's my hope to promote interest of this part of the world in the US and give me an excuse to learn more about the place I live.

5 things you shouldn't miss!

1. Wittenberg location of the Martin Luther museum. He challenged the catholic church and won a new religion
2. Lepzig is the location of the grave of Bach for you musical buffs out there, also is ground zero for the fall of the GDR in 1989
3. The saxony swiss area is a great place for hiking and boating down the Elbe.
4. Dresden is my home town and was once called the Florance on the Elbe
5. GDR style food any one for quark and potatoes?

Travel books for the area

A couple of books about Dresden the firestorm bombing is interesting because even today it is still a issue in Germany. The far right (neo-nazi) have tried to take over the anniversary of the bombing to call attention to their causes. They call it the bomblocaust and inflate the number of death during the bombing. Every year on February 14 approximately 5-7 thousand Nazi's march in remembrance. It is scary to think that even today their are many followers of Hilter.

I love learning more about European cities and countries. I actually think that a doctor -- Andreas R. Gruentzig -- whom I did a lens on, was born in Dresden. You've done a great job with your lens -- let's see more. Welcome to Squidoo!
