Let's Start With Easter

An Easter bonnet is traditional wear for Easter Sunday. But what is Easter? And why a hat?

Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days following his crucifixion and death on the day traditionally referred to as Good Friday. Easter Sunday falls on a different date in March or April each year, a date calculated based on the cycle of the moon. While Good Friday is a sad day, resurrection day, or Easter Sunday, is a bright day of celebration for Christians every spring.

While many people dress up for church on Sundays, Easter Sunday has always been a special time for dressing up and the perfect time for a new outfit, especially for women and children. In the past the new Easter outfit included, and even today sometimes still includes, a pretty new hat.

In recent years most women no longer wear hats, but the tradition continues for young children, with little girls and sometimes even baby boys getting a new Easter bonnet every year.

Pagan or secular customs have become a huge part of the Easter season, many being celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike. Some modern Easter customs include coloring Easter eggs, Easter egg hunts, a visit from the Easter bunny, and even crafting Easter bonnets from paper plates or simple straw hats and paper or plastic flowers and ribbons, always a fun and creative springtime project.

In 1948, Fred Astaire and Judy Garland strolled the avenue, Fifth Avenue, in the annual New York City Easter parade, in the movie by the same name. You, too, can stroll Fifth Avenue in New York City in your Easter finest and your best Easter bonnet on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, this year. Along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets, feel free to "parade" in the informal gathering that takes place all day long. Don't forget your camera!

All it takes are a few basic ingredients and a little imagination.

Start with a simple straw hat - any style. Add Easter grass, peeps or eggs, scarves, flowers, or ribbon. Use a glue gun or good ol' Elmer's to attach. Be creative - and have fun!
