The Eastern Panhandle Region of West Virginia

The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is a beautiful part of country that is often over looked. It is a stretch of three counties - Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan - in the northeastern part of the state, bordering Maryland and Virginia.

This part of West Virginia is nestled in the country, but so close to the conveniences and interesting sites of the city. It is an easy drive of about an hour to the Baltimore/Washington Metro Area.

Historical Towns to Visit in the Eastern Panhandle of WV 

Harpers Ferry is a magical town full of history and exploration! While in Harpers Ferry, you can explore the natural history, John Brown's Raid, Civil War & African American History! There is so much to see and do as you visit the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. You will feel as if you have stepped back into history!

If you aren't a history buff, there is still plenty for you to do. Some come for hiking. The Appalachian Trail National Headquarters is located in Harpers Ferry. Others come for whitewater rafting, canoeing, tubing or biking along picturesque trails.

Nearby Charles Town is named for George Washington's youngest brother, Charles. His home, Happy Retreat is among several Washington family homes located here. Take a walking tour and visit the Jefferson County Museum to explore the town's history.

Charles Town is also well know for being the home of the a>. The Races and Slots is a popular entertainment venue. If you like thoroughbred horse racing and slot machines, this is the place for you!

If you have a "need for speed". A day at the Summit Point Raceway may interest you. There have been many well know celebrities cited here such as Tom Cruise and Paul Newman.

Shepherdstown is another historical town in our region. The town's streets are lined with fun, interesting shops and fantastic restaurants.

Shepherdstown is also the home of Shepherd University. It is a bustling college town full of history and intrigue.

Martinsburg is centrally located and provides easy access to Interstate 81 making it a hub for commerce and recreation.

Martinsburg is proud of its heritage. In October, the town celebrates its apple orchards with the Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival.

West of Martinsburg, Berkeley Springs is another small town full of history and sites. Last year AmericanStyle readers rated the town #12 among the nation's Top 25 Arts Cities.

Berkeley Springs State Park is not just the town square, it's a mineral spa that has operated since 1784 - and just one of several providers of spa services in town. Come see where George Washington bathed!
