What is Global Warming?

Global warming is a large issue with intense consequences at the personal and community level.

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that are trapped by our atmosphere.

What we need to recognize is that choices at the local and community level CAN make differences- and that these choices are economic choices, choices about forms of consumption (humans have always been consumers),they are political choices in terms of energy production, transportation choice.

Global warming is expected to increase ocean temperatures and to increase the flow of freshwater into the ocean through precipitation, run-off, and melting of glaciers.

Many climate models have projected that increased surface ocean temperatures and reduced salinity could be extremely bad news.

Global warming is projected to increase the population at risk by 3 percent (256 to 323 million additional people) in 2085. This is due to an increase in the range of mosquitoes, for example, to higher altitudes.

Scientists also warn that global warming threatens the lives of millions of humans and countless other animals. Many conscientious people are trying to help reduce global warming by driving more fuel-efficient cars and using energy-saving light bulbs.

We need to reduce Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions as quickly as possible.

Our Incredible Planet Earth

Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series

Amazon Price: $59.99 (as of 10/12/2008)

Planet Earth was filmed on Seven continents. It took Five years and included a $25 million budget. Planet Earth is such an epic, that it earns comparisons to some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters. I think High Definition Digest said it best "It's the Titanic of television nature documentaries - a work of great majesty, high ambition and huge financial risk (after all, this isn't a genre known for generating huge profits)." David Attenborough's narrates the series and does a great job at it. Planet Earth first started airing as an eleven episode series on the BBC in England late last year, and more recently on the Discovery Channel and Discovery HD here in the United States. With Planet Earth you will see beautiful landscapes of our planet, and amazing animal scenes all which will leave you either breathless, or at times put you on the edge of your seat. How some of these things were even able to be photographed by humans often makes you wonder. If you have a 1080p HD TV I highly encourage you to get the blu-ray or HD-DVD of Planet Earth. Only then will you will really appreciate the beauty of this amazing series.

How To Stop Global Warming

Yes! You Can Make A Difference.

If you believe in the "Law of Attraction" then you will understand that "Like attracts Like". Even though you might not think your Reduce Global Warming tactics will have any effect I can guarantee that they will. As people hear and see what you are doing they will become interested and what you are doing will make them think about their own contribution to Global Warming. They will then talk to others who will take action and you will never know just how much you helped.

Here are two easy things you can do to get started.

1: Turn your appliances off at the wall. These days we have a LOT of electronics on standby, from our Tv's, Dvd players, Alarm Clocks, Computers, Microwaves, Printers, Scanners, and the rest.
If you connect a few of them to a power board with an off and on switch it will be easy to turn them all off together at night and during the day when you don't use them. Buy a power board with an on/off switch at the end of it and keep the power board within easy reach, rather than having to clamber behind the Tv's to turn them off at the wall.

2: Instead of running the dishwasher every time you have a few dishes, make sure that it is full before you run it. Its incredible just how much you can get into a dishwasher if you think about it.
This is a great water saving and who knows how much water we have left on this planet before it runs out.

If you do these two simple things you will have started to show concern for our Planet.

4 More Easy Ways to Reduce Globle Warming

1: When buying goods chose the ones with less packaging

2: Take your own fabric bags to the shops with you. Avoid those plastic bags like the plague.

3: When choosing plants, choose fast growing ones like Bamboo and keep planting.

4: Keep air conditioning use to the minimum.

Planting Trees

Planting Nature: Trees and the Manipulation of Environmental Stewardship in America

Amazon Price: $35.95 (as of 10/12/2008)

In this thoughtful, well documneted book, Dr. Cohen points out that Americans have for a long time been aware of the damage we are doing to our environment. And for a long time tree planting has been viewed as a method of combating environmental degredation. But too often we treat tree planting as a panacea, though tree planting is not really the cure-all it is often made out to be. Dr. Cohen takes a critical view of such wholesome institutions as Arbor Day and the Global Releaf effort, but this is not out of a belief that planting trees is bad, but out of concern that by engaging in such activities people will not believe that there is more that needs to be done. This is a book that would read well with "Making Peace with the Planet" by Barry Commoner.

Facts About Global Warming.

1: Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

2:Research shows that moving vehicles have the highest impact on greenhouse emissions. The 450 million vehicles on the road today account for half of the world's total consumption, generate nearly one fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, and have pervasive effects on land use and air quality. Personal transportation (i.e., home use) is responsible for 30 to 50% of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, 33% of toxic water pollution, and over 45% of toxic air emissions.

3:About 75% of the annual increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is due to the burning of fossil fuels.

4: More than a million species face extinction from disappearing habitat, changing ecosystems, and acidifying oceans.

5:Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting-for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910. In the Northern Hemisphere, thaws also come a week earlier in spring and freezes begin a week later.
