The Right Attitude
It's very easy to get confused when going into your local diy store and seeing a huge range of tools, brushes sandpapers etc.The truth is that you dont need hardly any of them for normal decoration and maintenance work.
Things that you will need
- Dust Sheets:Unless you are painting an empty property you will need some form of protection for your carpets and furniture, old bedsheets can be used but if you are a complete novice I would recommend putting polythene sheets below them.
- Paint/paper scraper:This is a useful tool to you for removing paper/flaking paint, steering fresh emulsion, removing lids from paint etc. A fundamental tool. Buy a decent quality one and it will last you for years
- 10L plastic bucket with lid:Ideal for holding wallpaper stripping solutions and for mixing emulsions,
- 3 or 4 paintbrushes of reasonable quality:A 3inch,2 inch,1and a half inch and half inch(approx) cover most jobs.
- A 2L paint pot(approx):For your gloss painting
- Paint Roller:9 inches or so long.Sheepskin wool is the best and is the easiest one for the novice, long pile is also preferred to short pile as it holds the paints better
- Paints.
- White Spirit or Turpentine
- a few sheets of good quality medium grade sandpaper.
- Filler (if required)
- Masking tape (if required)

Tips to make the job easier
- Remove as many obstacles as possible from your working area, put remainder into center of room and cover well.
- Start on the ceiling and work your way down,do walls next and woodwork last.
- Instead of washing out your brushes and rollers every time you use them simply wrap them up in polythene bags and they will stay fresh for days or weeks (saves you paint too).
- Clean up as you go along, keep you work area as tidy and well ventilated as possible.
- If you hate the smell of paint you can add perfume or after shave to it which will neutralize the odors (don't overdo it though)
- If you struggle to cut in a straight line then use low tack masking tape of a good quality and mask up areas you wish to keep clean.
