Intermittent Fasting - What Is It & Is It Safe?
Intermittent Fasting is quickly becoming a very popular way to lose unwanted pounds and is increasingly being used by health experts both for themselves and their clients.
Here I want to look at Intermittent Fasting and dispel some of the myths and provide some validation for it as a weight loss system.
Here I want to look at Intermittent Fasting and dispel some of the myths and provide some validation for it as a weight loss system.
What Is Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent Fasting, what is it and why is it becoming so popular?
Let's just start by saying that Intermittent Fasting is not starvation of any kind, you are not expected to go without food for days or weeks at a time (that would be crazy!).
Intermittent Fasting is exactly what it says - fasting in short periods.

Why Is It So Popular?
Even Health Experts Are Using It To Help Them Lose Unwanted Fat
The reason why Intermittent Fasting is so popular especially amongst health experts and fitness professional is quite simply it is easy!
Let's go back to the weight loss equation once again:
"We must expend more calories than we consume in order to burn fat"
On the days that we fast we are not consuming any calories, however we are still performing our regular daily activities as well as carrying out a fitness program of some sort (even if it is only 30 minutes long) this means we are burning far more calories than we have consumed.
So where does the energy come from if we are not eating anything?
Good question and this is why Intermittent Fasting works so well.
Because we haven't consumed any calories our bodies are forced to burn the stored or excess fat in our bodies thus helping us to achieve the outcome we desire.
It also takes away the need for a restrictive eating regime where you are perhaps required to eat every 2 - 3 hours of the day, this is something that many people who lead busy lives find extremely difficult to maintain.

Is It Safe
What about all the stuff I've been told before?
Intermittent Fasting is completely different and for some is very difficult to accept because it goes against everything you have ever been told about nutrition and diet.
Let's look at some of the myths surrounding fasting:
You lose muscle if you do not eat every 2 - 3 hours?
This isn't true; You will not lose muscle if you miss a meal. In fact, you won't even lose muscle if you miss an entire day of meals. The biggest things that determines how much muscle you have is your genetics and your workouts. As long as you are following a well designed workout plan you will not lose any muscle while dieting.
Intermittent Fasting is for young people and is only another Fad Diet
Flexible Intermittent Fasting (the kind used in Eat Stop Eat) is supported by a large amount of research and is effective for many people of all different ages and walks of life. From professional fitness models to 53 year old Doctors, an amazing amount of people are switching to the Eat Stop Eat lifestyle every day.
Weight Loss Comes From What You Eat Not How Much You Eat
This is probably the most pervasive and perverse nutrition fallacy of them all. The bottom line is that to lose weight you MUST create a caloric deficit (Eat less calories than you burn off). As soon as you find a simple way to eat less calories you've won the battle, stressing over special ways to eat and special types of food to eat will NOT improve your weight loss beyond a simple calorie deficit.
Now let's have a quick look at some of the benefits:
No need to worry about food all day
Your metabolism will not slow down or go into starvation mode
You do not have to avoid eating out with friends
You will not be light headed and bad tempered.
You will save money
You will lose weight that is 100% body fat
You don't have to avoid carbs or fats
The conclusion; Is it safe?
Intermittent Fasting is the result of many years of study and testing to measure the effects on the human body and all results indicate that it is a safe and healthy way to lose weight for many people.
A side benefit of fasting is that it also provides time for your body to cleanse itself internally creating a fitter and stronger you from the inside as well as the outside.
