New Years Resolutions

Eat Better... Get Healthy... Lose Weight...

I make those resolutions every year, too. This year seems to be the year to make a serious effort. And Squidoo seems like a good place to compile and share my resources.

Last year I made a reasonable start. I cut out soda pop. My precious fizzy refresher! This year I'm going to try and add more vegetables to my diet.

Healthy Eats

It's not just about losing weight, we need to get healthy too.

Skinny and healthy aren't synonyms. It's not enough to lose weight if you still eat junk.

What is healthy and what is junk is really controversial, and really confusing!

Web MD Healthy Eating Overview
A healthy diet includes eating a variety of foods from the basic food groups: protein, such as meat, eggs, and legumes; dairy; fruits and vegetables; grains, such as breads and pasta; and fats and sweets. As simple as this sounds, it's not always easy to get the nutrition you need. You may eat more of your favorite foods from only one food group, and as a result, avoid others. Or perhaps you opt for convenience over quality when you are hungry.

Bad Food

As food goes some foods are much worse than others.

Some things are worth going the extra effort to avoid!
Trans fat
Bad bad stuff that sticks to inside of your arteries!

Unlike other fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Eating trans fats increases the risk of coronary heart disease. For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.

FOODS to check:

*Frozen dinners

What to look for:
*partially hydrogenated oil
High fructose corn syrup
Used increasingly as an additive to foods from soft drinks to cereal. HFCS is controversial because some research indicates it is addictive in nature.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) refers to a group of corn syrups which have undergone enzymatic processing in order to increase their fructose content and are then mixed with pure corn syrup (100% glucose) to reach their final form. The typical types of HFCS are: HFCS 90 (most commonly used in baked goods) which is approximately 90% fructose and 10% glucose; HFCS 55 (most commonly used in soft drinks) which is approximately 55% fructose and 45% glucose; and HFCS 42 (most commonly used in sports drinks) which is approximately 42% fructose and 58% glucose.

Keeping Track

Keeping track of your getting healthy efforts can be a challenge.

A hand written journal is the tried and true method. Always accessible and doesn't need a back up, it can be lost though, and you do get hand cramps.

Here are some online resources for keeping track of your getting healthy efforts.
