Eckhart Tolle and The Power of Now

Eckhart Tolle experienced a profound spiritual awakening at the age of 29 after a period of intense suffering. For the next two years he was homeless, sitting on park benches in awe of the beauty that surrounded him. Soon he found himself with an identity again, this time as a writer. The release of his first book, The Power of Now, was a huge success and have changed the lives of countless people around the globe.

The Power of Now?

The Power of Now is widely regarded as one of the most influential guides to spiritual enlightenment of our time. This is because Echart Tolle speaks form a place of knowing. As the title suggests the book explains how true power can only be found in the present moment. After all, isn't the now the only real time? The past is a memory and the future is a projection, they are not real.

When the past happened it happened in the now. When the future happens it happens in the now. They are just concepts of the mind. The now on the other hand is real. Everything that ever happened or ever will happen happens now, its impossible for anything to happen outside of the now. Knowing this it is surprising how much time we humans 'spend' in the past and the future.

We either have regrets about the past or we look to the future for fulfillment. This is a dysfunctional way to live simply because the past and the future are illusions. Of course there is nothing wrong with remembering nice things about the past or looking forward to good things in the future. But the present needs to be primary because the past is gone and the future is created in the present.

The reason we find it so hard to live in the present is because we are identified with our minds. Our minds are constantly chattering away and it leaves little room for stillness, the home of the soul. When we come into contact with our soul through accessing stillness on a regular basis we gain true power and knowledge. We gain an inner peace and nothing that happens on the outside can shake us.

This is the power of now, the joy and ecstasy of our own spirit.

The Power Of Now In My Own Life

For a very long time I have lived in fear in my own life. I was dogged by depression and panic attacks. I was always regretting how hard my life was in the past and there was a lot of unresolved pain. This pain was what caused depression and panic. It was like a caged animal that threatened to destroy me.

Similarly I was always living in fear of the future. I was always worried of what would become of me. I seemed to be completely out of my depth and felt i wasn't even close to where i should be in life. Pretty sad state isn't it?

Today I don't fear the future or regret the past. This is not something that came over night though. I had to gain trust in the present moment again. It took time for me to believe that the present moment was not my enemy. Mine is an extreme case though, but i tell you because it shows how much of a liability the mind can be.

The mind is like a runaway train which can entertain all kinds of unreralistic fantasies if not kept in check. This does not mean the mind is our enemy; when used in the right way it can be a very powerful tool. But what has even more power then our thoughts is the present moment. This is because when we are firmly established in the now we are one with the source.

Here there are no concern about the future or regret of the past. It's a state of pure bliss. People don't see what potential lies in the present moment because they miss it. Their minds are constantly chattering away about the concerns of daily life. There needs to be space for slilence and this can be achieved through the practice of meditation.

Not only does meditation have many documented health benefits but if practised properly it stops thought and allows us to be completely present and in the presence of the devine. When practised often your daily life becomes infused with this state and your life becomes transformed. You gain access to previously untapped power.

Does the past and future exist?

Yes

BuddyJ says:

It appears to the mind as if it does. One of the reasons for this is the brain (mind) is a step down transformer that forms and shapes its own reality. It has to slow things down. In our "finite" state we might not be able to handle "everything at once". You have to have reference points to kind of put all of it together so to us it seems like past and future. http://power-of-now-2.blogspot.com

Jewelsofawe says:

Yes and no. All time exists at once but in our lives, in this time continuum it does exist as part of the illusion and so it is real here. Does it exist in the spirit world? I don't believe so but is more like looking down on a ruler where you can see all numbers at the same time. I have felt time slow down and speed up as I think others have too like when you are in a car accident or fall, you can feel time slow down and I have even seen it when others are getting in a car accident. I have felt it speed by when I am totally present and elated in the moment. It is a cool thing.

No

chriskelley says:

No. But even if they do, we should act as though they do not.

The Power of Now

The present moment is where all power lies. When we have regrets about the past our energy leaks into the past. When we look for fullfiment in the future our energy leaks into the future. When our attention is supremely focused in the Now, we gain access to an immense reservoir of previously untapped energy.
