Green Crusaders making profit!

There was a time when environmental businesses were dominated by not for profit organisations and government agencies but that has started to change. Today more than at any other time in history Green businesses are reaping healthy profits. As consumers become more environmentally conscious demand for Green business is high and a new type of eco-warrior is emerging. One that is equally comfortable in a boardroom as they are in the natural world. Many are finding that business and environment can mix and there is a heady excitement as more businesses emerge with a healthy attitude to planet issues.

Green Business is the New Big Business

Eco-focused business is becoming profitable business and some of the biggest are operating in the renewable energy business. These companies largely ignore the "save the planet" and "feel good factors" associated with green projects and concentrate on presenting to businesses and people the actual capital return on investment that their products offer.

Leaders in these businesses must have the ability to lead, influence and be persistent. They need to be business savvy, identifying their key product selling points and ensuring that they meet the needs of the customers that they serve.

*Glenn Croston, author of "75 Green Businesses You Can Start to Make Money and Make a Difference" believes that it's a combination of business savvy and a commitment to the future that defines the successful green entrepreneur. "EcoPreneurs have got to believe in the importance of working for a greener future and a sustainable economy," he says. It's also important to "be a solid business person, someone who knows a good product and can deliver it."

Green business leaders need to also be convinced that there is no need for a choice between their business success and making a difference now and in the future.

10 Green Business Ideas

Ideas that are good for us all.
  1. Green Bag Hire - in a bid to slow their use stores are looking to start charging for plastic bags. Hire of strong hessian carrier bags from the store could be a money spinner as could sale of these bags.
  2. Be Green Recycle electronics - many companies pay good money for old electronics. Many people still bin these but councils are starting to clamp down on what is binned. So a business that offers to take it off their hands can potentially generate a profit by recycling the components.
  3. Childrens Green Clubs. Run a club teaching kids about good green practices and let them experiment with things like solar panels, solariums etc.
  4. Green / Organic product delivery service - Start an internet delivery service that delivers produce from your local organic market. My nearest organic market is about 6 miles away and only open when I am at work - I know that I'd pay to have produce delivered.
  5. Green Energy Reseller - There are now more and more ways to take advantage of the interest in renewable energy. Be creative you never know what ideas you may come up with. For instance many people in Germany took advantage of regulations which meant that energy could be bought from them.
  6. Green alternative energy installer - earn money by installing home renewable energy systems
  7. Green Venture Capitalist - This takes money to begin with but if you have it you can offer it to green start up businesses with or without your expertise
  8. Green cleaning - start a cleaning company that uses only non-toxic cleaning materials.
  9. Green Taxi or Bus company - many cities now charge a premium to drive into the city. Buy hybrids and start your own transport business.
  10. Sustainable Restaurant / Night club - A night club / restaurant that gets it's power from sustainable energy and offers healthy alternatives to alcohol and /or organic food
  11. Bonus: Did I say 10 tips? Well a good business always over delivers so here is an extra idea. Green car rentals buy some hybrids and allow people to drive into congestion zones where they are exempt or pay considerably less. Know that you are helping to improve the breathing health of the city.

Some inspiration

In the book Chicken Soup for the Soul at work. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen tell the story of John Imes of Quad/Graphics who's job it was to manage the companies waste. In the story John decides that since he and his colleagues lived in the town near the factory any pollution affected them all therefore he would do his job to the best of his ability. In a relatively short space of time that factory was not only recycling more but making money from their ecology efforts. To find out how get the book below.
