Eco-Friendly Halloween Costume Tips Save You Money

For Halloween This Year, I'm Going To Be Eco-Friendly and Inexpensive

BOO!!

Don't be frightened when your children ask you for costumes this year. Just sit back. Relax. Sip some of that home-brewed tea and eat some of those organic chocolates you bought for trick-or-treaters. Chocolates you shouldn't be eating, but you are because you have little will power. Then make a plan to search for some eco-friendly inexpensive Halloween costumes tomorrow.

Plan!? What plan?

Meuwhahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Eco-goolish Plan

Making a plan to find eco-friendly and inexpensive Halloween costumes is easier than you think. But to make the plan you need to know what you are looking for and how far you are willing to go to find a Halloween costume. Are you willing to go to the dark side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No! Okay good. Neither am I. I am however willing to share my 5 green costume hunting secrets with you. You can have a costume swap party, freecycle for costumes, shop at goodwill or at a resale shop for costumes or just make the costumes yourself.

What's The Costume Plan Again?

costume swap party, freecycle for costumes, shop at goodwill or at a resale shop for costumes or just make the costumes yourself

#1: Have a Halloween Costume Swap

If you are an outgoing mom and you know more moms, organizes a Halloween Costume Swap party. Every mom brings last years Halloween costumes (and costumes from the previous years) to the party. That mom than swaps with another mom for some new used costumes.

If two or more moms want the same costume have them flip a coin, bob for an apple, or put a name in a hat. The name drawn is the winner of that deeply desired costume.

#2: Freecycle for Costumes

If you haven't heard of Freecycle yet I'm surprised. This is a very popular site where locals give away their unwanted items to someone that wants them for free. Join the group in your area and after making an offer for your unwanted items post a wanted message for Halloween Costumes. It's that easy, but be cautious to keep to porch pickups only. You don't want to open the doors to strangers. Strangers! Strangers! Strangers! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

#3: Go to Goodwill For Charitable Costumes

Buy a costume at Goodwill. Goodwill profits help the unemployed find employment. Unfortunately, the costumes disappear quickly. No, the costumes are not ghost, but their are other costume planning parents just like you so shopping at Goodwill too. So, shop early, but not to early because Goodwill wont display the costumes until near October. Your best bet is to make friends with one of the employees there and ask him or her for a good time to come in. You can also call and ask.

#4: Resale Costume Shopping

If you are one of my fans you know I love resale shopping. Not including this option would be... dumb. So, take a chance at a resale shop and look for costumes there. Be careful though. Some resale shops take advantage of these types of celebration and spike up the prices. Know the worth of a Halloween costume. A resale costume should come at a resale price.

My 2009 Eco-Friendly Halloween Costume Find

Last week I took a look at the costumes at Goodwill. I found a spider costume for my ten month old. Only $4. He is going to look so cute. Today, Monday the 26th of October, I found 3 Halloween outfits for my two girls. The costumes were on clearance (just put on clearance this morning). A witch costume in great condition for $4. A girl pirate for $2 for my youngest girl also in great condition. A Belle costume for $2 with a small tear on one side.

I told my daughter we could turn her into Crazy Belle. We could make her hair wild, put on some crazy makeup. She could be crazy because she never really escaped the castle and she went crazy from being locked up all the time.

My 7 year old, not willing to alter the story or look anything, but princess-like didn't like my idea. So, I will have to sew the small tear near the waist. It isn't a big deal, but I'm lazy.

The witch costume is a size too big for this year. I will save it for next year. I bought it because I couldn't pass up the deal and plan to have one of the girl's wear it next year. People will spend $10, 20, 30 and sometimes even more on each Halloween costume. I spent $12 on all 4.

Don't Throw Them Away: Consign Your Old Costumes

When you go to the resale shops to buy a new used costume or two don't forget to take your old costume to consign too. If in good condition you may get back some of that money you spent on the costumes last year. Ask you resale shop if they consign.

#5: Make You Own Halloween Costume

If you have sewing skills or any creative skills of this nature make a Halloween costume. Turn a few boxes into robots. Make a prom dress a mermaid tail. Make old umbrellas into bat wings. The possibilities are endless. All it takes is some imagination. Take a look at the links below. They may just help you come up with an idea.

Lots of good ideas here for anyone who wants or needs to reign in the costs a little. Holiday times can be really expensive especially if you have a few kids or grandchildren.
