Hemorrhoid Home Treatment - Get Relief Today

Hemorrhoids are swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus.

Often hemorrhoids are itching, swollen, painful and/or bleeding. While they are seldom a serious health threat, and in most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days, they can make life miserable for those who suffer from them.

The anatomical term "hemorrhoids" -- spelled haemorrhoids in the UK and also known as emerods or piles -- technically refers to cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and the anus that have become swollen due to stretching under pressure.

However, the term is popularly used to refer to varicosities of the hemorrhoid tissue.

You can get hemorrhoids either inside your rectum, or outside, under the skin around your anus.

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of all people have hemorrhoids by age 50. In both sexes, a peak in prevalence was noted from age 45-65, with a subsequent decrease after age 65. In the US in a year, almost half a million people are treated for hemorrhoids, with 10 to 20% of them requiring surgery.

Hemorrhoid Home Treatment

Using the squatting position for bowel movements (see below).

For sufferers of hemorrhoids caused by poor vein circulation (coupled with varicose veins in lower extremities and/or varicocele), sleeping overnight with raised legs helps reduce or completely eliminate especially external hemorrhoids.

Using a hand held shower massage to direct a pulsating stream of cold water at external hemorrhoidal tissue for a few minutes each day tends to shrink the swelling, stop the itch and over time may reduce or eliminate the condition. Pressure used must be low at first but should be increased over time during future applications as tolerance builds.

If hemorrhoids pop out of your rectum put a heavy dose of neosporin ointment on them then pop them back in.

Placing an ice pack to an external hemorrhoid should relieve itching and swelling. Leave the ice pack on the hemorrhoid for 15 to 20 minutes.

Use a Squat Toilet

Based on their very low incidence in the developing world, where people squat for bodily functions, hemorrhoids have been attributed to the use of the "sitting" toilet. In 1987, an Israeli physician, Dr. Berko Sikirov, published a study testing this hypothesis by having hemorrhoid sufferers convert to squat toilets.

Eighteen of the 20 patients were completely relieved of their symptoms (pain and bleeding) with no recurrence, even 30 months after completion of the study. This study was undertaken in a very small number of people, when compared to the numbers involved in recognized high-quality trials. Therefore, the results, while highly suggestive, cannot be assumed to provide a firm conclusion.

No follow-up studies have ever been published. The American Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons is silent regarding the therapeutic value of squatting.
