Eiffel Tower

I had once gone to a meeting where they were having an impromptu discussion about the seven wonders of the world and why you should visit a particular one. I remember thinking that the Eiffel Tower should be included. Although built in recognition of the 1889 World's Fair in Paris France, it has become an icon throughout the world.

Eiffel Tower - The Beginning

Gustave Eiffel, an engineer, founded a company that specialized in metal structural work. Two chief engineers of that company, Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin, had an idea for a tall tower in 1884. Assembly began in 1887 and was completed 22 months later, culminating into the structure of the Eiffel Tower as we know it today.

Eiffel Tower - Painting

The Eiffel tower, being made of iron, needs to be painted to help the structure endure. Painting, on average, occurs approximately every seven years. It has changed color six times so far, and has been red-brown, yellow ochre, and the current color is bronze. It is scheduled for its next painting at the end of 2008.

Thank you Margo for your tip. Three visits in one sounds like a great deal!

I wasn't going to go, too touristy, but it was worth waiting in the lines.

A great time to do it is about an hour before sun down, you get to see Paris from the tower in the daylight, twilight and then the lights at night! Like three visits in one.

Hey, I guessed right on your paint quiz. That's a lot of paint! The Eiffel Tower is beautiful. I've been there once, but didn't go up. Welcome to All Things Travel.
