Eilean Donan Castle pictures

Eilean Donan Castle pictures - Eilean Donan is my favourite castle in Scotland . It is probably the most photographed castle in Scotland and a print of the castle makes a great present . It is set in a spectacular location on an island in the middle of 3 lochs . It looks great from at least 3 different angles. I have visited Eilean Donan Castle many times to take castle pictures

Scottish castles can be difficult to photograph due to the unpredictable weather , but summer is the best time to go , probably late afternoon so the sun is low and at the right angle . In winter the castle looks bleak and more atmospheric

In 1719 the castle was held by Spanish Jacobites supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie. Three English frigates sailed into Loch Duich and bombarded the castle with cannon fire until it was totally in ruins. The castle arsenal suffered a direct hit, causing a massive explosion . The castle them lay in ruins for nearly 200 years .
The castle is in the land of the clan Macrae and is often called the clan castle. It was only fitting that John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the castle in 1911 and started work restoring the castle over a period of twenty years at a total cost of a quarter of a million pounds. Local materials were used wherever possible, including slate for the roof.

More recently the castle featured in the film Highlander and a James Bond movie. You can see Bond driving over the bridge to the castle in darkness .
The most famous Scottish castles are Edinburgh Castle and Eilean Donan Castle.Edinburgh Castle is a famous tourist attraction right in the centre of Edinburgh and it gets thousands of visitors a year . Eilean Donan Castle is more difficult to find unless you know where it is, although bus tours visit there. If you set off from Edinburgh you would go over the Forth Road Bridge and head north towards Glencoe . The A82 takes you through Fort William . It is a beautiful drive , especially going through Loch Garry . It is on the west coast of scotland, 10 miles from the Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to Skye. Look carefully in some pictures and you can see Skye in the background , in pictures taken from the hillside overlooking the Castle. If you really fall in love with the castle, or fall in love at the castle , you can now get married inside it due to a recent change in marriage law in Scotland
