Elecrical Connectors & Their Functions

Electrical connectors have become an integral part of daily applications.

Electrical connectors are an integral part of most modern day devices.

Electrical connectors are a device which connects two or more electric conductors electrically and mechanically and to the terminals or apparatus and equipment.

Generally electrical connectors are used to form temporary connections, sometime it also use to form permanent ones.

Types of electrical connectors

Classification of Electrical Connector

There are hundreds of different types of electric connectors

1.Terminal blocks, component and device connectors

Wire nuts and Terminal blocks are simple type of electrical connectors.

Terminal blocks are also called as terminal boards or strips. A terminal block is one of the most flexible types of electrical connectors which use to connect 2 or more wires to a single connection point. Terminal blocks are easily available in wide range of wire sizes and terminal quantity.

There are two types of terminal blocks one block accepts wires which are prepared by stripping a tiny length of insulation from the end. Another block accepts wires that have ring / spade terminal lugs crimped onto the wires.

Drawbacks:
1. It is difficult to connect wires compare to plugging a cable.
2. Terminals are generally not very well protected from contact with human or other conducting materials.

2. Plug and socket connectors

Plug and socket connectors work as partner, it has a male plug and a female socket.

Male connectors plug into receptacles, jacks, and outlets.

Female connectors contain sockets to receive other devices.

Gender changers convert female connectors to male connectors, and vice versa.

Some examples are audio and video connectors, computer connectors and power connectors.

3.Crimp-on terminal connectors

Too easily connect and disconnect wire crimp on terminal connectors are widely used. It is commonly used as component and device connector. Crimp-on terminals are also entitled as Lugs.

They are attached to wires to be connected with screw terminals. Crimp-on terminals are used for connecting two wires together permanently or temporary depends on requirement.

Apart from individual screw terminals, fast-on or quick-disconnect terminals are also commonly used as component and device connectors.
