There are many different kinds of home based businesses out there and most have been around for a long time. A new one has popped up - selling electricity. For many people this sounds strange. How can you sell electricity?

In most states you dont have a choice when it comes to your energy provider but that is changing all over the country. Many states are deciding that the energy companies (both electric and natural gas) have become a monopoly. The companies are forced to break up into smaller ones and new companies are coming in.

So how can you make money? Some of these companies are allowing you to advertise and market for them. You sign up and become an independent energy consultant. Some of the companies only work in one state. Stream is a company that you can work for but you can only get customers in Texas (but remember, Texas is huge). However, Stream doesn't look like they have plans to expand outside of Texas. Ambit Energy is another company. Ambit started in Texas and has expanded to New York and Illinois with more states on the horizon.

You make the majority of your money by gathering customers (which isn't dificult with Ambit because of their lower prices and contract with Shell Oil). You get paid for these customers each month for as long as that person stays a customer. Both Ambit and Stream offer consultant bonuses as well. You get a bonus for each consultant you sign up.

Why sign up consultants? You get paid for their customers too and the more people you have under you the more customers you can reach and the more money you make.

You may be asking yourself "Is this a pyramid scheme?" The answer is no. A pyramid scheme is one where the majority of your money comes from signing people up under you. Even though you get a one time bonus for signing consultants up under you, almost all of your income comes from selling electricity to customers.

Most of your work is done over the internet. You can get a website from both companies that makes it easy for consumers to sign up. If you live in Texas, New York and parts of Illinois you can talk to your friends and family and tell them how much they'll save if they switch their natural gas or electricity companies. You do not have to live in one of these states to become a marketing consultant.

More companies like Ambit and Stream are likely to pop up. The income potential is huge right now. Everyone uses electricity and everyone wants a better deal.
