Mezzo-Soprano Wows in Bizet's Carmen

I first learned about Elina Garanca when I saw her in the Metropolitan Opera simulcast of Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella) during the 2009 season. I found her performance fresh and bright even though the Cinderella story seems terribly dated in these tough times. I guess the storyline equates to winning the lottery!

What fun to watch the gorgeous Garanca accompany her dustpan with such a beautiful voice! Check out the video clip below and enjoy the final aria of that performance.

Garanca earned an excellent review of Bizet's Carmen in The New York Times for her performance in Bizet's Carmen at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Tens of thousands watched her performance thanks to the Met's Live in HD series, which simulcasts productions to movie theaters in more than 40 countries and transmits encore screenings as well.

"Carmen is defined by her unwillingness to settle," Garnaca said. "She is constantly searching for something and never satisfied. It may be sex, or more broadly, approval by men. It could also just be zest for life. And in that she is uncompromising."

Of course, given that this Carmen happens in our opera world, the back story keeps on giving. Garanca performed because Angela Gheorghiu canceled. This production had been designed for Gheorghiu but apparently the diva decided to limit her stage time with Roberto Alagna, her estranged husband, who sings the role of Don Jose in Carmen.

Ms. Garanca is the real thing. Svelte, graceful and with a sense of humor, she flits around her decidedly portlier colleagues. Modern singing techniques adapt with difficulty to Rossini's early-19th-century emphasis on speed, lightness and athletic articulation, and Ms. Garanca was the only one onstage sounding completely comfortable. The lyric passages sang out; the episodes of racecourse delivery were fully in hand.

Bellini: I Capuleti e i Montecchi

Recorded 2008 & Released May 5, 2009

Yes, the two ladies, Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca, can together portray an operatic pair of lovers; and yes: it was audibly confirmed that the women have earned their privileged position in the CD market . . . Netrebko moves back and forth between dainty shyness and dark melancholy in coloratura passages she then displays the velvety splendour of her soprano . . . Garan a s approach is equally flexible as she moves between lyricism and drama with absolute mastery and great intensity . . . Standing ovation. --Der Standard (Vienna), April 2008

I Capuleti e i Montecchi is one of the loveliest and most moving of bel canto operas, though not among the more frequently performed. When Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca sang Giulietta and Romeo in Vienna last year at the performances documented in this recording, critics were enthusiastic.

Elina Garanca follows her exceptional debut splash, Aria Cantilena, with bel canto solos and ensembles featuring guest luminaries like Ildebrando d'Arcangelo. Flawless coloratura and a 'one-in-a-million' mezzo (The Independent) make this exciting young artist ideal for this repertoire. Balancing familiar numbers and ensembles with little known treasures by Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, Elina rides bel canto's vocal acrobatics and spun out melodies through an emotional spectrum to unforgettable effect Universal

The Festival Theatre at the German spa town of Baden-Baden is a spanking modern concert hall behind the façade of a handsome 19th-century railroad station. In July 2007, it hosted an evening of wonderful singing by a quartet of leading operatic stars in a program that could have been titled "Opera's Greatest Hits." After a brief orchestral piece from Bellini's Norma the fireworks begin with the duet Mira, o Norma featuring soprano Anna Netrebko and mezzo Elina Garanca, their voices blending beautifully.
