Purchase music from the early years
Elvis is the only performer to have been inducted into four music 'Halls of Fame: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986), the Rockabilly Hall of Fame (1997), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1998), and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001).
> Fame (2001).
Memories: The '68 Comeback Special
This was a great TV special. I believe it was tape more...2 points
The Dawn
1956
Elvis was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His family later moved to Memphis.
Before his first hit, he played the small towns around Tupelo and Memphis. I was a bit young to be following rock & roll bands, but I sometimes heard that Elvis was in town. There were always rumors of fights...lots of jealous boyfriends.
Once Evis appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, that all changed, as did (it seems) everything else in the world.
"Before Elvis, there was nothing.
~~John Lennon"
(Elvis Birthday is January 8, 2009)
It's Still Early
The 60's and Rock & Roll
It's a beautiful day!
68 Comeback Special
I think this was the first time anybody had ever played on TV in a black leather outfit.
Check at the end of this lens to see the unedited 68 Comeback Special.
High Noon
Live From Hawaii
The first ever Satelitte broadcast heard 'round the world!
1.5 billion viewers tuned into Elvis' 'Aloha From Hawaii' concert.
Elvis' Suspicious Minds (live Hawaii)
As he slowly, skillfully eases down into a "snake creeps down" position showing his amazing physical agility and martial arts black-belt training, never missing a beat--
Elvis changed the lyrics to
"hope this suit don't tear up baby!"
Elvis--Martial Artist
You can see it in his films, you can see when he performs onstage. He's always promoting his martial arts training.
"It's not just self defense, it's about...self control, body discipline, and mind discipline...and breath techniques. It involves yoga. It involves meditation. It's an art, not a sport." ~~Elvis Presley.
"August 1974 - Elvis gave an explanation of karate in a Vegas show...
"There are a lot of people who know that I have been involved in the art of Karate for some time.
Kung Fu and Karate are the same thing. There's no difference, it's just ah, the Chinese terminology is Kung Fu and Japanese is Ka-ra-te. Kara means open, Te means hand,...Ka-ra-ate.
See, I've been doing this for 16 years. I started when I was in the army, in 1959. I've been doing it every day of my life ever since...for at least two or six hours a day."
His Passion for Martial Arts
"He who hesitates meditates horizontally" ~Elvis
- Elvis The Martial Artist
- Elvis was perhaps one of biggest promoters of the martial arts during their big rise in the United States. Through his fight scenes in his movies, or his on-stage kata-inspired dance routines, Elvis introduced millions to the martial arts.
Tiger Man
"Even more than his "waist up" appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the "sit down" segment of Elvis's 1968 comeback special was by far his most powerful appearance on television. Proof that Elvis could still rock, it was also only his third live performance since 1957. This seminal rock & roll moment, with Elvis surrounded by Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana, was actually two separate sessions taped two hours apart. The first session, along with rehearsals, appears on Memories: The `68 Comeback Special. However, it's always been the second session, the 8 p.m. show, unreleased in its entirety until the appearance now of Tiger Man, that's lived in popular legend as one of the great undiscovered treasures of his oeuvre. An again confident Elvis really cuts loose here, launching into scorching versions of early classics. "That's All Right," "Heartbreak Hotel" (where he has to stop to catch his breath and remember the lyrics), and "Blue Suede Shoes" have all the fire that first made him such an arresting phenomenon." --Robert Baird

Late Afternoon
Long shadows across the lawn
Priscilla has gone, and the light is going out. He can't remember his words and he seems not to care. But the voice never goes.........

It doesn't get any better than this!
One hundred forty-eight different Elvis recordings have been certified gold, platinum or multiplatinum. And with more than 1 billion albums sold worldwide, he's the biggest-selling solo artist ever.

Elvis is the No.1 most impersonated celebrity ever. There are estimated to be over 50,000 people in the world who make a living as Elvis impersonators.
In both a recent CBS television '48 Hours' poll and a CNN/USA Today Gallup Poll, roughly 45 percent of Americans consider themselves Elvis fans.

I was in my home town 60 miles south of Memphis Tenn. I heard it on the radio, while driving my car. I was 18 years old. I went home and told my brother and my Dad. My Dad and Elvis grew up together in Tupleo Miss. They were distant cousins. My Dad was 7 years older than Elvis and they looked alike. Posted August 17, 2007 |
