Embroidery Designs - Finding a Pattern for the Purpose

Embroidery designs on clothing and household items goes back as far as the early Chinese Dynasties, ancient Egypt and Northern Europe. The designs reflect cultural expressions, status and the fashions of the time.

Embroidery joined with technology is attracting a new group of crafters. With computer generated patterns and size adjustments, digital embroidery works on any project with ease. Digital embroidery is a cut above the first generation of machine embroidery.

Embroidery Machine Essentials:
How to Stabilize, Hoop and Stitch Decorative Designs

The wide varieties of embroidery thread make it possible to create texture that gives a pattern multi-dimensional flair. Embroidery patterns have gone a long way beyond the traditional tissue paper transfer.

Using a digital camera or a scanner and a computer, you can create embroidery patterns from any image - even a photo of your child. The ability to manipulate the image sizes, flip the image or experiment with color blends in computerized view before starting the work gives you total flexibility in making your own patterns.

You can also find an endless supply of embroidery patterns online from free or paid sources, whether you like something whimsical such as cows, roosters or the Grinch embroidery designs or traditional crewel or Celtic embroidery.

In choosing an embroidery pattern, consider the way the item will be used. On clothing, position the embroidery design so that is works well with the way the garment hangs and is flattering to the figure. On household items, you must also consider the placement. Filling a placemat with delicate cutwork embroidery is not the best idea when most of it will be covered by the dinner plate.

An Embroidery Must Have:

Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches

Amazon Price: $13.57 (as of 07/20/2008)
List Price: $19.95

"This book is hard to find and I am surprised that Amazon has it readily available. It really is a rare jewel of a dictionary and though it has no projects the directions are simple and easy to follow and very inviting. Other contenders in this space are A-Z Embroidery and Lucinda Ganderton's offering. This book is better than Lucinda's in showing the finished product; all are standouts."

Embroidery machines that were once only affordable for professional sewers are now available in several price points - with something suitable for any home sewer. For maximum flexibility in linking with your laptop computer, look for an embroidery machine with at least one USB port.

Singer's Futura sewing and embroidery machine is the nearest rival for the Brother embroidery dynasty. Pfaff, the German classic sewing machine, has the Creative Vision line of computerized embroidery machines at a higher price point.

Husquvarna Viking is the Scandinavian die-hard that offers a wide range of embroidery machines for the occasional sewer up to the professional sewer. Will an Embroidery Software Provide More Options?

Embroidery machines with USB ports and software capability make the old 30 stitch sewing machines seem like Stone Age gear. Even a lower priced machine that takes embroidery software cards gives you amazing flexibility in creating and editing designs.

The time saved in using machine embroidery over traditional handwork is enormous. Plus, you can get exact replicas of a logo or other design to use for several projects. You can even recreate an heirloom embroidery piece by capturing it in digital photo and using that as the foundation to develop a machine embroidery pattern.

Brother Personal Embroidery Design Basic Software

Some embroidery machines can only receive designs that have been digitized and saved on custom software cards. With these, you're limited to design sets that are purchased from the dealer.

If you want to create your own designs from drawings or photos, then you want a machine that accepts computer input. Most of the embroidery software systems give you the freedom to combine designs, rotate or crop the image, move elements and adjust the size.

The most sophisticated software systems also let you alter individual stitch segments within the total design. This is complex editing and requires more experienced design skills as well as software capability.

Embroidery software is usually brand specific, so your Viking designs are not likely to be received by a new Brother machine. As the machines become more advanced, you may not be able to use older patterns with newer machine.

You'll get the most for your money and preserve your design library by choosing machines with USB ports and direct input rather than relying on pre-loaded embroidery software cards.
