Congrats on an interesting and entertaining LOTD. I read through all the way and gained even more respect for folks who work in your profession. Anyone who's called 911 knows how valuable you are in an emergency situation.

What a super lens. I really liked learning a little more about Bethel and Alaska through the eyes of a police dispatcher. What an interesting way to educate us. Thanks and Congrats.

Great article. Being a retired surgical nurse I have seen some of the "behind the scenes" with our safety departments. It was nice to look further into the background of what happens. You did an excellent job. Congratulations on your LOTD.

Awesome lens! Great stories, great pictures and activities... I used to be a newspaper photographer in a small community--and our newspaper policy was to share our photos with the police department in exchange for information for the news stories. So I would take pictures at police and fire activities... sometimes acting like a CSI photographer. And I had a police-band scanner in the house, in my car, and on my belt. Always "on-call"... Your stories are similar to many I've heard, too! And when I lived in Montana, we also had moose, elk, and even bear looking through our windows and wandering through the streets. Dispatchers' delight! I've liked, favorited, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your amazing lens! Congrats on a great job!

My hubby is from out west, and has been w/ me here in NJ for over 30 years, says it's like being "down in a hole", we're surrounded by trees. Anyway, congrats on the LOTD today.

    http://www.squidoo.com/vince-case-obituary
especially the part about the magic ambulance I made up from all his stories. I think we still have some relatives in Alaska - a police officer that now goes by the name Eskimilo Thunderbunny - I think he put quite a few bad boys in jail and wants to be left alone. Thanks again for the great stories.

It takes a special person to do the job you do, so thank you for being that special person on the other end of the phone during the big and small emergencies. We don't live in Alaska, but we have had a couple of emergencies in our family and relied on someone like you to get us through it, so we really appreciate the job that all of you do! Enjoyed reading your lens. Emergency response is an immensely important mission where seconds can sometimes mean life or death so it's hard to imagine having to cover that large an area with one team, but you did a great job of bringing the lighter moments home. 5*s and faved and a vote in the FSC

Thanks, Tinw. The widget shows Bethel for me - do you have links with weather channel- a desktop feed or anything? That might be overriding the widget. Otherwise...???
  • Tinw Feb 21, 2009 @ 12:35 am | delete
BB-- I keep coming back. You really need to write a book of your adventures someday, you know? And you're mastering the art of Squid rather quickly, I see!

One thing. I do not understand how to fix it, but that weather widget is giving me the forecast for balmy southern CA.

This is great! Being in Search & Rescue, I spend a lot of time listening to the dispatcher's work, and I'm always so impressed. I'm lensrolling this to my Becoming a Search and Rescue Volunteer lens. I haven't found too many lenses on the subject of rescue, and this one is really good to boot.
  • a_willow Feb 15, 2009 @ 4:07 pm | delete

  • BlackroseBugg Feb 13, 2009 @ 11:48 am | in reply to Beautiful_GreenBeans | delete
Thank you all for stopping by! I really appreciate it - and Green Beans- I am very glad your son is all right, and that a colleague was able to help you through a very scary experience. I don't think there is a single dispatcher that would not say that calls involving children are the toughest, bar none.
  • Beautiful_GreenBeans Feb 13, 2009 @ 8:43 am | delete
Oh, that was a great! Nothing like a good belly laugh to start your day.

In all seriousness, I recently had to call 911 when my 3yo slipped and cracked his head on the ceramic tile rendering him unconscious and without breath. Just as I started CPR he gasped for breath but was still out cold. If it wasn't for the 911 operator on the other line, I can't be sure I would have held it together until the ambulance came. You do more than just answer the call, you are best friend and therapist through some of our worst life experiences. Thank you for what you do everyday!
  • Joan4 Feb 13, 2009 @ 4:42 am | delete
Entertaining and fun to read! As well as informative! I giggled at your stories. But the cuts to service are frightening.

The AK-AR story is a riot an so typical. Many NYer's dont know that Buffalo is part of their own state either, let alone country, or that the only actual NY football team left is the Bills.
  • Feb 5, 2009 @ 10:59 pm | delete
I know someone who is a dispatcher, living in Montana. This lens gives me some more respect for what she does every day (not to mention a couple good laughs) :) Great lens!
  • SixB Feb 5, 2009 @ 5:37 pm | delete
I got many laughs reading this! Great page BB. It never occurred to me that 911 was in essence human tech support. The dispatcher calls you shared took me back to my days in the trenches of computer tech support, and yes, when the techie puts you on hold, your ears should be ringing!
  • bcziebarth Feb 5, 2009 @ 10:51 am | delete
