Emotional Components of Alcoholism

Do You Drink Too Much? If You Do, Learn About the Dangers of Psychological Addiction
Many people focus almost exclusively on the physical aspects of alcoholism such as withdrawal symptoms, "the shakes," or blackouts when trying to quit drinking.
There is another aspect of alcohol dependency, however, that is perhaps as difficult to cope with as the physical symptoms, namely the emotional components of alcoholism.
And keep in mind that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means "alcohol dependency," "alcohol addiction," or "alcohol dependence."
The Dangers of Psychological Addiction
Psychological addiction occurs when the cravings for a drug such as alcohol are psychological or emotional. Individuals who are psychologically addicted feel overcome by the desire to have the drug they are dependent upon.
These feelings are so strong that in many instances psychologically addicted individuals will do almost anything for their next "high" including stealing, lying, and in some instances, killing.
Alcohol Abuse Can Lead To Alcohol Addiction
Many times people abuse drugs or alcohol in order to have "fun" or to get a "buzz." Many people, in fact, report that having a few drinks makes them feel more comfortable in social situations. The danger with this pattern of drinking, however is this: repeated alcohol abuse can result in alcohol addiction.
Drinking In Order to Function
When person is addicted, he or she no longer takes drugs or alcohol to have fun or to get high. Rather, the addicted person needs the drugs or alcohol in order to function on a daily basis. In fact, the addicted person's everyday life frequently centers around satisfying the need for the substance they are hooked on.
Psychological Signals Indicating Alcohol Addiction
Psychological signs that you or someone you know may have a drug or alcohol addiction include the following:
- blaming other for one's problems
- anger, anxiety, or depression
- a preoccupation with figuring out how to get alcohol or drugs
- unexplained mood swings
- solitary drinking
- withdrawal or keeping secrets from friends, co-workers, and family
- use of drugs or alcohol as a way to forget problems or to "mellow out"
- anti-social behavior
- failed attempts to stop drinking or taking drugs
- loss of interest in activities that used to be fun or important
- changes in friendships, such as associating only with "friends" who drink
Emotional Components of Alcoholism: Conclusion
Regrettably, the "buzz" and the "high" that were so pleasant during the early days of drinking in many instances change into a need to drink in order to make it through the day. When an individual experiences this kind of "loss of control," he or she may not only suffer from physical symptoms of alcohol dependence such as "the shakes" and blackouts but also emotional components of alcoholism.
More specifically, many individuals who are alcohol dependent experience a psychological craving for alcohol that manifests itself as an overwhelming desire to drink. These cravings can be so intense that in many instances psychologically addicted individuals will do almost anything for their next "fix," including most types of crime.
One final point. It is important to underscore the fact that when the term "alcoholism" is used, this also means "alcohol dependence," "alcohol dependency," or "alcohol addiction."

Alcoholism and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts
Did you know...
- A number of today's teenagers who engage in alcohol abuse probably wonder what is so "wrong" about having a drink or two and driving. What these young people do not realize is that far before an individual is legally intoxicated, one or two drinks affects a person's ability to think clearly, lowers his or her reaction time, adversely affects his or her judgment, and also negatively affects his or her coordination. In short, just one or two drinks can make the difference in avoiding an accident or involvement in an alcohol-related traffic accident or fatality.
- According to alcoholism research, there are higher rates of alcoholism in the unemployed, laborers, those of lower socioeconomic status, those that drop out of high school, those who entered college but failed to earn a degree, and those under more stress.
- Research has demonstrated that American teenagers who drink alcohol are 50 times more likely to engage in cocaine use than teens who never drink alcohol. More than anything else, this statistic probably means the following: almost every person who uses cocaine at one time or another got their start in substance abuse by drinking. In short, it would be very rare indeed to find people who are 'receptive' to using cocaine who are not also 'receptive' to drinking alcohol.
- It is important for drinkers to understand that when they frequently and regularly engage in abusive drinking such as binge drinking, they increase the risk of becoming alcohol dependent. This fact is especially difficult for young people, many of whom feel that they are 'bullet-proof' and in total control of their drinking.
- If you suspect that a person has alcohol poisoning or is overdosing on alcohol, get immediate medical assistance (by calling 911), even if the person is underage.
- There are hundreds if not thousands of clinics, hospitals, and other facilities in the United States provide alcohol detox, rehabilitation, and alcohol treatment services. These treatment options range from short-term in-patient, residential hospitalization to long-term, outpatient education, therapy, and counseling.
- According to one U.S. alcoholism study, of the 940,000 people who said they needed alcohol or drug abuse treatment in a specialty facility, only 314,000 made an effort to get treatment, while 625,000 made no effort.
- Fortunately, research is helping to define the barriers that exist in accessing care and achieving recovery from alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
- The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug or an alcohol abuse problem.
- Positive alcohol expectancies, or the belief that drinking will lead to positive, pleasurable experiences, play a key role in the drinking behavior of young adults.
- According to the substance abuse literature, prevention messages can make a positive difference. In a word, these messages can convey information to change people's attitudes about drug use and alcohol drinking behavior in a positive manner.
- Alcoholism statistics demonstrate that you might think you can quit drinking at any time. Many people who have alcohol problems do quit for periods of days, weeks, or even months before they start drinking again. But unless you can consistently keep your drinking under control and not fall back into unhealthy patterns, you need professional help.
- Workplace alcohol testing will increase in the coming years due to alcohol-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities, and to alcohol-related under production.
- According to the research literature, in the U.S., alcohol is linked with an estimated 5,000 deaths in people under age 21 each year. This is more deaths than from all the illegal drugs combined.
- U.S. research shows that many people do not go to a doctor specifically for alcohol problems but seek treatment for physical conditions (such as cirrhosis) that result from long-term alcohol use. Your doctor might ask you questions about your drinking to help see whether alcohol abuse is the cause of a condition like cirrhosis.
- According to the alcohol addiction research literature, many, if not most, of the people who become alcohol dependent were abusive drinkers earlier in their lives. This finding shows the fragile and thin line that separates alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
- Children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more likely to suffer employment problems, abuse other drugs, and commit criminal and violent acts once they reach young adulthood, according to a RAND Health study.
- The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug abuse problem.
- Since nothing can change what took place in the past, it is hoped that all of the state and federal prisoners who abused drugs and/or alcohol in the past have access to alcoholism and alcohol abuse programs as well as to substance abuse and addiction treatment while they are still in prison.
- The U.S. alcoholism statistics remain overwhelming. There are roughly 14 million individuals in the U.S. who are addicted to alcohol and millions more who display symptoms of abuse, including binge drinking. Unfortunately, a reported 2.6 million binge drinkers in 2002 were between the ages of 12 and 17 years old.
- The findings of the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction demonstrated that, while millions of Americans habitually drink alcohol, swallow prescription drugs, smoke pot, and snort cocaine, a number of drug users who meet or exceed the standards that indicate that they need professional treatment do not realize or accept the fact that they have a drug abuse problem."=
- Apparently, drinking on college campuses is more widespread and damaging than many individuals realize. For example, in a study that was sponsored by undertaken by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drinking alcohol is correlated to at least 1,400 college student deaths and 500,000 accidents and injuries on an annual basis.
- According to the alcoholism and substance abuse research literature, when drug addiction and alcoholism are treated as long term, chronic and relapsing illnesses, success rates in the U.S. are comparable to those realized with other chronic health problems.
- Research shows that when appropriate treatment is given, and when alcohol addicts follow their prescribed program, alcohol addiction treatment can work.
- Drug and alcohol abuse statistics reveal that more than 67% of the funding for drug and alcohol treatment programs comes from public sources. Private insurance pays for about 14% of these services and the patients pay for about 10%.
- According to the alcoholism research literature, alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a group of symptoms exhibited by people who suddenly stop drinking alcohol after a pattern of repeated and excessive ingestion. These symptoms can range from mild to moderate to severe and include both physical and emotional components.
- In a relatively recent alcohol abuse research study that was sponsored by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was discovered that binge drinkers are substantially more likely to be involved in motor vehicle accidents than non-binge drinkers.
- Alcohol use among adolescents has also been associated with considering, planning, attempting, and completing suicide. Research does not indicate whether drinking causes suicidal behavior, only that the two behaviors are correlated.
- Alcohol-related consequences run the gamut. Yet many health care providers see only the most severe cases, such as those with a history of alcohol dependence or patients suffering from advanced alcohol-related liver disease.
- Data from several national alcohol abuse surveys indicate that about four in five college students drink and that about half of college student drinkers engage in heavy episodic alcohol consumption.
- According to a 2007 Science Daily report, students who had multiple reasons to drink, including reasons related to coping, were also more likely to begin drinking at an earlier age, more likely to be drunk in the past year and more likely to drink before 4:00 pm, compared to students who drank to experiment with alcohol, to experience the thrill of drinking or just to relax.

- I can not say that I have done very many things in my life that I am proud of but defeating alcoholism is one. We have a vast population and unfortunately very few survive. It is with the help of my fellows and by the grace of God that I sit behind this computer screen today. I am doing my part in this vicious circle known as the alcoholic life to prevent the tragic events of my life from ever falling upon the shoulders of another. This is a disease that kills everyday, one way or another alcohol is related to many of the world's tragedies. I feel as if I could not leave this life without first sharing my knowledge of living with another suffering sole so they may too find what it means to really live.
