It Really Can Be Done

It really is possible to lose weight and keep it off. But diets generally aren't the way to do it.

Why Your Diets Have Failed You

Are you sick and tired of working and sweating to lose weight, only to discover a few months later that every pound you've lost has come back -- and then some?

Well, so am I.

But according to Dr. Scott Olson of GetOffTheYoYo.com, it doesn't have to be this way.

According to Dr. Scott, the reason your previous diets failed is almost certainly not you. You see, nearly all the popular plans, books and services out there fail in one main regard: They don't work with your natural body chemistry, or take into account the way you use and store energy.

When we eat, our body converts the food into fuel it can use. Right now, we're going to focus on one of those fuels - the glucose that comes from the carbs we eat. No matter where those carbs come from - be it whole wheat bread or a cupcake - they're converted into glucose.

If we have too much glucose running around our bodies (also known as "high blood sugar"), it's like having excess fuel. Our body, being a very efficient engine, doesn't want to waste that fuel. So guess what? That sugar gets stored as fat.

Which means the number one thing you can do in order to make this the last time you ever need to lose weight is to regulate your blood sugar.

So the first thing we can do is to stop worrying about fat grams or calories. You don't need specially packaged meals, or to count points. Instead, focus on foods that won't raise your blood sugar by eating lean meats, and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies.

When you do eat carbs of any kind, try to lessen the impact they'll have on your blood sugar by balancing them with some lean protein and some healthy fat. So instead of just eating an apple, add some lowfat cheese slices and some nuts.

The Glycemic Index To The Rescue

You may or may not have heard of a very handy tool called the Glycemic Index. The GI is a method of measuring how much glucose certain foods produce in your blood stream.

Foods that spike your blood sugar, like white rice, potatoes and even table sugar itself, have a high Glycemic Index number.

Foods that raise your blood sugar moderately have a medium GI. And those that cause little or no elevation in your blood sugar levels are said to be low GI.

The whole thing can be pretty complex, but basically it goes something like this:

Foods with a High GI include: Refined grains, potatoes, sweets, breads and pastas

Foods with a Medium GI include: Whole grains (like brown rice and barley), some beans

Foods with a Low GI include: Most fruits and vegetables (except potatoes) proteins (like fish, chicken, turkey, beef) and nuts

You want to concentrate on foods that have a Medium-Low to Low GI. Beans, fruits, veggies, and meats. You want natural foods instead of highly processed ones, as the more something is processed, the higher the GI.

And you want to be very sparing with anything on the higher ends of the GI chart.

This is why there's no need to count points, calories, or grams of anything ever again. Just by sticking to the foods that will not spike your blood sugar, and eating until you're full, you'll lose weight.

Weight Loss Tip: Grains and Sugar

It may go against everything you know about weight loss, but eating more often will actually help you lose weight even faster.

Favs, lensroll, 5* and thumbs up for excellent information on an important topic. I used to be hypoglycemic, and it wasn't too nice when when that flood of dizziness and nausea swept suddenly over me as I blacked out and sank to the floor. Thanks to a low glycemic diet, my blood sugar has been in the ideal range for some years now, I have more energy, and no one has to do as my husband did when we were waiting for a table - tackle a waiter, grabbing someone else's basket of bread, knowing that he had about one minute to get it to me to avoid my fainting!

Nice job explaining the glycemic index. I believe weight control is all about eating smart and exercise, not dieting.
