Epiphone Les Paul Standard Honeyburst: Plus vs Plain

Epiphone Les Paul guitars are the only Asian made guitars that were endorsed by Mr. Les Paul.

This should be no surprise, the first prototype of what eventually became the Gibson Les Paul came from his experimentation with an Epiphone Guitar at an Epiphone factory many decades ago.

Their current line of Les Paul Standard models, the Plus in particular, have some of the best looking finishes around this price. The Honeyburst has a nice transparent back letting the grain of the wood be exposed, making it more attractive than other finishes.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Honey Burst is the nicest looking of the two options in which this guitar is available. I see a few different models every week due to my work and they're always consistent. It's very classy looking, it has a good amount of detail on the flamed top, and if anything it can look a little too shiny.

The pickups are designed by Gibson and modeled after their 490R and 498T humbuckers, these are designed to have a more pronounced upper midrange for a more modern sound. Through high gain amps like some by Marshall and Laney this guitar displays a deep character, though not as thick as a Gibson Les Paul, but still full when distorted.

The fretwork is very clean and stays in tune fairly well with original Grover tuners. The neck humbucker is 'woman tone' ready with the normal hint of mud that comes with all Les Paul guitars. The bridge pickup is not overly aggressive and rocks more in a Slash way than a Godsmack way I would say. The neck is a replica of the Gibson 60's slim tapered neck which is easier to play than the 50's version.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Honey Burst is basically the same guitar as the Standard Plus, only that the flamed top is substituted for a plain one. This is just cosmetic and doesn't affect the sound or performance of the instrument. Another difference is that the Plain Top is not offered in a lefty model or the colors amber and blue.

Other than this all the specs are exactly the same as the Standard Plus. Even though I don't recommend to start thinking about upgrades before getting a guitar, but with the difference in price I would recommend a pair of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro humbuckers, a very decent Slash clone guitar.

Schecter C-1 Plus Review

Sound: 3.5/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 3.5/5
Overall Value: 4/5

The Schecter C-1 Plus is an attractive alternative to a Les Paul. Even though it's not a singlecut, this guitar features all the ingredients that make up the Les Paul sound, masked in somewhat of a Stratocaster body.

Its set neck is one of the most comfortable I've played, and the fretwork is one of the cleanest you can find in any guitar around this price. The mahogany body is finished with a detailed flamed maple top.

The humbuckers are Duncan Designed, they come with push/ pull coil tap switches on the volume and tone knobs to split them into single coils. Notice that with this format you get a sound not possible with a 5 way switch, the formation of a humbucker by 2 tapped humbuckers.
