Epiphone Les Paul Standard: Plus vs Plain top

As we all know there are many good guitars based around this design, but having the license to fully replicate this legend definitely has advantages.

Korean made Epiphone guitars suffered from lack of attention in minor but important details. Cheap electronics, sloppy binding, sharp frets, etc.
With the Chinese ones all those seem to be issues of the past.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

Those looking for the classic flamed sunburst finish of a Les Paul should have no complaints about the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus. Some guitars, the PRS SE for example, just have a picture of a flamed maple top. Epiphone offers both the wood and the look.

If you have a chance go to a local store and grab one, hold it perpendicular to your body and rotate it back and forth. You'll see lines almost like in 3D coming from the maple top. This guitar has an outstanding finish.

The back of the body and neck are transparent, you see the patterns of that particular piece of wood. The tint of the lacquer varies with the finish you choose, the amberburst has a light amber color that blends perfectly with the top, while the cherry sunburst has a transparent red.

The neck is a replica of the Gibson's 60's neck, in my opinion it's close but doesn't feel exactly the same, still it's very comfortable and way thinner than the regular 50's neck. The fretwork and overall craftsmanship are very clean, the tuners are original Grover.

The pickups are modeled after the Gibson 498T and 490R humbuckers. These provide a modern sound due to an increased upper mid range response. There are plenty of harmonics from the bridge and a decent early Clapton's tone at the neck.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The only differences between the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus and the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top are the flamed finish and the fact that this guitar is not available in a lefty model.

This is purely cosmetic and doesn't change anything to the sound or performance of the guitar. Playability, neck, pickups and everything else are all exactly the same as the Standard Plus.

There are a lot of players that regardless of price prefer a Plain Top finish, the Epiphone Les Paul Plain Top is 20% cheaper than the Standard Plus. In these times that could really help.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Ebony Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard Ebony is the most affordable Epiphone Les Paul Standard available. It's a $150 less than the Standard Plus, mainly because of its finish.

The specifications of this guitar are all exactly the same as the Standard Plus and Plain Top. The finish of the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus is impressive, but for those who truly prefer this color this electric guitar represents a very good deal.
