Epiphone Les Paul Standard Vintage Sunburs Review: Plus vs Plain Top

I live very close to the GC and Sam Ash stores in Hollywood, the Epiphone Les Paul Slash vintage sunburst was released at GC, while the gold top at SA a few months later. As a fan of Slash for the last 15 years I was excited to be close to these events.

But I'll admit that these two guitars don't impress me much. I feel that with a couple of the same pickups the Epiphone Les Paul Standard, Plus or Plain Top, would perform almost equally.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

It's easy to find yourself staring minutes at a time at the finish of a brand new Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Vintage Sunburst. The level of detail on the Plus flamed top looks very 3 dimensional.

The sound of these guitars lean more towards Hard Rock, but they are versatile enough to handle any style convincingly: Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Latin, etc.

I've plugged this guitar to many amps, from little wonders like the Roland Microcube to $5,000+ 70's Marshalls and it always excels at Hard Rock.
The sound of this guitar is not likely to be your weak link.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

I've learned that guitars with flamed and quilted tops attract a lot more players than the ones that don't. But the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top is an exemption.

For a $100.00 less it's identical to the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus, minus the flamed top. This item does not change anything in the sound or playability of the guitar and is purely a cosmetic feature.

The difference in price could afford something very useful: a hard shell case, good pickups, a multieffects pedal or a practice amp. A lot of players happen to prefer the Plain Top finish anyways.

Epiphone Les Paul Custom Flame Top Review

Sound: 4/5
Playability: 4/5
Construction Quality: 4/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 4/5

I used to work in a shop where they have some of the nicest Les Paul guitars in America, way up there in the fifth row near the ceiling there are some Gibson Les Paul Custom guitars going for almost $5,000.

Somehow an Epiphone Les Paul Custom in Vintage Sunburst ended up there. When we noticed we started laughing, from where we were standing the Epiphone looked just as good as the others, and the price didn't a comma.

The Epiphone Les Paul Custom differs from the Standard by: binding on the back as well as the front of the body, gold hardware, split mother of pearl inlays in the headstock, block inlays in the fretboard and a higher flamed maple top.

All that is mainly cosmetic, their playability and sound are very close. The looks of this guitar are impressive, but looks it's not everything. For this price we are getting very close to the Faded Gibson Les Paul guitars which are in a different league.
