How I came to Know of Erik The Flute Maker
we decided to go to the local fair grounds to our first Medieval Festival. I had always seen the commercials and thought it looked like fun but had never went.
Well this was the day !
An artists paradise
We arrived well before noon to set off on an adventure I will never forget. As soon as we we were walking to the entrance the atmosphere was beginning to change. The air seemed a bit fresher a little more crisp than the usual. Around us were people just like us but not of this time. Men in kilts blowing bagpipes, Beggars and fools wandering in the gates we were about to enter."What had I gotten us into" is all I could think.
As we passed through the gates dozens of new scents lofted past my nose, I could hear the shouts of merchants promoting there products.. Every where I looked was without modern intervention. Suddenly we had been transferred to another era.
The Renaissance !
Ahh ! A Sunday Afternnon

Bring me some Ale Wench !
Being what I claim, a "Masculine Fellow" I automatically noticed that every one I seen was carrying what I believed to be Beer.(turns out its not beer ) Instantly I noticed the line outside of a small shop. "Free samples" was the words I closed in on and stepped right in line. Here I found samples of homemade ale just waiting for my attention. I gladly handed the man my $5 for a pint size resealable and refillable bottle of Odin's Ale.What a great start.
As we walked down what seemed like a small village street our eyes wondered all the crafts and displays. From paintings to wall hangings, necklaces and swords the new world was filled with bounty.
As my little guy's eye became affixed on a Treasure chest he slowly gravitated to it's calling. Just as he was about to touch it
out jumped a Pirate! "If you going to steel my treasure steal it right".
Talk about funny!
After taking our time to cover the grounds we decided to attend a jousting event. Here we were witness to an amazing sport as we shouted for our favorite and booed his opposition with a full crowd in the stands.
After some archery practice with my son we happened upon acrobats getting ready and walking the streets in stilts shouting for all to come enjoy the amazing feats they were about to perform. How could we resist. It was ours for the taking all we needed to do was...
Walk this way.
The Instument
After a couple hours of walking and entertainment we were standing in the center of the village when we wondered into a small merchant selling carved wooded staffs and bamboo flutes. Here we found beautiful hand carved products just waiting to be bargained for. After some careful negotiations we came away with a Wizards Staff and a small hand made b- flute. We spent the rest of the day watching human chess and took in another showing of jousting. After about 6 to 7 hours of living in the Renaissance it was time to go.
We will definitely return to this event but next time we plan to go in costume.

What about the Flute Maker

The B- Flute
Well after the day of festivities were gone and we settled back home I started to "attempt" to blow this flute. All day we had heard interesting melody being played in the street. So I was thinking hey how hard can it be. LOL ! I know !
Well as it turns out it requires a bit of skill but practice seems to get some quick results. But what transpired while I was learning the basic notes was exhilarating. Slowly I would blow and soothing melody would explode. Somehow with the release of air I felt an extreme calm. It was as if the stress of every day life was just passed on to where it came.
Over the next few weeks I dove into Google and Yahoo to find all I could about bamboo flutes. Listening to everything from Native American flute music to Irish folk songs. I investigated the making and playing of flutes for a few weeks but was always drawn back to Erik the Flute Maker. As he seemed to represent what I felt when I was playing.
After about a month of practicing when the flute called. We decided to go to a local fair one evening. As usual I had had a long day at work. So it took me a while to comfort up to the sudden "Fair" mode. But within an hour I had let go of work and was knee deep in vendors and shows.
One of the things that I had been thinking through out my day was the Flute is calling me. I needed to unwind and release the days events.
As luck would have it my family decided to take the opportunity to inform me that Princess Madison had decided that day to use my flute as a chew toy.
So that evening I decided to get a Meditation Flute by Erik the Flute Maker. I spent the rest of the evening looking at the website and recognizing the wonderful charity work that was being done.

A Glimpse into a Flutemaking and Spirituality
What stood out above all else was the UN-selfish behavior I witnessed.
The acts of a man in this day and age coming across extreme circumstance and reaching out and doing something to improve the lives of those less fortunate. Utilizing his talents to lift up the spirits and future of his fellow man. I applaud you Sir !

Very cool lens! I love bamboo flutes, I used to have one many, many years ago. The same flutemaker also made a bamboo saxophone and I always wanted to get one. We have lots of bamboo growing around us, I'd love to start making flutes with it. It's the tuning of the flutes that would be the hard part for me.
I love your pics and the videos! I've always wanted to go to a Renaissance Fair, your photos are so good I almost feel like I was there.
