New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising of two large islands, the North Island and the South Island. In Maori, New Zealand has come to be known as Aotearoa, translated into English as The Land of the Long White Cloud.

As the country's original inhabitants, Maori are tangata whenua (the people of the land). Maori first arrived here from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki over 1000 years ago. The language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.

Maori culture is a rich and varied one, and includes traditional and contemporary arts. Traditional Maori art such as carving, weaving, kapa haka (group performance), whaikorero (oratory) and moko (tattoo) are practised throughout the country. Practitioners following in the footsteps of their tipuna (ancestors) replicating the techniques used hundreds of years ago, yet also developing exciting new techniques and art forms.

Ethnic Aotearoa Graffiti

Graffiti has existed at least since the days of ancient civilizations such as classical Greece and the Roman Empire. The inscriptions of this order traced by pilgrims, between the fourth and ninth centuries, on the walls of the galleries, proved invaluable to De Rossi and later archaeologists in their explorations of the Roman catacombs.

Nowadays graffiti is synonymous with Hip-Hop and is of the 4 main elements of the Hip Hop culture (along with the MC the DJ and Break dancing). However its definitely a misunderstood art form. As graffiti has grown, so too has its character. What began as an urban lower-income protest, nationally, graffiti now spans all racial and economic groups.

Today, graffiti art is flourishing and will continue to flourish, whether it is accepted by art institutions or not. Graffiti is the name of an artform, a style of art. Graffiti can be created in any medium an any surface, in two dimentions or three. "Graffiti" and "tagging" are not interchangeable terms.

Modern Graffiti art, which began in New York is now all over the world and in our popular culture. Corporate marketing campaigns and pop music employ Graffiti art among other things to gain credibility with the youth.

Ethnic Aotearoa Henna

The art of Mehendi has existed for centuries. The exact place of its origin is difficult to track because of centuries of people in different cultures moving through the continents and taking their art forms with them and therefore sharing their art with everyone along the way. Henna is an ancient technique of design, which was developed in the Middle East and has been used for centuries as decorative body art.

There are three main traditions that can be recognized, aside from the modern use of henna as a trendy temporary tattoo. Generally, Arabic (Middle-eastern) mehndi features large, floral patterns on hands and feet, while Indian (Asian) mendhi uses fine lines, lacy, floral and paisley patterns covering entire hands, forearms, feet and shins; and African mehndi art is large, and bold with geometrically patterned angles.

In recent popular culture, mehndi has enjoyed a renewal. Western musicians and Hollywood personalities adopted and altered the tradition so that mehndi, as a temporary, pain-free body decoration alternative to tattooing grew to be seen as hottest new fashion accessory among women and men. This intricate and beautiful style of design has been the influence in this range of T-Shirt art.

Celtic Art and Knotwork

Ethnic Aotearoa Celtic

Celtic art and culture date back as far as the 8th century B.C. Until recently, much was unknown about this fascinating culture. But thanks to recent archaeological excavation and findings, a greater understand of the Celtic people has been developed. Tribes were bound together by speech, customs, and religion, rather than a centralized government.

Because of this, the art of the culture contained specific designs for spiritual meaning. Celtic Knotwork is probably the best known style of Celtic design. The intertwined patterns of never-ending lines appealed to the Celts, symbolizing their ideas of eternal life and the intricate relationship of humanity with both the divine and the natural worlds.

The Celts were not a people for writing things down. They passed down their traditions and their history by word of mouth and later in their artwork and symbolism. Celtic symbolism explains how they felt about the universe, life, death and the result of the changing seasons, so important to people who lived off the land. Celtic Symbolism reflects the human spirit, the ambitions and desires, aspirations and fears, and beliefs of the "otherworld" of fellow humans two thousand years ago.

Ethnic Aotearoa Tribal

In recent years Tribal Tattoos have enjoyed a revival. Tribal Tattoos have a simple appeal : we like the way they look on us, It reinforces a positive feeling about ourselves and connects us some how to an element of mystery and ancient activity.

Western culture now has a widespread resurgence and acceptance of the Tribal practice of Tattooing. More and more research on Tribal people, their arts, Tattoos, and lifestyles, and more and more available images of Tattooed people have led to western peoples interest in Tribal Tattoos.

Many of these ancient patterns have given way to swirls, curvilinear designs, key-patterns, spikes, knots, and totems that belong to the creator of the design and the bearer of the art more so than any tribe. Pretechnological designs (i.e.,Black Tribal) give the wearer a link to the origins of all present human society, a past Tribal culture wherein the Tattoo had an inner meaning to the wearer , not just a modern symbol of our present culture. Even though the majority of these modern tribal tattoo designs bare no true tribal designation, when worn by those that understand where they are based they honor those that have passed and appear to be founding the creation of what may be known to future historians as "the new tribe".
