Sarasota, Florida to Honor Dr. Clark
Recipient of at least three honorary degrees, Dr Clark also has received honors including flag-carrying ones, awards, fishes named after her, buildings named for her, books dedicated to her and biographies written about her.
Her journey as "The Shark Lady" began one Saturday morning in 1931 when her mother took her to Battery Park Aquarium, now New York Aquarium. She found the fish mesmerizing and resolved to spend her life studying them.
That career decision gave us Mote Marine Laboratory, which Dr Clark founded in 1955 as Cape Haze Marine Laboratory. Mote Marine now occupies a 10.5-acre (42,000 m2) campus in Sarasota, with field stations and public exhibits in Key West and field stations in Summerland Key and Charlotte Harbor, Florida.
