What is Storytelling?
CELEBRATING THE ANCIENT ORAL TRADITION
It isn't reading a story, its telling a tale from memory... such tales are never the same twice!
It is a performance skill, perhaps one of the oldest performance skills of all.
Like all kinds of performance, it requires an audience. Listening to stories is a skill too, and it requires practice!
What is Exeter Story Club?
Who Goes to the Story Club?
No one at the Story Club has to tell a story. Some people come to the club because they have a story they want to tell, others come just to listen.
There is plenty of room for both tellers, and listeners. Some of our storytellers will be telling a story for the very first time, others may be telling an old favourite. Some of our regular tellers are professional, most are not.
All are welcome.
What kind of stories might I hear?
You can hear all kinds of stories told in all kinds of ways. Some may be as long as twenty minutes in length others may just be a minute long. Some may make you laugh, some may make you cry. The style of telling will vary a lot. Some tellers sit and tell their tale as a narrator; others will move around and act out the part of different characters in the story. Some people may play a musical instrument or sing part of their story.
There is no "right" way to do storytelling.
When Does It Happen?
The club meets every month on the first wednesday of the month.
The club starts at 8pm stories usually start by 8.30 and usually run on until around 11pm.
Any changes to the schedule will be posted here.
