Why did you pick your lensmaster name?

A name is all it takes sometimes to peek my interest, and I have noticed that I don't have a clue why many of you chose the lensmaster name you have. Tell us the story behind your name.

Unlike some lensmasters I have come across (cough...gypsypirate) I usually don't remember a lensmaster's "real name" that pops up somewhere once in a blue moon. For me, I just remember your lensmaster name.

And if you don't want to tell us the real reason why you chose that name, then lie to us, but make it a great story.

Explain Your Name

Why did you pick that?

Tell us the story behind your lensmaster name. Why did you pick it? What does it mean?

If you have numbers at the end of your name, what do they mean? (Janet21 and Susan52 I'm talking to you.)

Whether it is a great story or a boring one we want to know. And, if you don't want to tell us, then lie to us. :)

In Oct. 2005 I read about Etsy in the LA Times. I figured I would sign up for a shop and started thinking about a shop name. With the help of the Thesaurus I came up with paperfacets to compliment my tea bag folding greetings and paper goods. Have used the name ever since for both shops and twitter. Thanks for asking. Kylyssa wrote...

I created the name Kylyssa around 1980ish as the name of a chaotic evil character I played in Dungeons & Dragons. Later, I named my cat Kylyssa, due to the fact that she was quite chaotic and liked to bite me as I lay sleeping which I thought was a little bit evil.

My given birth name is a very, very common and unremarkable name so, when I started writing, I chose my fabricated first name of Kylyssa and added it to my birth surname to increase the chances that people would find my name memorable. The fact that numerous people told me the name I'd created was beautiful and exotic was a major factor in choosing it as my online nom de plume.

Years back, I submitted the name 'Kylyssa' to a number of baby name websites and it can now be found at several.

SEE are my initials and so I played around with words that would go with it. Being a crunchy-granola sort of person I added Green, which is also my favourite colour. I almost was mesee but it made me think of "messsy" and I really saw no need for the world to know the horrible truth about me.

I was my52cents on eBay and a few other places, but I wanted my real name to be part of my id here, so I stuck the 52 onto the end of my name to tie the two ids together. Now I use the Susan52 most places.

I just used my name. Why not - got nothing to hide. I do have clever monikers, handles and aliases all over the web, but these articles (the lenses) I have put time into, so therefore I would rather people identify them with me. If someone Googles me, then this is one of the things I would like them to find.

cryptid wrote...

Cryptid, I chose it for 2 reasons really. First, musically speaking it is the name I go under. I would like to get a full band together and work of the name, actually. Secondly, the definition is interesting. It basically is what all creatures are called that are publically believed in by alot of people, but not scientifically proven. An example would be big foot. Its pretty cool.

A combination of something I wish I had more of and one of my favorite herbs~ Thyme2dream was my first screenname anywhere. By the time I was ready to start my business, it was really me and it was everywhere- just seemed a natural fit for me to keep it as my business name as well.

AJ stands for Always Juggling. I am mother (4 children), wife, would be writer and a Geminii - what more need I say? The 2008 is the year I decided to be a writer, so it has huge significance. But, if I am honest, I had to tack a number on because the name "AJ" was grabbed on most websites years ago!

Pastiche wrote...

I never had a nickname as a kid - it's hard to shorten LEE, especially for a female. I'm Pastiche because my life as a creative has always been a hodge podge-medley-jumble of various things that interest me and to me are related but perhaps not to anyone else it's kinda the polar twin of niche. I've used the name online for more than a decade so I'm already famous (so to speak) ... as Pastiche.

eBay came first (for me) and Treasures By Brenda is my eBay store name. I made the decision to carry the name through to Squidoo since my reason for writing lenses was originally to promote my business. I hope people think of me as 'Brenda' when they are corresponding with me!

What's in a name?

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." I'm not sure whether I agree with Shakespeare on this one. If squidoo.com was makepagesforcash.com it just would not smell as sweet. And, I am quite sure kids would like 'Ovaltine' better if they called it 'Chocolate-O Drink' (which is what we call it in our house).

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?

Sure, a name is just a label, it is not the being.

Jewelsofawe says:

Ah, I have a lens called a rose by any other name and it is about names of course

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

A name is simply a label. That counts for a lot for first impressions...but after that, quality counts (lenses or otherwise.) Your kids probably wouldn't drink Ovaltine or Chocolate-O Drink if it tasted awful!

spirituality says:

A great name may help - but if the lens sucks, it still sucks.

Nope. The name makes all the difference.

Susan52 says:

Not if the rose were online. A good, memorable screen name is very important, I think.

dannystaple says:

I am always careful naming something. Although you should never judge a person by their name, a silly name is immediately a sign that something is not quite on. In business - a projects name may be all the finance people see - and may kill it stone dead before they even know what it is.

cryptid says:

Well, if Shakespeares name was something like Jake; I am sure no one would be flocking to read his material. Most writers have unique names.

inkserotica says:

I'm with aj on this one; I get extremely angry if my name is mispronounced or I'm called a name very similar to mine: my name is Carolyn but often get called Caroline (it's nothing like it in spelling of pronounciation!) So, I shorten my name to Carrie to avoid that! I agree that it shows a lack of respect and laziness.

aj2008 says:

Names are our identity. And identity is such a personal thing. I get very cross with people who mispronounce other people's names - I think it shows: a0 an inability to listen b) a lack of respect

I like nicknames for a bit of fun, but they have a time and place. If I am posting on a silly flamewar on some forum, which I rarely have time for these days, I will use a nickname. Outside of that, I pretty much use my real name for everything. I was on the net in '96, when nicknames were the done thing. I like to think I grew out of it.
