Delving Into the Paranormal
Many things that we can't explain or understand, we don't believe in or think is real. Knowledge is power. Just because we aren't able to explain it or have seen it with our own eyes, doesn't mean it's not real. After all, television, computers, electricity, and all our other modern conveniences were unheard of in our ancestors day, but is commonplace now. There are things we haven't even thought of yet, that will come to pass one day that will be commonplace for a newer generation. Moses did not drive around the desert in a Ford or cross the Red Sea in a jet, but these things were available, and we can use them as we discover them. Inventions of all kinds are coming about daily, as man is inspired. So, let's explore a few things we haven't yet found a way to explain, with an open mind. And keep in mind that one day some of these unexplained things we may be able to explain. Just because we don't understand them now, doesn't mean they are unreal or unexplainable. After all, when you teach a child that 2plus2=4, until he or she grasps the concept of it, they are not sure, but 2plus2 is STILL 4. So, some things are real whether or not we choose to believe in it!

UFO and Other Conspiracy Theories Concerning Area 51
Its secretive nature and undoubted connection to classified aircraft research, together with reports of unusual phenomena, have led Area 51 to become a focus of modern UFO and conspiracy theories. Some of the unconventional activities claimed to be underway at Area 51 include:
* The storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft (including material supposedly recovered at Roswell), the study of their occupants (living and dead), and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology.
* Meetings or joint undertakings with extraterrestrials.
* The development of exotic energy weapons (for SDI applications or otherwise) or means of weather control.
* The development of time travel technology.
* The development of unusual and exotic propulsion systems related to the Aurora Program (see Aurora aircraft).
* Activities related to a supposed shadowy one world government and or the Majestic Twelve organization.
Many of the hypotheses concern underground facilities at Groom or at nearby Papoose Lake, and include claims of a transcontinental underground railroad system, a disappearing airstrip (nicknamed the "Cheshire Airstrip", after Lewis Carroll's Cheshire cat) which briefly appears when water is sprayed onto its camouflaged asphalt, and engineering based on alien technology. In 1989, Bob Lazar claimed that he had worked at a facility at Papoose Lake (which he called S-4) on such a U.S. Government flying saucer.
Another hypothesis is that Area 51 is a place which simulates the environment of the moon. In 2000-2001, Fox Television broadcast a show about Apollo moon landing hoax accusations, in which it was suggested that the entire moon landing in 1969 was a hoax and was filmed in parts of Area 51.
Others, however, claim that during the mid 1990s, the most secret work previously done at Groom was quietly moved to other facilities, including Dugway Proving Ground in Utah,(see link below) and that the continued secrecy around Groom is largely a successful attempt at misdirection.
In July 1996, a man named "Victor" announced on Art Bell's Coast to Coast AM radio show that he had a videotape of an alien interrogation which had taken place in Area 51. He claimed that he had made a copy of the tape during a scheduled transfer of analogue videotape files on the base into digital form, and had then smuggled the copy out of Area 51. The video appears to show the head of an alien creature in a dark interrogation room, allegedly using telepathy to communicate with military personnel and scientists. The footage was eventually included in a video documentary entitled Area 51: The Alien Interview.

The base does not appear on public U.S. government maps; the USGS topographic map for the area only shows the long-disused Groom Mine, and the civil aviation chart for Nevada shows a large restricted area, but defines it as part of the Nellis restricted airspace. Similarly the National Atlas page showing federal lands in Nevada does not distinguish between the Groom block and other parts of the Nellis range. Although officially declassified, the original film taken by U.S. Corona spy satellite in the 1960s has been altered prior to declassification; in answer to freedom of information queries, the government responds that these exposures (which map to Groom and the entire NAFR) appear to have been destroyed.

OPERATIONS AT GROOM LAKE
Groom Lake is not a conventional airbase, as frontline units are not normally deployed there. It instead appears to be used during the development, testing, and training phases for new aircraft. Once these aircraft have been approved by the United States Air Force or other agencies such as the CIA, operation of that aircraft is generally conducted from a normal air force base. Groom is reported, however, to be the permanent home for a small number of Soviet-designed aircraft (obtained by various means), which are analyzed and used for training purposes.
Soviet spy satellites obtained photographs of the Groom Lake area during the height of the Cold War, and later civilian satellites produced detailed images of the base and its surroundings. These images support only modest conclusions about the base; they depict a nondescript base, long airstrip, hangars and the lake, but nothing that supports some of the claims about underground facilities.
Though no ICAO identifier for the base appears on any official document, in December 2007, airline pilots noticed that the base had appeared in their aircraft navigation systems' latest Jeppesen database revision as "KXTA".

Area 51 in Popular Culture
The numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Area 51 have granted it a fairly high profile in popular culture, specifically in the area of science fiction. There have been literally dozens of movies or television shows which deal with fictionalized events or happenings at the site. Perhaps the most well-known example is the 1996 action film Independence Day, in which the complex is shown to have been studying the crashed scout ship from the Roswell UFO incident of 1947. The heroes of the film later make their final attack from the airstrips at the base, and in a nod to established fact, Randy Quaid's character Russell Casse at one point refers to the base not being shown on a state map of Nevada.
The 1998-2001 television series Seven Days took place largely inside the Area 51 complex itself, with the base depicted as being run by a covert National Security Agency operation which used time-travel made possible by alien technology recovered from the 1947 Roswell UFO incident.
Also, in the game RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, one of the parks is called 'Broom Lake' and is run by a group of CIA operatives.

Easter Island in the South Pacific
Easter Island is a mysterious island in the South Pacific. Its inhabitants have long since vanished without a trace except for the giant Moai. These giant statues are so large and heavy that modern man has had a difficult time recreating them without modern tools. Tools the original inhabitants most certainly couldn't possess.
Easter Island, a 64 square mile speck in the vast Pacific Ocean, is perhaps the world's most remote inhabited island.
The island is off the beaten track, 2300 miles ((3700 km) west of Chile and about the same distance from Tahiti. The nearest habitation is Pitcairn island 1400 miles away.
One puzzle is how did the Polynesians manage to get this far around AD 400, navigating the open seas for at least 2 weeks at a stretch.
Anthropologists believe that the voyaging canoes of the Polynesians moved southward, northward and southeast to inhabit Easter Island, Hawaii and New Zealand about the same time. The Polynesians seafarers venerated the ocean and used it to travel far and wide. According to legend some 1500 years ago a Polynesian chief, Hotu Matu'a (the great parent) came to Easter Island in a double canoe from Polynesia with his wife and people landing on Anakena Beach.
An early name for Easter Island was Te-Pito - Te-Henua or "land's end" as it surely was, miles away from Polynesia.
Today, Rapa nui or Easter Island belongs to Chile with only about 2000 Pacific Islanders (Rapanui people) still living on the island, mostly in Hanga Roa the only town on the island. The only port of the island "Cooks Bay" is located here, said to be the place where Captain Cook downed anchor in 1722.
The most intriguing thing about the island is the hundreds of massive statues called Moai, which line the coast. These were chiseled out of the volcanic basalt, which is found further inland. The other mystifying thing is how these massive monoliths (average weight 14 tons, height 13 feet) were transported to the coast and why. With different theories existing, it still remains as much a mystery today as it was when the "moais" first came to light.
About 900 of them exist in good condition. The Moai building and transportation perhaps took place between 1400 to 1600. What were the moais? Were they sprits of ancestors or important high-ranking men? We do not know, yet.
Anakena Beach remains the most Polynesian looking part of the island with swaying coconut palms and white sandy beaches. There is an Ahu with 6 Moai standing guard. This is where the island's first settlers are said to have landed. Ahu Tahai near the town of Hanga Roa is perhaps the earliest Ahu structures on the island going back to 690 AD. Ahu Akivi and Ahu Vinapu are 2 other important Ahu on the island.
Thor Heyerdahl, the explorer, felt that Ahu Vinapu had shades of Peruvian influence.
Rano Rarku, the main quarry for the statues looks like a virtual graveyard for Moai today. Several half carved, broken and abandoned statues lie strewn everywhere.
Paro, the island's largest Moai weighing 82 tons and is over 32 ft tall, lies face down today. How was such a heavy Moai transported in ancient times? The mystery will perhaps remain unanswered.
The English name of the island has no real religious significance, but commemorates the island's European discovery by a Dutch exploration vessel on Easter Sunday in 1722.
Today Easter Island is a large open air national park with Moai scattered all over though principally near the coast, guarding it perhaps from evil forces and preserving it for posterity. You can reach Easter Island on a cruise ship or by taking a five-hour flight from Santiago in Chile.

Mystery of the Sphinx
In ancient Egypt, the Sphinx is a male statue of a lion with the head of a human, sometimes with wings. Most sphinxes however represent a king in his appearance as the sun god. The name "sphinx" was applied to the portraits of kings by the Greeks who visited Egypt in later centuries, because of the similarity of these statues to their Sphinx. The best known specimen is the Great Sphinx of Giza (on the western bank of the Nile) which is not a sphinx at all but the representation of the head of king Khaf-Ra (Chephren) on the body of a crouching body. It was supposedly built in the 4th dynasty (2723-2563 BCE), although others claim it dates back to the 7th-5th millennium.

The Greek Sphinx was a demon of death and destruction and bad luck. She was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It was a female creature, sometimes depicted as a winged lion with a feminine head, and sometimes as a female with the breast, paws and claws of a lion, a snake tail and bird wings. She sat on a high rock near Thebes and posed a riddle to all who passed. The riddle was: "What animal is that which in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three?" Those who could not solve the riddle were strangled by her. Finally Oedipus came along and he was the only who could answer that it was "Man, who in childhood creeps on hands and knees, in manhood walks erect, and in old age with the aid of a staff." The Sphinx was so mortified at the solving of her riddle that she cast herself down from the rock and perished.
The name 'sphinx' is derived from the Greek sphingo, which means "to strangle". In ancient Assyrian myths, the sphinx usually appears as a guardian of temple entrances.

Many people in Taos have experienced what is termed the Taos Hum, a noise whose source and nature are a mystery for those who claim to have heard it, and for which a variety of theories have been advanced. The lore of this phenomenon has become part of the appeal of this unique community which has many quirks and urban legends.
Oddly, only about 2 percent of Taos residents report hearing the sound. Some believe it is caused by unusual acoustics; others suspect mass hysteria or some secret, sinister purpose. Whether described as a whir, hum, or buzz and whether psychological, natural, or supernatural no one has yet been able to locate the sound's origin.
Three years ago Congress directed scientists and observers from some of the most prestigious research institutes in the nation to look into a strange low frequency noise heard by residents in and around the small town of Taos, New Mexico. For years those who had heard the noise, often described by them as a "hum", had been looking for answers. No one was sure when it began, but its persistence led first a few and then many of those who heard it (called "hearers" by each other) to band together. In 1993 they found their way to Congress.
The first goal of the investigative team was to interview hearers and try to determine the nature of the hum  the sound it made, its frequency, timing and its effects on those who heard it. Next the team planned to survey residents of Taos and the surrounding communities to determine how wide spread the hum was. Finally, the team was to try to isolate and determine the cause of the hum. Important to their effort was the team's clear interest in deter-mining the cause of the phenomenon, rather than questioning the hums existence. There was a generally clear understanding by the investigators that something was happening here, but just exactly what it was seemed to defy definition.
The initial investigation focused on ten hearers and determined certain key facts surrounding the hum. It was persistent. It was heard by only a small number of people. The sound was extremely low on the frequency scale  between 30 and 80Hz. There was variation in how different hearers perceived the sound. Some heard a sound like the low rumbling of a truck while others heard a more steady, pulsing, yet still low sound. Interestingly, the investigators learned that the sound was not limited to the area around Taos, but was, in fact, heard at places all over the country and around the globe.

Who Was Edgar Cayce? Twentieth Century Psychic and Medical Clairvoyant Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) has been called the sleeping prophet, the "father of holistic medicine," and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. For more than 40 years of his adult life, Cayce gave psychic "readings" to thousands of seekers while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses and revealing lives lived in the past and prophecies yet to come. But who, exactly, was Edgar Cayce? Cayce was born on a farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877, and his psychic abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. He was able to see and talk to his late grandfathers spirit, and often played with imaginary friends whom he said were spirits on the other side. He also displayed an uncanny ability to memorize the pages of a book simply by sleeping on it. These gifts labeled the young Cayce as strange, but all Cayce really wanted was to help others, especially children. Later in life, Cayce would find that he had the ability to put himself into a sleep-like state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. In this state of relaxation and meditation, he was able to place his mind in contact with all time and space—the universal consciousness, also known as the super-conscious mind. From there, he could respond to questions as broad as, What are the secrets of the universe? and What is my purpose in life? to as specific as, What can I do to help my arthritis? and How were the pyramids of Egypt built? His responses to these questions came to be called readings, and their insights offer practical help and advice to individuals even today. Although Cayce died more than 60 years ago, the timeliness of the material in the readings—with subjects like how to discovering your mission in life, developing your intuition, exploring ancient mysteries, and taking responsibility for your health--is evidenced by the hundreds of books that have been written on the various aspects of this work as well as the dozen or so titles focusing on Cayces life itself. Together, these books contain information so valuable that even Edgar Cayce himself might have hesitated to predict their impact on the contemporary world. In 1945, the year of his passing, who could have known that terms such as meditation, Akashic records, spiritual growth, auras, soul mates, and holistic health would become household words to millions? The majority of Edgar Cayce's readings deal with holistic health and the treatment of illness. As it was at the time Cayce was giving readings, still today, individuals from all walks of life and belief receive physical relief from illnesses or ailments through information given in the readings—some readings were given as far back as 100 years ago! Yet, although best known for this material, the sleeping Cayce did not seem to be limited to concerns about the physical body. In fact, in their entirety, the readings discuss an astonishing 10,000 different topics. This vast array of subject matter can be narrowed down into a smaller group of topics that, when compiled together, deal with the following five categories: (1) Health-Related Information; (2) Philosophy and Reincarnation; (3) Dreams and Dream Interpretation; (4) ESP and Psychic Phenomena; and (5) Spiritual Growth, Meditation, and Prayer. Further details of Cayce's life and work are explored in the classic book, There Is a River (1942), by Thomas Sugrue, available in hardback, paperback, or audio book versions. Members of Edgar Cayces Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), the nonprofit founded by Cayce in 1931, have access to the entire set of 14,306 readings in a database residing in the member-only section of our Web site.
