The FAFSA

The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. By completing this application, a student can become eligible for a host of grants and financial aids provided by the United States Governemtn. I've worked for a college prep program for almost 10 years, and everytime January comes around, we remind students to turn in their FAFSA as soon as possible. After all, it's free! FAFSA stands for free application for federal student aid. Often times, students may decide not to apply because they are confused by the process or are certain they won't get any aid at all. Still, our advice is to apply. You can't win if you don't get in the game. Many scholarships require a student to demonstrate that they've completed the FAFSA by turning in their SAR, or Student Aid Report. Some students may take themselves out of the running for those scholarships because they didn't complete the FAFSA. It is one of the first things a student should do in their quest to find financial aid for post-secondary education...i.e. COLLEGE!

Get a PIN while you're at it!

These are links to the actual FAFSA and PIN sites. Be careful when doing a web search for FAFSA. Oftentimes, the first returned link is for a business that charges people to help them complete the FAFSA. There's nothing illegal there, but please know that completing the FAFSA is completely free (it's built in the name) and you are paying essentially for their assistance. You may want to consider other resources if you need help completing the FAFSA, such as your school guidance advisor or teacher.

Get a PIN
You'll need to get a PIN if you plan to sign your FAFSA electronically. If you and your parent sign with a PIN, the FAFSA is processed more quickly than with the print and mail in method.
