Shale Gas Testing and Fracking

Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is the process of creating fractures in shale to release natural gas within the formation using water, chemicals, and sand. In order to extract natural gas from the Marcellus Shale wells, horizontal drilling must take place. After a horizontal hole is made in the shale, large amounts of water, sand, and chemicals are injected in order to create additional cracks in the formation. Once these new fractures are created, the natural gas is able to be released from the shale.

Analyzing Marcellus Shale Gas Testing

Due to the amount of water and chemicals being used to conduct fracking, there is often left over material and waste. In order to keep this waste from harming others, analysts come in and test everything. Some of the analyses being conducted for the Marcellus Shale gas testing includes pre-drill survey testing which establishes the initial condition of the soil and groundwater prior to drilling. Another analyses is the spill and release response. This is the process of cleaning up spills, as well as creating buffer zones and disposal sites. Analysts also manage the drilling fluids and cuttings by testing the components of each.

Gas Testing Controversy

Although fracking has been around since 1947, there have been recent legal suits regarding the hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania and Canada. The regulation on hydraulic fracturing includes the U.S. FRAC Act of 2009. This bill was never made law, but held the idea that the EPA would be able to regulate all fracturing in the United States.

Shale Gas Testing: Right or Wrong?

Is Shale Gas Testing a good idea?

Loading

YES!

scotchtapefordays says:

Whether or not Shale Gas Testing is a good idea is dependent on who you ask. For environmentalists, it is most likely frowned upon. However, for those of us who believe that the companies are maintaining the validity of the land, we would say it provides inexpensive access to fuel. To each his own, I guess.

I think it's a good idea. People can now get gas without using corn and other things.

NO!

Bad idea!
