A credit report reflects all of the financial transactions that you have made during your lifetime.  It is up to each and every individual to manage their finances properly and be mindful of all of their financial and credit transactions.  It is also their responsibility to monitor their credit report and report any errors that may end up adversely affecting your credit rating.

There are three major credit agencies that produce and maintain credit reports.  These agencies are the only ones that compile credit reports.  The credit reports that they compile are produced so that they are comfortable for the consumer to read.  No company is required to report credit to all three credit reporting agencies or to contact them.  However a large number of companies do contact one or two credit reporting agencies and report all credit transactions.

You can get your credit report from one of three credit reporting agencies, Experian, TransUnion or Equifax.  Each agency has its own procedure that it follows when they compile a credit report but for the most part the procedures are similar.  If you want to get in touch with any of these three agencies, their websites are:

In 1997 the FACT Act was approved by the United States government.  This FACT act allows individuals to request one free copy of their credit report per year.  Be aware that this means one credit report from one credit reporting agency, not one credit report from each of the three agencies.  You can receive credit reports from the additional two agencies but for a fee between fifteen and twenty dollars.

You can receive a credit report if you visit these websites as well:

When visiting these sites, all you need to do is enter your personal information onto their forms.  Your report will then be visible on your computer and then you can print it at your leisure.

It is important that you check for discrepancies on your credit report on a regular basis.  It should be part of your routines as much as possible.   Some payments may sometimes not be reflected in your credit report so the responsibility is on you to report any errors to the credit reporting agency so that it can be corrected.  You should then be sure a corrected copy of your credit report is sent to you.  If you do find errors to be corrected then you must supply the credit reporting agency with proof that you paid the debt.

If you are applying for a car loan, mortgage loan, or credit card, your approval for these things will be determined by your credit report.  They will look at your credit history and look at the kind of payment and financial history that you have maintained.  Therefore the higher your credit score the higher your chances of approval.  A high credit rating along with a very good income will allow you to obtain better loans more easily.
