One Demon's Thoughts On Being An Angel :)

It would seem that Squidoo's resident demon lover (me) has become an angel, a Squid Angel that is. As is the tradition of Squid Angels, I decided to create a lens about my time as a Squid Angel (or should I say Squid Demon?). Since there are already quite a few lenses out there telling what a Squid Angel is, and how they affect your lenses, I'll not rewrite what is already written, and direct you to those lenses for seeking out that sort of information. On this lens, I will instead, look at what it is I personally look for in a lens, how I determine what makes a lens worthy of being blessed (or cursed? -- don't demons curse not bless?), and what you can do to improve your chances of getting blessed by me.

I hold the record on Squidoo for having rated more lenses than any other lensmaster. Here is my current score:

Lensmaster EelKat has been a member since April 18 2007, has rated 6,048 lenses, favorited 3,139, and has created 405 lenses from scratch. This member's top-ranked page is "How to Start a Publishing Company". See all my lenses

Squidoo's Demon Lover Becomes an Angel?

First off, I'd like to say:

I'M A SQUID ANGEL! YAAAAAAY!

Okay, now that that's out of my system, let's move on . . .

On April 1st, 2009, just 16 days short of my 2nd anniversary on Squidoo, I received an email telling me that I had been picked to be in the next round of Squid Angels.

Timing is everything, or so SEO marketing experts like to tell you, and well, I got a lot of emails on April 1st 2009. I got an email informing me Squidoo had been bought out. One telling me the Giant Squids were going to be on Dave Letterman's show. One informing me that Burger King had stopped selling the Whopper. Several informing me that I's won a million dollars. WordPress informed me my blog (which I hadn't posted on in almost a year now) was the best blog ever and being featured on their home page as such. Yeah . . . it's April Fool's Day, my inbox is full of fake awards, news stories, hoaxes, and other not so real announcements. You could imagine my surprise when I found amid the assortment of pranks, that there was also a very official email which was not a prank, and was informing me of my new Squid Angel status. Wow! My first response was "Yeah, right!" Hey, timing is everything, and you don't tell someone they've been chosen for something on April Fool's Day if you want them to believe you are for real!

So, thinking it was a prank I just replied and thanked them for telling me about it. Huh. Turns out it was just a coincidence that it came on April Fool's Day and I really did get picked to be a Squid Angel. Even bigger WOW!

Okay, let's see . . . So, I'm a Squid Angel, now what? Wait. OMG! I'm a Squid Angel! Wow! How did that happen? Me, the demonic demon lover, forum sniper of 666 posts, affectionately known across the net as "The Beast" or "666OED" (old evil devil) or "The Bride of Sesshomaru" (the dog demon lord of all demons ---> see picture at right). Me? An angel? LOL!

XP always likes to say that not all angels wear white, calling herself Squidoo's Dark Angel. I guess I'll have to be Squidoo's first official Demon. Yeah, that sounds better: I'm not a Squid Angel, I'm a Squid Demon! A Krakon maybe? Krakons: Evil Giant Squids. That's it, I must be a Krakon.

Mystic Journeys Fairy And Wolves Figurine

Wait . . . What is a Squid Angel?

So, What About Me?

Let's see. I'll be an angel for only a short while, I think the job only lasts 4 months, or was it 6 months? Something like that, at least that's what I hear other angels say. So, what is it that an Angel does? The way I see it, a Squid Angel seeks out new lenses and tries to help get the word out that those lenses are out there, by giving them a boost (known as a "blessing"). Likewise, the Angel also seeks out spam and tries to see to it that the spam doesn't take over on Squidoo.

I think of the job of a Squid Angel as being like a flower gardener. You want to head out to your flower garden each day and see lots of bright colored flowers dancing in the breeze, but you get out there, and you notice that there are weeds crowding out your flowers, so your first order of business is to pull out the weeds and feed them to the chickens. Next, you want to showcase your best flowers, so you look around your garden and decide which flowers are the best, and you fix the garden so that you notice these flowers first when entering the garden. That's what being a Squid Angel is like. Squidoo is the garden, the lenses are the flowers, the spam is the weeds, and the angel is the gardener who has to sort the flowers from the weeds and than find the best flowers to showcase.

. . Flower Fairies Heliotrope Fairy Figurine . Fairy on Rose Figurine

Only . . . angels don't prance around in gardens helping flowers grow, faeries do that. Okay. Problem: I don't want to be a Squid Angel, I want to be a Squid Faerie. Solution: I'm not going to be a Squid Angel, I'm going to be a Squid Faerie! Cool! From now on I'm going to be your Squid Faerie Godmother, like Cinderella's Fairy Godmother granting wishes only I'll be granting blessings instead (and Fairies are good while Faeries are evil, notice how I use the dark faerie spelling rather than the light fairy spelling!)

EelKat vs Squidoo

Okay, if you want to see what it's like to be me on Squidoo and get a better understanding of how I look at and create lenses, than you need to read my lenses about how I use Squidoo. This will also help you understand what I look for when blessing lenses

What Type of Squid Angel Are You?

The Apple Blossom Fairy
According to Squidster there are 4 common types of Squid Angels:

Secret Agent - You might never know if and when this Angel was there
Ambassador - Rewards consistent quality and spreads goodwill
Talent Scout - Always on the lookout for fresh talent
Mentor/Adviser - Likes to offer encouragement and advice

Where do I stand? Hard to say. If I had to pick, I'd say somewhere between Ambassador and Talent Scout, with just a touch of Secret Agent.

Why? Because if I like a lens, I'll find some way to feature it and promote it on one of my lenses, and if I don't have an on-topic lens to feature it on, I may just build one. I love to promote other people's lenses, making me an Ambassador Angel.

I remember how hard it was to get started on Squidoo and how I had no idea what I was doing my first few months. Now 2 years later, I find myself actively seeking out new lensmasters each with just a handful of lenses in need of someone to lead others to them. I'm quick to seek out new Squids, making me a Talent Scout Angel.

But sometimes you may never know I've been there, because I don't always leave a comment, in fact, of the 4,000+ lenses I've rated in the past couple of years, less than half I've favorited, and only about half of those have ever seen a comment from me. Commenting is like talking, something I don't do very often, and so I'm often the silent Secret Agent who blessed you quietly as I was passing through.

I don't consider myself to fall into the Mentor/Adviser category, because well, I have Asperger's Syndrome (a type of Autism) which makes it very difficult for me to have one on one interaction with people. I don't talk, I don't make eye contact, I can't understand your jokes so don't laugh at them, and trying to hug me (or even get with in 2 feet of me) could result in my responding with a completely freaked out panic attack. I often do not understand what people say,The Canterbury Bell Fairy because I take their words at face value and than later find out that they meant something totally different than what they had said, which results in a very broad gap in my communication abilities, esp when I say something and people assume I must have meant something other than what I said due to the fact that they would have meant something different.

A typical face to face conversation with me would sound like this:

    They say: "When pigs fly!"

I'll say: "But it's scientifically impossible for pigs to fly and we were not talking about pigs, why are you talking about pigs, what do pigs have to do with it?"

They say: "No, that means I won't do it."

I say: "Than why didn't you just say you wouldn't do it, why did you start talking about farming and start talking about it in such a silly and illogical manner, when you know for a fact that pigs can't fly, and what does you not wanting to do something have to do with pig farming anyways. I don't understand why you changed the subject to pig farming."

That will usually, end the conversation as I walk off talking to myself trying to figure out if it is possible to create flying pigs, and will not hear another word you or any one else says, until I have solved this problem of flying pigs. I will probably than spend the rest of the week searching the library and Google for books and web sites on pig farming and try to find out if there have been any studies made in attempt to create flying pigs. I'll probably end up on Squidoo reading lenses about pigs and flying and make a lens about each if unable to find one already made.

For those who are not familiar with Asperger's Syndrome, think of it as taking Autism, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Agrophobia, and Schizophrenia and than mixing them all together. Or just think Albert Einstein, he had Asperger's Syndrome, as did most every other famous scientist and many authors. We over analyze every thing, can not rest until we find out the reason why things happen, than are compelled to write down our findings in very long winded manners, and usually will spend weeks on end with out any contact with a single living being because we become so obsessed with finding the answer, that we lose all track of time and somehow our brains shut out the fact that there are other people in the world whom we, while in the obsessed state, can neither see nor hear and are completely unaware of their existence.

Lena Liu Inspirations Of Hope Floral Art Collectible Porcelain Angel FigurineThe end result is that it is not really possible for me to be a Mentor/Advisor Angel because my ability to communicate with others is limited to actual fact of the matter and most people seem to only understand things if you say something other than what you meant to say and I can't understand why they do it or how it is done.

Actually, I think I would more likely to fall into a category not on Squidster's List: Analytical Angel. Why? Because I analyze the hell out of everything. I have to look at everything from all angles inside out and upside down, before I can form an opinion about it and before I can tell some one else I liked it. I have to know what makes it tick. (As I'm sure you can tell just by the way I'm dissecting the types of Angel category I fall under.) Don't take my analyzing your lens before blessing it, personally, because I do this with everything. It's what Aspies do. I do this with Squidoo all the time.

ANGEL KISSES KEWPIEWhat does this all mean to you and your lens? This means that if I've blessed your lens, than you can be sure that I've read every inch of it, than went to your profile and looked to see what other lenses you made, checked out a few (or all) of those, and probably blessed more than one lens while I was there. It also means that I didn't stop there, and if you added your FaceBook, Twitter, Zazzle, CafePress, Lulu, and MySpace accounts it your profile, that I most likely went to each of those and read everything on them too, and if I found other links from there to other sites you manage, that I probably checked out all of those too. If you have a blog, I probably read several posts from it (if not the entire blog), and I very likely started following it. Why would I take blessing a single lens and evolve it into a scientific study of every site you made? Because that is just what someone with Asperger's Syndrome does: analyze every aspect of everything they come into contact with.

And there you have it, the type of Squid Angel I am: I'm the Analytical Type.

The Categories:

Squidoo has 32 categories.
There are 32 Squid Angels.
Each category has 5 Angels assigned to it.
Each Angel gets assigned to 5 categories.

I'm not sure exactly how that all adds up in the end, but, that's the figures Squidoo gives about it.

Dream Weaver Angel Wall Decor So, what does this mean for you? What it means is, that while I can bless any lens I happen to come across, I have been assigned to certain areas of Squidoo, and am supposed to be focusing most of my attention to those areas, and seeing to it that they don't get over run with Spamand Squid Don'ts, while helping the good stuff float to the top for every one to see.

QUESTION: How do I request a blessing?

Okay, first off, should you or should you not send a blessing request? Well, some Squid Angels ask you to send them requests, some don't care, some don't like requests at all. Me? I'm not sure where I stand on this. While I like getting comments on my lenses, and I'm perfectly okay with your posting links in your comments, I don't want to see off-topic comments and links on my lenses! So, I'm not going to tell you not to send me blessing requests, but I will ask that you not post them in the comment boxes of my other lenses.

It's another one of those Asperger's Syndrome things. I have to have a place for everything and every thing in its place. I alphabetize everything I own, or organize it by color. I know where everything is at any given moment and if anything moves out of place even just a few inches, I can throw a tantrum over it. Why? No idea. All I know is it's something Aspies do and that's why I do it. I am like this with Squidoo as well. I've got this thing about keeping everything in order: alphabetically, by date, and/or by category (thus the reason I created The Lensography Index and why I have built at last count 17 different lensographies in which to group my other lenses.) I keep everything in order and on-topic. This is why when I request links in comments I always say: On-topic link. Things in the wrong place frustrate me. If it's off-topic it's in the wrong place, thus it frustrates me and I have to delete it in order to restore proper balance and symmetry. Does that make sense?

Okay, so you want to send me a blessing request, but how should you go about doing it? Well, that is why I wrote this lens, to give you a place where you can send me a blessing request, without your having to send requests all over all of my other lenses. So send your requests right here on this lens, by posting the url to your lens in the guest book at the bottom.

Or via my FaceBook profile. Actually, the best way to get your lens brought to my attention is through FaceBook.

Walk to Heaven Angel FigurineWhy FaceBook? Well, I spend a lot of time on FaceBook. . . . uhm . . . IMPORTANT NOTICE HERE: I have several hundred FB-Friends, belong to 314 FB-Groups, and so I get about 100 messages a day on FaceBook, thus, I stopped reading my messages a long time ago, simply because I have no time to read them, so DO NOT send a blessing request via a FaceBook message, because I will not see it. In fact, you don't need to send a blessing request via FaceBook at all. All you need to do, is send me a friend request on FaceBook, let me know you are a Squidoo lensmaster so that I can add your profile to my "Squidoo Friends" list. You don't have to do anything else on FaceBook after that.

Your next step is to create top quality lenses, and after you publish/update a lens, be sure to click on the link which sends your update to FaceBook via Squidoo Connect. Every time I log into FaceBook (which is multiple times a day) I scan through my NewsFeed, via my "Squid Friends" list to see what new lenses there are out there, and about half of those I end up visiting. So changes are pretty good, that if you are on my FaceBook friend list, and you use the FaceBook/Squidoo conect option, I'll find your lens without you ever having to send a blessing request at all!

Also, I belong to most, if not all, of the Squidoo groups on FaceBook, and I often search through the link lists on those looking for new lenses to check out. The one I frequent several time a week is listed below. If you belong to that group and post links there, I'll most likely find your lens.

I'm going to add a PS here . . .

P.S.

Don't email me blessing requests, I won't see them. I get an average of 2,000 emails per day. A lot of hate mail, some fan mail, account updates from my hundreds of online accounts, and the general junk mail. I check my email only once or twice a month, on a day when I have time to sift through 40,000+ emails all at once, and of those I only open and read a dozen or so of them. Advice: If you like to read email, don't ever become famous!

EelKat on FaceBook
Send me a friend request, let me know you are a Squidoo Lensmaster when you send the request. After that, just use the Squidoo Connect/FaceBook Connect app to send updates. There's no need to ask me to bless your lens. I'll see the updates on my FB-Home Page.

What's Your Lens?
Join this group on FaceBook, add your lenses to the list. I check this list for new lenses each week. Again, there's no need to ask me to bless your lens. I'll see the new additions on this list. (Note: I do not own this group, so don't post on the group asking for blessings from me!)

Where You Believe There is Magic

Is Your Lens READY To Be Blessed?

Reading these will help you prepare your lens for a blessing:

Things To Do:

10 things you can do to increase you lens' chance of getting blessed by me . . .

Beautiful Angel With Platinum Wings and Heartfilled Inscription.

  1. Love your topic. If you love your topic, it shows through in the lens you build about it. Above all else there is nothing more important that writing about a topic that is near and dear to your heart.

  2. Guest books are a must. Guest book, comment box, reader feedback, duel box, whatever it is, whatever you call it, a lens always looks better when it has one. I'm a strong believer in allowing readers to interact with writers-authors-webmasters. I may not leave a comment, but I like to have that option available to me.

    TIP:

A comment box affects your lensrank too. Every time some one posts a comment on your lens, it goes up slightly in lensrank. Thus the reason I won't bless a lens without one: if you aren't trying to improve your lensrank, than why should I boost it either?

  3. Focus. Ask yourself: Does my lens have a focused topic? Who is my target audience? Your lens has to be about something. I don't care what topic it is that you've chosen, so long as your lens, does have a topic.

  4. Fill it up . . . please! I beg you. I bore easily. I bore quickly. My attention span is erratic. (Oh look a dog! No, it's just a cat. Oh wait, I was supposed to be reading your lens wasn't I? Hey what's that over there?) I need something to make me stop and think. An empty lens is a quick fly-by, that won't even inspire me to check out your profile or join your fan club, let alone rate, fave, or bless! Write lots of words. Add lots of pictures. Give me something to do, something to read, something to ponder while I am there. Polls, videos, something, anything! Squidoo offers hundreds of modules, apps, and widgets, make use of them. Make use of as many of the various modules as possible. The more the merrier, but remember to stay on-topic.

  5. I like big lenses. It's no secret that I like big lenses. I build the biggest lenses Squidoo has ever seen. I like to see big lenses. I know how much time, energy, hard work, and passion goes into building a big-big-mega-big lens. I can appreciate a lensmaster who devoted hours writing, researching, and assembling a lens that took the 3 or 4 weeks to create. I am more likely to bless a lens that I can see you put a lot of hard work into.

  6. I give preference to unique lenses which come alive and trigger an emotional response in me about your personal experiences. Tell me a story. Every day of your life has a different story to tell. Pick an event and tell me about it. Who are you? What did you do? Why did you do it? What happened after you did it? Where did you do it? Will you do it again? I want to do it too, how did you do it? What would you do differently next time?

  7. Network! Networking is very important. Networking is the key to my success both on Squidoo and elsewhere. Networking is good. Don't let me look at your lens and ask you: "Why are you not networking?" While offline I may be a bit of a hermit, online I'm a rampant social butterfly. I'm on FaceBook, and MySpace and ProBoards and NaNoWriMo and Twitter and TagFoot and SecondBrain and AbsoluteWrite and CafePress and Yahoo and eBay and Amazon and Blogger and Zazzle and WordPress and . . . well you get the picture? I have well over 500 accounts, including a few hundred forums, and guess what? I use every one of them!

Okay, so how do you network on Squidoo? #1 is to fill out your profile form! #2 is adding links to your non-Squidoo profiles in Link Lists, and most importantly (at least when it comes to getting blessed) #3 is using the Featured Module on your lens! If you feature other on-topic or otherwise interesting lenses (yours AND those by other lensmasters) on your lens, than it tells me that you are networking and trying to provide helpful and useful information to your readers.

  8. And while we are on the subject, let's talk about your profile: Yes, I do look at it and YES it does effect my decision to bless or not bless!

I will not bless any lens, created by any lensmaster who does not have a profile picture. Doesn't have to be you, just as long as it's not the default Squid! If you haven't done so do it now! Are you featuring 5 lenses yet? No! Why not?

Do you have a lensography and is it listed in the lensography slot? That lensography slot is the first thing I look for when I look at your profile, because besides being an Angel, I also own The Lensography Index. If you have a lensography, I'm more likely to bless a few of your lenses, because I know you are planning to stick around for a while.

Filling in all those blank spaces, tells me you are a lensmaster here to stay. (You'll notice that lensmasters who are here today and gone tomorrow NEVER fill in their profile info!) I don't want to bless a lens if you are not planning on sticking around for a while.

  9. Words are important.

Yes, go ahead and make use of every widget and module there is, widgets are great, I love them, but know that if the only thing on your lens is a bunch of widgets and modules, and no unique original content (words written by you) than, it's not really a blessing worthy lens.

  10. Pictures are also important.

Being an artist means that I am a very visually inclined person. In other words, if I open a lens and see lots of words, but nothing else, I may leave, because there was nothing visually interesting to inspire me to start reading the words.

I need pictures to grab my attention and make me want to read all those words you wrote!

  11. In other words: Does your lens teach me how to do something, make me want to know more about you, spark my interest in support of your cause, inspire me to check out your links, and/or tempt me to buy something? Did you successfully engage my interest and keep my short attention span from moving on to the next lens? Did I learn something new? Well I want to recommend your lens to others? Will I come back to your lens again and again (rather than run out of things to do on my first visit)?

If I can answer yes to these questions, than your lens got blessed!

You won't get dinged, but you won't get blessed either if . . .

Musician Angel

  1. . . . there is no picture in the intro module.

  2. . . . your modules are still using the default titles (New Text with BIG Picture, New Amazon Spotlight, New Video Module, etc.).

  3. . . . there is no guest book, comment box, or duel module on the lens.

  4. . . . it's too short. If you've got less than 5 modules on your lens (not including intro and guest book) it's probably too short to hold my interest, and I really need to stay on your lens long enough to find out I like it, if you want me to bless it.

  5. . . . it's sales modules are not on-topic to the subject of your lens.

Remember: I'm a person that has to have organization and order. I learned the Dewey Decimal System, just so I could properly catalog my private book collection. I buy the Crayola Big Box with 120 crayons and the first thing I do is dump it out and put all the crayons in rainbow order from dark red to light red to light orange to dark orange to dark yellow to light yellow and all the way down the line. I do this with my paints, colored pencils, pastels, and even my clothes. I not only know their order visually, but I have all the names of all 120 colors of the crayons memorized and put them in order that way too.

Having off topic sales modules on your lens is going to be the thing that is going to bug me most of all.

Things Not to Do:

10 reasons why lenses get dinged by me. . .

. . . uhm . . . I couldn't think of ten things . . . oh well . . . I probably won't be doing all that much dinging anyways . . .

  1. Spam. Spam makes good cat food, it does not make good lenses. If you are uncertain what Spam is than read the Spam Lens.

  2. Lack of focus. Off-Topic. BUY ME! BUY ME! BUY ME! Lenses.

If you start out telling me your lens is about cats, than have Amazon and eBay modules selling everything from sunglasses to laptops, I have to wonder, why you said the lens was about cats and what sunglasses and computers have to do with talking about cats. There are plenty of cat items to promote on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Zazzle, CafePress, PepperJam, LinkShare, Commission Junction, Share-a-Sale, and all the rest, so why are you selling everything other than cats on your lens?

I don't care what topic your lens is about, but I do care if it says it's about one topic while selling a completely different topic. If your lens is talking about ATVs while selling everything from weight loss pills to iPods, than it is considered (by me) as Spam.

Keep your lens in focus and keep the products, pictures, and links, on-topic to the subject of your lens, otherwise it looks like you don't care about your readers, and if you don't care about your readers (myself being one of your readers) than why should I care about your lens?

  3. Adult. X-rated. Porn. etc. I focus on family friendly lenses and such lenses are not family friendly. I don't seek these out and thus won't be out there dinging them, because I won't be seeing them to begin with, but if you ask me to review one of them, I will ding it, because you requested my review and well, the ding IS my review. So know now: if you don't want a ding on your Adult-topic lens, than don't request my review of it! Spam is defined as something that is unwanted. Links to adult lenses are unwanted on my lenses, so if you post a link to such a lens in my comment box, even if you are doing so as a blessing request, I will consider it to be Spam and ding it as such!

My account is set for G rated lenses only. I'm a G rated lens only type of angel.

  4. If it's on the Squid Don't List, it's a requirement that any angel who finds it has to ding it no matter what, so be sure to read the Squid Don't List before requesting a blessing from ANY angel!

The Importance of Having a Lensography

Do you have a lensography yet? Is it on the list? When I look for lenses to bless, the first place I go is here:

Still need help getting your lens ready for an Angel Blessing? These will help too!

QUESTION: Will I get dinged for using affiliate banners on my lens?

Wings Of Love Guardian Angel FigurineOMG! No! How hypocritical it would be of me, if I was to do that! sheesh, I have LinkShare, Commision Junction, Share-a-Sale, All-Posters, Art.com, and PepperJam affiliate banners all over every single one of my lenses! Just take a look around this lens you are on right now. Did you know that every single picture on this lens is a clickable banner, selling the product shown in the picture? But, notice how I used only angel banners for a lens about angel blessings?

Fairy Mother and Baby on Morning Glory
Staying on-topic with your affiliate banners is important. Sure, you want to make money with your lenses. Who doesn't? But you got to think about your readers. Your readers came to your lens looking for something. What is it? What were they looking for? Were they looking for lots of banners to click? Not likely. More likely they were looking for some information: a review of a new movie they are not yet certain if they want to buy perhaps, or maybe their kid was just diagnosed with Autism and they are looking for other parents who wrote about their experience. Maybe they want to buy a new pet but are not sure if they should get a cat, a dog, or a goldfish, so they are looking to see what other pet owners have to say about each one.

Garden FairiesStill confused? How about this one: Why are you personally here right now reading this lens? While there are several reasons why you could have come here, the most likely reason is that you are looking for information about Squid Angels and getting your lens considered for a blessing. Okay. Let's consider this: What would you think, if you came here, seeking some helpful info about how to get your lens blessed, but the only thing on this lens was a bunch of links to angels for you to buy? Would that help you answer your questions about wither your less is ready or not for a blessing? No! Would you stay here? No! Why? Because you were not here looking to buy angels, your were here looking for pertinent information. If I had not provided you with any information, you would have closed the page and gone looking for another lens about Squid Angels and how to get your lens blessed. Do you see what I'm getting at now? You have to do the same thing on your own lenses, regardless of the topic.

In answer to your question: No, as long as the banners are on topic to the subject of which your lens is about, I don't care how many banners you add, and you won't get dinged for adding them. But make sure you have more than just banners on your lens. Give your readers, well, something to read. After all, they are called readers for a reason!

I will point out that if you are just adding banners for the sake of adding banners, than banners could prevent you from getting a blessing. Make certain that the banners you add to your lens are relevant and on-topic or don't add them!

QUESTION: You're a coder, do I need to know html to get blessed?

Nope.

Yes, I love html, and yes, my lenses are drowning in it, but html is not something that comes easy for everyone, and I don't expect everyone to know how to do it. If you want to put html on your lens, fine, if not, that's fine too. Squidoo lenses have been around since 2005, and you didn't start seeing html on them at all until fall of 2008, so there are a lot of great lenses out there without a shred of fancy coding on them. Knowing html, is not going to make you lens any more or less likely to get a blessing. Content is king, html is just the tinsel.

P.S. How can I learn html, anyways?

QUESTION: What about spelling? How does spelling effect my chances of getting blessed?

Ouch. Can we change the topic? Spelling. What a terrible, awful, horrible, no good subject. Wait . . . no, I shouldn't say that should I? Spelling is a wonderful, beautiful subject!

Does spelling effect wither or not I will give your lens a blessing? Well, yes, and no. If the spelling is really bad, I won't be able to bless it. Than again, if it's bad enough for me to notice it's bad, than it's pretty bad, because I can't spell, and thus do not notice spelling errors when I see them. I guess I'll have to explain myself here.

Spelling. ick.

Spelling is my curse. I can't spell. My spelling problem is two-fold. For one thing I never learned how to spell properly in the first place, (most likely caused by my having Asperger's Syndrome) which results in me spelling phonetically the words I can't memorize from reading them in books.

Secondly, I have dyslexia, (the reason I was never able to learn to spell properly) and tend to spell about half the words I write in complete reverse, example, if I want to say cat, usually I write tac.

In my case even the best spell checker is unable to correct my spelling, because of the front to back spelling reversal. Spell checkers look at the first 2 letters and than guess at what you should have spelt. But when what should be the first 2 letters are now the last 2 letters, the spell checker totally has no idea what word you were saying.
It took me nearly three years to self program my MSWorks spell checker, but eventually I did get it programed to catch my odd misspellings and set them right, so today, most folks see what I type on my lenses and forum posts and they just assume I'm a pretty good speller, when in fact, all of my posts are first typed using FireFox (the browser auto spell checks) and than run through my customized MSWorks. A process that takes a bit of time, and results in me not answering as quickly as I might had I typed the forum post right into the reply box.

Even doing all this, a lot of misspelling still slip by, but at least you can actually read what I wrote. If my words had not been spell checked, you would be hard pressed to make heads or tails of them at all.

What does all this mean for my Squidoo lenses? It means that lenses that should take me 2 or 3 days to build, actually take me as long as 3 to 4 weeks to build, because once I have built the lens, I have to run it through a massive series of checks and rechecks, often 4 or 5 times, before I finally am able to catch all of the spelling errors. It's a long and tedious process, but it can be done, and as you can see, even with many mistakes still on about half of my lenses, I did become a Giant Squid, during their first round in September of 2007. (Spelling is one of the criteria of becoming a Giant Squid.) And am now a Squid Angel (spelling being a requirement for that as well.) I am living proof that if you work hard enough, you can succeed at the impossible and overcome anything life throws at you. I still can't spell, and I'm probably the only Giant Squid or Squid Angel, suffering from an extreme lack of spelling ability, but I didn't let that stop me and I found a way to get around it and become a Giant Squid and a Squid Angel anyways.

There was a time when I was constantly fretting over my spelling, and I tied like hell to learn to spell properly, but after years of trying every spelling program under the sun, and wasting money and stressing myself out over it, finally, I just said to hell with it, this is just the way my mind is going to spell words wither I like it or not, andI'm going to have to learn to live with it and deal with it. The fact is, I'm an author, and an author who has to constantly rely on an editor to help you with little basics like spelling, really becomes a burden all around. I knew I had to make an effort to change this, and if I couldn't change how I spelt things, than I was just going to have to find a way to correct the miss spellings after I'd written them. Once I had accepted the fact that this was a disability that I could not change, I was able to move past it and find ways to work around it and not let it get in the way of my life anymore. This wasn't something I overcame over night though, it took many many years and a whole lot of patience. Now, there are few people who look at my words who could guess that I had dyslexia, most just assume that the few misspellings they see are minor typos, caused by typing too fast and missing a few keys!

For other lensmasters with similar spelling difficulties, I suggest you change your browser to FireFox, as that'll catch most all of your mistakes, as you type. And if you have a lot of words that the normal spell checker misses, than use MSWorks and add those custom words into the spell checker, so that it does catch them.

Well, long story short, I am going to have to leave it up to the rest of Squidoo's Angel troupe, to judge your lens based on spelling. Sorry. Spelling will effect your getting blessed, though if spelling is all that is wrong with your lens, it won't get dinged, at least not by me, seeing how I know from personal experience the agony of trying to spell properly and still getting words messed up.

QUESTION: You're the creator of the "Big Lens". Do I have to have a "Big Lens" to get a blessing?

ANGEL BABIES TINIER TOT TRIOA "Big Lens" officially is any lens with 20 or more modules on it (not including intro and guest book). A "Huge Lens" has more than 50 modules, and a "Mega-Big Lens" has over 100 modules on it.

Yes, I like big, huge, and mega-big lenses. No, you don't have to use 300 modules on a single lens like I do (and yes, I do have 7 lenses each with more than 300 modules on them, though most of my lenses only have 75 or 80 modules each.) I was the creator of the so-called "Big Lens" and nearly every "Big Lens" out there was built by me, so, yeah, the bigger the lens the better I'll like, but no, that's not going to effect wither or not your lens gets a blessing.

As long as it has good, well thought out, and relevant content, the size of your lens will not effect it's chances of getting blessed.

QUESTION: Does donating to charity improve my chances of getting blessed?

Meadowbright, The Fairy Of The Sun Collectible Fairy Figurine
Nope, at least not by me. Each angel has their own personal criteria so others may answer differently. I don't personally care if you keep the money or give it away. It's not my money, so it's not my worry.

I do like to see the donation modules on lenses, but having them will not increase your changes of getting blessed, nor will not having them decrease your chances. In any case, I recommend you add them, just because it's the right thing to do, and you'll be helping someone else. There are about 100 different charities and fund raisers to choose from, everything from medical research, to children's funds, to animal shelters, to arts programs to environmentalists, to political campaigns. There's bound to be a charity to match your lens topic and if there isn't, well you can just add your favorite charity at the bottom of your lens anyways.

These are donation modules btw, in case you don't know what they look like:

An Angel's Blessing

Okay, I sent you a blessing request. Now what?

Angel with Lute
Think of me and your lens, like Mr. Owl and Tootsie-Pops: How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie-Roll center of a Tootsie-Roll Toostie-Pop?

The World May Never Know!

Now what? Now you just go on with your life. I'm probably not going to tell you if I blessed your lens or not. The only time I would tell you, is if I was leaving a comment anyways, I may (though may not) add a note to the bottom saying I had Blessed your lens while I was there.

But, what actually happens while I'm there at your lens? Oh, a lot of things. I'm not your average fly by sight-seer. Heck, I'm not your average anything, why should my Squidoo habits be any different?

What happens when I find a lens to Bless:

First I have to find the lens . . .

Kexy Friend of Fairies I find lenses to Bless in many ways, of which your request is only one. I find them most often through FaceBook, and second most often through the "Explore Related Lenses" feature on my own lenses. Of course there are the Top 100 lists on Squidoo, Squidoo's search box, and the SquidU Forum. I also find several lenses via Twitter, TagFoot, and Ning.

And of course, being an Angel means I have access to lists that are only accessible by Angels. When you create a lens, I know about it without you telling me or anyone else. That's why they call us Angels! We are watching, and we know when a new lens is made.

Okay, so I've found a lens. I may consider Blessing it, but first, I want to find out more about the guy/gal who wrote it. I haven't yet looked at the lens in question, instead, I have clicked on their bio and headed to their Lensmaster Profile . . .

Who are you and why should I read your lenses?

Angels Playing ViolinThe first thing I notice is your picture, and wither or not you've loaded one. If there is no picture in your profile (all I see is an orange squid), that's the end of it right there. I close the page and head off to find another lens to bless.

You've uploaded a picture. Good. Now I'm reading your bio, and it better not still say: "Hello world, this is my profile, I can edit it later!". It doesn't have to be fancy, but it should at least tell me in a few sentences who you are and why you are here.

So you've got a picture and bio, now I'm looking at the sidebar. Where is your lensography? Why haven't you made one yet? If you did make one, why isn't it in the slot Squidoo provide for you to put it in? The Heliotrope Fairy While a lensography isn't required for me to bless your lenses, not having one, will reduce your chances of me moving on to check out other lenses by you, as I prefer to browse lenses off your lensography, rather than off your lensmaster profile list. Your lensography shows me wither or not you have added a into picture and introduction to your lens, the lensmaster list does not. I don't like randomly clicking a lens based on the title, and than open it only to find that you didn't bother to add a picture or intro to it.

A note here: ALL lenses lacking a intro picture and/or introduction are automatically regarded, by me, as a WIP (Work In Progress) lens. Because WIPs are unfinished lenses which are still under construction, I can not bless them (and no, I won't ding a lens viewed as a WIP.)

What lenses do you recommend?

Angel WingsI'm still on your lensmaster profile page and still looking at the side bar. Haven't gotten to your lens yet. Still reading that pesky little sidebar (provided you filled it out at all!) Why? Because if I'm going to click any of the links on your lensmaster profile pages, these are it.

Those links which you carefully thought out and placed there, are the ones I'm going to be clicking on. I want to see your "Hero Lens" and find out who your hero is and why, and who knows, your hero may just be deserving of a blessing while I'm there. I want to read the lens that made you laugh to see if it can make me laugh too, because I find almost nothing funny at all, and if there is a lens out there that can make me actually laugh, it deserves a blessing. I want to know which lens it is you want to be "Lens of the Day" really bad, because who knows, I might think it would make a great lens of the day and tell other Squids. Do you see the importance of filling in all those slots in your sidebar?

Field of DreamsNot having those slots filled in, means, that you missed out on a chance that I might have wanted to bless one of those lenses but didn't because they were not there where I could find them. Likewise, you are also given 5 slots in which to feature any lens you like, and I do click on all 5 of them, provided you put them there.

The Power of Networking . . .

The Guardian AngelI haven't gotten to your lens yet. Yep, I know. Your are in a hurry for me to bless your lens and it seems like you sent me that blessing request ages ago now. But, I'm still on your lensmaster page. Haven't looked at your lens yet. Still looking at your sidebar.

There's a lot more than just lens slots in your sidebar. There are also slots for your Faceook, MySpace, Twitter, CafePress, Zazzle, Blogger, Lulu, and other profiles. I've got accounts with all of them, so if you've added your information to the sidebar, you'll be seeing friend requests from me.

Once you are on my friends list on FaceBook, you'll find me visiting your lenses quite regular as this is the #1 place where I find new lenses to check out. I love the Squidoo/FaceBook Connect app, and I am daily checking my NewsFeed in search of new and recently updated lenses.

Your lens as seen through the eyes of a fashion designer . . .

Jester in Cap and BellsOnce I've finished sending friend requests, now I head to all those lens links I clicked on from your sidebar, and if you filled them all in, I should now have about a dozen tabs open in FireFox.

My first step is to do a once over scan of the lens from top to bottom to see if it has eye-appeal.

I'm trained as a fashion designer, so when I look at anything, I look at is to see how it looks from all angles. Is it balanced? Is it color coordinated? Is there a prime color, a secondary color and an accent color? Do the colors match across the scale? Are they in season? Do the lines flow smoothly from top to bottom? Are there any harsh object that look out of place? Is it fashionable? Would it sell in France? Oh my yes, those are the questions I'm asking as I look at your lens, because those are the questions fashion designers ask about everything they look at. We can't help it. We are trained to ask questions like that, and it becomes a habit after a while.

Don't worry, this doesn't mean that I'm looking so much for fancy html tricks, as much as it means I'm looking for stuff that is out of place: I'm looking for default titles still on modules, items that stick out like a sore thumb because they are not on topic to your subject, and a lack of images in text and intro modules.

. . . your lens as seen by an author . . .

Brian Froud - DreamweaverOkay, now it's time for me to actually read what you wrote. You did write something didn't you? I prefer lenses where the lensmaster wrote something.

I'm an author. Offline I write fiction, mostly in the fantasy-sci-fi-horror realms. Online I write non-fiction articles, mostly to do with how to write fiction, how to sew, how to create costumes, how to read comic books (yes there is a right way and a wrong way to read comic books!) or reviews of my fave movies/actors/etc. For my fiction and my non-fiction writing I get paid, however, my writing does not stop there.

I write, because I love to write. I love the act of creating words. A large majority of the things I write, I don't get paid to write. I am what is known as a "renegade writer", I'm most famous for starting a movement which eventually reached global proportions and would become known as "The P&G Boycott". I was 12 years old when I wrote my first angry letter to mega giant cooperation Proctor and Gamble, and in the 20+ years since, I've written thousands of letters of protests to hundreds of others like them.

And I actually write too, not type. All of those long (12 or 13 pages, double sided) letters, were all hand written. I go through about 20 pens per month, and buy paper by the case. Writing is very important to me. It is very important that you realize, just how very important writing is in my life.

Long story short: I write A LOT! Every spare second of my life is devoted to writing. So, when I found Squidoo, my first thought was: "Hey, a place where I can do even more writing! Cool!".

Brian Froud - GwenhwyfarWhat this means for you, is that now, FINALLY, after everything else is out of the way, I've gotten to the point where I am actually reading your lens. Note the word "READING". That one little word is going to have the biggest impact on my decision to bless a lens. I don't care what your topic is. I don't care if you are for or against. I don't car if it's a topic I like or a topic I hate. What I do care about is that you took the time to think about your subject and than sat down and wrote about it and shared your views about it with the world.

That is the #1 thing I look for when I look at any lens. It is what determines wither I give it 3 stars, 4 stars, or 5 stars. (Note that I never use the 1 star and 2 star options). And now, it is this same criteria that I'll being using to Bless lenses as well. I want to know what you have to say.

Wait, What about star ratings? Do I get those too?

Sleeping BeautyOf course! I've been on Squidoo for 2 years now, and I rate every lens I land on. Always have, always will. So, even if I don't bless your lens, I will be rating it, so either way you are getting a boost on some level. I know Squidoo tells you on each lens what each star means, but somehow I interpret the star rating system somewhat differently.

Here's how I do it:

I don't use the 1 star and 2 star slots at all, so you won't be getting any of those from me. And I always refresh the page after leaving a star rate, to make sure that the imfamous "one-star-bug" doesn't change my rate to a one star instead.

WIP, Lens Under Construction Lens, or lenses which I view as being such, will not get a star rate at all, because I will come back to it in a few weeks to see if you've finished with it. I know what it's like to be in the middle of building a 5 star lens, publish it too early, and than get a low rate on it, because it wasn't finished yet. It's happened to me, so I don't do it to anyone else. So, don't worry if your lens it still WIP, because I'll come back to it later and rate it once it's finished.

Faerie GuardiansI give 3 star rates to lenses which I liked, but thought to be rather skimpy.

I also give a 3 star rate to lenses I liked, but which do not have a comment box on and/or was lacking an intro picture.

! give a 4 star rate to really good lenses. i.e. lenses I like, that are of the average to really good level, but not good enough to rank 5 stars.

I give 5 stars to the really outstanding lenses. Lenses which you can tell the lensmaster invested a lot of time and effort into. I especially look for lenses where the lensmaster wrote a lot of words about the topic in question. I also look for lenses that made use of html codes in an eye pleasing way. (Go back and take a closer look at this lens you are reading, for an example of what I give 5 star rates to.)

I will favorite any lens about a topic that is a favorite topic of mine, regardless of the star rating. For example it is possible that I gave it 3 stars or no stars at all, but I still favorited it, due to my love of the topic in question.

I will lensroll lenses that I have favorited, providing I also have a lens on the same or related topic.

If I really like a lens a lot, I will ad it as a featured lens on one of my lenses, and may also send links to it out via Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, and/or TagFoot. In some rare instances I have also written blog reviews about lenses which really made me stop and think about something meaningful.

My mom and three brothers are all also Squidoo members, and whenever I find a lens on a topic I know they'd like, I email the lens link to them.

Fairy Land
And there you have it! That's how I have spent the past two years rating lenses, and how I shall continue to rate lenses.

Of the lenses I rate, each day I will choose a few of them, which are the best lenses I found that day, and those shall receive a blessing on top of the star rating, faves, and recommendations.

I make it my goal to bless at least one lens every day, more if possible, probably a lot more, actually. I blessed more than 30 lenses my first day as an Angel! There's a lot of good lenses out there. I can see me blessing a bunch of them.

What are the chances of my lens getting blessed?

The Fairy's Fairy
Pretty good, actually. I know, maybe this lens I'm writing makes it sound like I'm pretty strict about giving out blessings, but actually, I'm not.

I've already started blessing lenses, and I'd say I'm blessing about 3 out of every 10 that crosses my path, more or less, so, yeah, your chances of getting a blessing are pretty good.

And don't worry. If I didn't bless you lens this time, just keep updating it, and who knows, I may bless it tomorrow! I'm a repeat visitor at most lenses I visit, so once I've found it, I'll probably be back in a week or so. I like looking for changes and updates.

How do I know if my lens was blessed?

Fiona FloretUhm . . . you don't, unless of course I left a comment saying I did, which more often than not, is not going to happen, as I don't leave comments very often. I'm just not too big on talking and me leaving comments is like me talking.

However, I am building a set of lenses (one for each month of my winged existence) which will be listing the lenses I've blessed that month, on it. How many lenses I make for this set will depend on how long I remain an Angel. How many lenses listed on each, will depend on how many I've blessed. Where can you find these lenses to see if one of your lenses got blessed? Well, right here:

I demand to know why the hell my lens wasn't blessed! You better tell me right now or else, because I know where you live . . .

YIKES!

MilleniumNow, 99.9% of all members on Squidoo won't need to read this part, but as I have seen a few, shall we call them "rude" comments, being directed at angels in the past, which resulted in my feeling the need to write this extra section.

Now I may not post on the SquidU forums regular, and only leave replies when I feel I have something to add to the conversation, but I do spend a lot of time on the forum itself, just scrolling down through the list of threads and reading what folks are saying, and checking out the new lenses being posted.

In my travels across the forum, I discovered something. Did you know some people get really pissed off after they make a lens, demand a blessing, and then don't get it? It may not happen often, but it does happen, and I've seen it happen right on the SquidU Angel Forum!

Amount of rudeness does effect your getting blessed, and if you start acting like a troll, a flamer, or an online stalker you may not only not get a blessing, but you may also get a ding, and a report sent in to headquarters, and could end up losing your account! So, sit down, calm down, relax, breath deeply, count to 20, and than take a nice long walk and get some fresh air for a while. Just because you didn't get an Blessing does not mean it's the end of the world, and there is no reason for you to get upset over it, because guess what: 75% of all lenses on Squidoo are never going to get an Angel Blessing!

Remember: Angels are people just like you and they have feelings and emotions that can be hurt. Being rude is never the way to make a friend, and it's certainly not the way to ask for a blessing.

Know this: Every Angel is different. Every Angel has their own personal criteria. What one Angel calls worthy of being blessed, another Angel may very well ding as spam! Each Blessing is subjective based on what the individual Angel considers to be "The Best." Because every person likes different things, every Angel is going to have a different perception about how to define what lenses are "The Best".

Don't Forget: Just because it wasn't Blessed today, doesn't mean it won't be blessed next week. So, keep editing, updating, and improving your lens while you wait. Maybe it wasn't good enough to be Blessed today, but the Angel may return next week and see the improvements you made and thus change their mind and Bless it.

Angels are people too! They have jobs and families and pets and bills and doctor visits just like you do. It could be that the Angel just hasn't had time to look at requests and WOULD have Blessed your lens, once they read their requests. Some Angels look to Bless lenses every day, some once a week. A sudden unexpected family emergency, could put them offline for 2 or 3 weeks. Be patient. It's possible your lens wasn't blessed yet, because they Angel didn't look at it yet.

Keep in mind: There are 800,000 lenses on Squidoo and only 32 Angels. Each Angel is probably only going to bless a few lesses a week, and probably not every day, meaning they'll only bless a few hundred lenses AT MOST during their entire time as an Angel!

One last thought: Only the absolute best of the best, ever get a blessing! Shocking? It shouldn't be. Just because you requested a blessing does not mean you are going to get one. All any Angel can guarantee is that they will stop by and have a look at your lens.

So if you requested a blessing from any of the Angels, but didn't get a blessing, know that you are up against a lot of stiff compatition, and that of 800,000 lenses on a few hundred will ever get blessed!

P.S.

Before you start throwing temper tantrums you might want to read what ChefKeem had to say about this:

I'd call you an angel even if you hadn't been named a Squid Angel, just from your wonderful writing. Thanks for all the great information, and a special thank you for the list of 32 Squidoo categories. This 'newbie' has been searching for this info for days -- and here it is in perfect list form.! I only have one lens so far (http://www.squidoo.com/Mountainside-Crochet), but have several more planned and I REALLY needed to learn the categories so I'd know where to put each lens. Now if I could just get down the basics of HTML and which module does what, I'll be good to go. But I'm certainly enjoying the journey. Now off to read more lenses and learn more. A definite 5*.
