Fair Haven PeaceJam
The aim of this lens is to draw attention to the teenage youth group, Fair Haven PeaceJam.
I've linked a web page with a story about the group, as well the link for the PeaceJam website to the bottom of this page. Please view these links for further information.
Thanks for looking. Hopefully you'll feel a little more interested in making a difference in your area after reading this.
Just remember the old proverb:

When will you take YOUR first step?
Fair Haven PeaceJam
About us
Fair Haven PeaceJam is a teenage youth group made up of teenagers from all over the state of CT. The group was founded in April 2006.
PeaceJam is an international education program built around leading Nobel Peace Laureates who work personally with youth to pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. The goal of PeaceJam is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves and the world. PeaceJam and it's founders were recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Mairead Corrigan-McGuire.
Why We Do What We Do
The leading Nobel Laureates worked together to send out a Global call to action. Our response to that is a four element "PeacePlan".
Our PeacePlan
Our response is a four element PeacePlan, in order of tangibility:
PeaceJam Monthly Movie Night
~Some of the past movies that we have shown are, An Inconvenient Truth, Kilowatt Ours, Who Killed the Electric Car, Power from the People and, most recently Out Of Balance.
PeaceJam Light Bulb Exchange
Our plan is as follows:
~Step 1: With owners' consent, we will assess a home, room by room, and determine: the quantity, wattage and type (dimmable, non-dimmable, etc.) of incandescent light bulbs.
~Step 2: We will return to the house in a timely manner- one to two weeks- and replace the incandescent lights with the corresponding compact fluorescent bulbs.
~Step 3: We will compare electric bills-kWh used- from the month prior to, the month of, the month after, and the one year anniversary of the Exchange. The purpose is to compare energy use, and, in the case of the one anniversary, to see if, by dropping their electric bill almost immediately, we made the homeowners more aware which led to them lowering their usage even further.
~We have met with representatives from the UI (United Illuminating), the energy supplier in southern CT, and they offered their support.
~We also have the support from the Mayor of New Haven, John DeStefano, Jr.
PeaceJam Plastic Bag Campaign
Our plan is to reduce plastic bag pollution/use by convincing local supermarkets to:
~charge a small fee for plastic bags and/or
~offer incentives to people who bring their own bags.
Environmental Billboard Campaign
~Our plan is to cover a current billboard on the interstate in our area that inappropriately advertises adult novelty stores. Our own billboard would raise awareness about one's CO2 footprint and the consequence should we fail to change our consumption rates.
Mission
Our mission is to raise awareness about the carbon footprint we leave on our planet, our environment and the impact of this on future generations.
A blurb about our Light Bulb Exchange, which we kicked on Friday, February 8th, 2008:
The PeaceJam Light Bulb Exchange is a means for our group to raise awareness about energy consumption, by replacing inefficient Incandescent light bulbs with Compact Fluorescents which, -aside from producing the same amount of lumens- use up to one quarter of the corresponding Incandescent.
The process starts with the homeowner signing up to have their house assessed, room by room to determine: the quantity, wattage and type (dimmable, non-dimmable, etc.) of incandescent light bulbs, in their home.
We will then return to the house within one to two weeks, and replace the incandescent lights with the equivalent fluorescent bulbs.
In return, we ask that homeowner present to us, (as a minimum) their energy usage from the month prior to, the month of and -once made available- the month after the exchange. In addition, at the one-year anniversary, our plan is to use the energy bill from that month to see if by raising awareness, they were able to lower their bill further.
On average, up to 40% of one's energy bill goes to lighting. By installing CFLs there is the potential to save up to 30% off of one's electricity bill each month.
As energy costs continue to rise, the savings will prove invaluable.
