Fancy Nancy: Imagination and Dressing Up

Do you have a Fancy Nancy in your house? A Fancy Nancy likes sparkles and glitter, lace and tulle. No amount of jewelry is too much. Tutus, boas, and satin are the latest fashion and she will wear them anywhere.

Fancy Nancy is not just for little girls. I find that boys also like to dress-up as well. Give them a cape or a hat and watch their imaginations come alive. Older children, adults and even grandparents often like to dress-up.

Dressing-Up is a way to try out another culture, Time Period, Occupation, persona. Schools and society in general want to make children conform but we are no longer are living in a country that needs to prepare our children to work in factories. Children need an entrepreneurial spirit that can best be encouraged the by uniqueness expressed in the book Fancy Nancy.

So get rid of the school uniforms and pull out the boas. Fancy Nancy is here...

Fancy Nancy is Here!

Fancy Nancy

Jane O'Connor, the author of the Fancy Nancy series tells us the story of a little girl who loves to be fancy. This little girl loves soccer and believes that soccer can be fancy too. She wears fancy lace-trimmed sneakers because they help her to play better.

Fancy Nancy prefers sandwiches with fancy, frilly toothpicks. Fancy sandwiches taste better. Her fancy style finally catches on with her family when they go out for a fancy meal.

The love the family shows for each other demonstrates the way they embrace the uniqueness in Nancy and allow the flamboyant in each of them to pop out for the evening.

Children who make up plots and characters through role-play not only smile more, but are engaged in activities that build a stronger sense of self-confidence. Child development experts agree that dress-up play not only stimulates imagination, but it can also be tracked to improved vocabulary and social skills.

Renaissance CostumeResearch shows that children who engage in this type of imaginative, open-ended play are more creative thinkers who eventually mature into better problem solvers.

DressupWhen my children were growing up they often dressed in costumes that represented the plots of stories that I had read to them. Some days they would be Knights in Shining Armor, Mr. Popper with his Penguins, Princess and the Pea or Ballinerinas. Dressing-up is a boundless avenue to imagination, learning and growth.

playing dress upAs homeschoolers my children often dressed as the characters they were learning about. They dressed as Ancient Egyptians, Paul Revere and Garner Rix. As we learned about lemmings, woodchucks and river otters we make costumes to gain a better understanding of the lives of these animals. When we studied bluebirds and Purple Gallinules we made wings and tried to fly. By dressing-up as the character that they were learning about they were able to more fully understand the lives of those characters.

Harry Potter CostumeRole-play helps teach children about cooperation and taking turns, and as a result it encourages confidence and socialization. Research also tells us that children who are encouraged in their imaginative play prove to be more creative, have a richer vocabulary, are less impulsive and aggressive and often become leaders amongst their playmates.

Fairy CostumeRole-play is exactly the type of imaginative play that child development experts recognize as preparation for learning and preparation for the rest of their lives.

My Fancy Nancy just went off to college. I am so proud of her. She thrived as an unschooler for her entire elementary school experience and survived private and public schools for High School. Uniforms were one of the hardest things to deal with.

It took hours to figure out the right kind of earrings, hair style, socks and decorated notebooks in order to highlight her uniqueness. When she attended schools without a uniform she confidently took just minutes to find an outfit that fit her mood.

She now goes off to college to major in costume design through mechanical engineering...

Look for boas, prom dresses, and frilly curtains. Marti Gras bead and other jewelry, gems and hot glue add to the fancy fun. When I look for items I look for material, color and sparkle rather than particular items.

Use gold spray paint and cardboard to make crowns and hot glue on some gems.

Fancy Nancy and School Uniforms

Ideally, schools are places that foster each student's individuality of interest, learning style, and ambition.

Children should be allowed and encouraged to express their individuality in school as well as the larger society.

Forbidding children to express themselves through clothing and hairstyles prevents a healthy transition to independence and freedom from their parents and other adults.

The stylish, personalized clothing children choose allow them to assert their uniqueness and power in a world controlled by adults. We should understand and appreciate these developmental needs.

How do you feel about School Uniforms?

Loading

Students come prepared to learn when they're dressed to learn.

darciefrench says:

I agree with uniforms for high school students, mainly because of blossoming hormones - and the urge to show off newly developed assets.

Retro_Loco says:

I have a confession! When I was in school, nobody wore uniforms except at the private schools, and I envied them!! I thought the little plaid skirts were adorable, and I wanted to wear a uniform. I think wearing uniforms to school will help teach kids discipline and keep their minds on their studies more instead of concentrating on who has the best duds & latest fashion. I remember some kids from VERY poor families who obviously wore hand-me-downs (their clothes were WAY too big) and couldn't afford a belt, so they wore a rope around their waist. Some of these kids had the shabbiest shoes or no shoes at all, and they really stood out from the other kids. I felt so sorry for them. I remember in the first grade seeing kids in the winter with no coat & no shoes. Uniforms cost money, too, but wearing uniforms helps create a sense of equality among children. Besides, kids look cute in uniforms! ;-)

Momsbusy247 says:

Being a teacher in a low income area with a lot of gang activity. I am all for school uniforms, keeps the affiliation with gangs to a minimal and makes the low income children feel equal to the other kids because they have the same exact clothing as the other kids. Everyone is on equal terms.

scar4 says:

I prefer to wear school uniforms for they are more durable and comfortable.

DeboraR says:

I think the school uniforms are a good idea. It causes the children to focus more on their school work having a dress code. It also cuts back on children judging each other by fashion instead of who they are as individuals. Should also keep 'clicks' from being an issue. I think there is plenty of time/space outside of the classroom for kids to develop their own sense of style.

Home-Interior-Designer says:

I like the sense of belonging a school uniform gives to a child. It's important for a young girl or boy to feel associated with something bigger than them and this is what a school uniform provides. We are naturally prone to being in groups and associating ourselves with a 'clan'. Maybe I am biased coming from Britain where uniform is mandatory.

Iatjad says:

School uniforms allow children to identify with their school. Children in uniform are much more likely to behave well since they -- their uniform, I mean -- can be easily recognized and remembered. I'm not totally sold over the idea about getting "dressed to learn" but thought I'd post my comment here to balance things out :)

alteredkat says:

I wore one from Gr 9-12. We didn't like them at first but looking back now...it was sooo much easier in the mornings vs. deciding what to wear and it's definitely more cost effective than $100 designer jeans and sneakers...I'm familiar with both sides of the coin as grades 7&8 we were uniform free.

TheWhistler says:

Coming from Scotland I wore a school uniform to I don't know how many schools. Frankly on moving to Canada I missed wearing a uniform. You tend to feel you stand out more. Uniforms seem to put you on an equal basis. That said, if you are wearing a uniform one should not be slovenly in appearance, take pride in the uniform.

says:

Wearing school uniforms helps break down the economic class system that kids judge each other by. Personally speaking, I came from a family with a single parent and it was a huge blow to my self-esteem that I could never afford the fancy brand names the other kids had...and believe me, they never got tired of reminding me about it. I honestly feel living under the stigma of "poor kid" hurt my development and uniforms would have leveled the playing ground. Children should be allowed to develop their own sense of style, but school isn't the best place to do it.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

As a teacher I would love to see the kids in uniform. It would cut down a lot of hassles.

aj2008 says:

Wearing a uniform gives students a sense of belonging to a community, which in this case is their school. There is too much unhealthy competition between children as it is regarding material possessions, let alone allowing them to wear what they like to school. Uniform encourages equality - no competition as to who is the first to wear the latest designer fad. It also takes pressure off parents, particularly those who are less well off.

I am all for children learning to develop their own individual stlye of dressing but school is not the place to do it. In the UK most schools allow students to wear what they like once they get to 16, which is fair enough.

Don't get me wrong - competition is healthy, but lets keep it in the right context.

poddys says:

I think mostly that students ought to look like they belong to a group and wear uniform, rather than being allowed to dress as they please.
Especially as children get older, if they are allowed to wear their own choice of clothing to school then not only do they all try to outdo each other with what they are wearing, but girls are going to end up dressing like tramps and boys are going to wear their pant with the crotch down around their knees - or something like that...
I think that there can be special days for not wearing uniform, but as a rule uniform is a good thing.

rwoman says:

I don't have a problem with dress codes but don't see any real benefit with uniforms. Just another one of those fads they grab onto rather than addressing the real issues. I do know at the elementary level they are easily distracted by things like clothing and I can imagine this only increases when hormones kick in.

Students should be allowed to develop their own sense of style.

Ruthi says:

While I believe in dressing for success, I also believe in individuality. I feel both can be encouraged by a dress code rather than mandatory look-alike uniforms.

Ruthi says:

While I believe in dressing for success, I also believe in individuality. I feel both can be encouraged by a dress code rather than mandatory look-alike uniforms.

Jewelsofawe says:

I don't like school uniforms.

bgamall says:

I don't like them but I like the ones on this lens because they are more individualistic.

Herlinda says:

I agree that children, especially adolescents, should be able to express themselves through clothing and hair. It does allow them to assert their uniqueness. That being said, when you live in an urban metropolis such as Los Angeles, some styles may cross over into dangerous territory. Some styles will immediately be indentified as affiliated with a gang. This is the main reason most of the schools in Los Angeles resorted to a school uniform, to eliminate the identification with gangs and ultimately eliminate violence. For these children, it is even more important that they are allowed to express themselves outside of the restrictions of school.

zazaodh says:

Too often are we told to conform. School is as much about expression as it is learning. Expression of thought, language, music... why not dress?

lakeerieartists says:

I have to admit that I don't like the idea of school uniforms. I am pretty much a freedom of expression person. However, I can see where in some areas where clothing is a significant problem because of gang affiliations and such that it would be a benefit.

Mortira says:

School uniforms help to encourage negative body image in girls and in boys by preventing kids and teens from dressing in a way that is comfortable for them.

tandemonimom says:

Well, my kids are homeschooled, so does it count as a uniform if they're all still in pajamas for lunch? ;-)

TeaPartyTreasures says:

I understand both sides of the argument. While I believe in allowing children some lee-way with their choice of clothing, I can also understand parents who cannot afford to keep up with the latest high priced tennis shoes, etc. that this would help. It does help students stop emphasizing materialism and focus on their school work...but being a grownup Fancy Nancy and owner of Tea Party Treaures dress up boutique, I would be remiss if I didn't endorse a little sparkle here and there!

says:

I think that allowed kids to dress up in anyway they want helps develop their creative skills and show off their unique personalities. The schools should have just a few common sense rules (no going to school in underwear or too revealing clothes, etc) instead of full-blown school uniforms with jackets, socks, shoes, etc, etc, etc. :)

WhitePineLane says:

I say kids should be encouraged to find their own individual styles, and they will undoubtedly experiment with many different styles as they mature and grow into their own. It's a part of growing up.

Although I have to say: I do love your idea for school uniforms (above)! ;-)

JJNW says:

Homeschooled kids never need uniforms because they act independently! This leads to thinking outside the box from day one and they just don't bug each other about clothing. Homeschoolers, in general, delight in seeing each other be themselves. Hurray for REALLY thinking! And hurray for imagination!

Tiddledeewinks says:

I'd hate a uniform where everyone looks the same as everyone else! YUK! Concentration camp? I go for individual style, as long as it is in good taste.

EelKat says:

I'm not really in favor of school uniforms, of course I'm not so much in favor of public schools either, I think home-school is a better way to go.

Anyways, I think children should be allowed a long leash of freedom when it comes to cloths, it helps them to develop a sense of bing an individual, helps them to be unique and improves their self worth.

I started sewing when I was 6 years old and moved on to sewing my own cloths by the time I was a teenager. I ended up moving on to study pattern making and fashion design, and now today I create re-enactment clothing and costumes, and have a goal of starting my own business doing such.

I think that if I had been in a school that required uniforms (I was home schooled btw) I would not have ended up the creative costumer that I am today. Being allow freedom of creative expression early on, lead to me being where I am today.

rms says:

I'm not for uniforms on children.

Fancy Nancy likes a lace table cloth with delicate china tea service and polished silver. Of course the tea should be fancy too with lemon and honey. What makes tea fancy for you?

One day I found an old lace table cloth at a yard sale. It was yellowed with age and had some stains on it. It was just the kind of fancy table cloth that I knew my children would like so I bought it.

We took that fancy old yellowed lace table cloth out back and had a great old time washing it and then hung it out to dry in the sun for several day. It's now clean enough for any Fancy Nancy and the kids learned about removing stains, living a green life and how to make the table fancier.

My students enjoy adding lots of fancy decoration to the cover and drawing fancy illustrations for each word they add to help them remember the meaning of the word.

This is a great activity to add to center time, for when children finish a group activity early or for IEP students to work on with a tutor. Sometimes children like to take them home to add words with their parents.

As will all their work it is important for the children to have time to share their finding and illustrations with the rest of the class.

Dress your Fancy Nancy in her favorite outfit and then help her imagination grow with Fancy Paper Dolls. My sister and I looked forward to going to our grandmother's house because she had paper dolls to cut out and play with. We changed their outfits, cut out more clothes, made up names for them and turned them into characters for stories.

We didn't have printed paper dolls at my other grandmother's house or at home, for that matter. Mom and Grammy helped us learn how to create our own paper dolls from grocery bags. Sometimes we would try to use pictures from Montgomery Wards or Sears Catalogs but these were not very satisfactory as they often had their legs cut off and stood in odd positions. We used sequins, lace and other fancy scraps from the rag bag to dress up our paper dolls.

Promote imagination in your Fancy Nancy with paper dolls.

We like dressing up so kids mus love this, too. Our two granddaughters always go over my clothes closet to try out whatever they fancy. It is always fun.

Love this lens! I'm a big fan of the Fancy Nancy books and have enjoyed reading them with my granddaughter. It has been fun seeing her vocabulary expand with her "fancy" words. The funniest thing we heard was her at four years old telling her daddy that he looked "dapper" when he tried on a new suit.

I love this lens. I have this girl. I often am baffled with how to handle her, as I am not a fancy mama. :)
