Fashions For Barbie

Hi, I'm Debbie and I love making clothes for vintage Barbies. The doll pictured is The 1962 Bubblecut Barbie 50th Anniversary reproduction from the My Favorite Barbie Series.

Some Barbie Trivia!

Barbie was first made in 1959, so she turned 50 on March 9, 2009. She was one of the first dolls with an adult shape made for little girls. Barbie's measurements are out of proportion to allow the small clothing to appear less bulky. This also explains why she looks great in any style! Her neck is twice as long as ours. Mattel hired fashion designers to design the outfits for Barbie. Barbie's full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts. Her hometown is Willows, Wisconsin and she went to Willows High School.

Barbie was loosely inspired by a german doll named Bild Lilly. Bild Lilly was a comic strip cartoon character with a bit of a gold digger reputation in postwar Germany. The Bild Lilly dolls were made for adults and had detailed sophisticated outfits. If you ever see a Bild Lilly doll you can see the resemblance. Barbie starred in some of the first tv commercials for toys in the early 1960's. The price for a Barbie doll in 1959 was $3.00! Outfits were priced from $1.00 for simple outfits to $5.00 for evening wear, wedding gowns, etc.

In 2010, Mattel released some new Barbie Vintage Repros, They are a blond ponytail wearing the Registered Nurse outfit, A brunette swirl ponytail wearing Student Teacher, a titian American Girl wearing a Pan Am Stewardess outfit, a blond American Girl wearing Miss Astronaut, a blond swirl ponytail wearing the Dancing Doll outfit, a Black Barbie Repro from 1980 with red gown and gold neckpiece, and a brunette American Girl wearing The Matinee outfit. This American Girl Repro looks to have flatter hair than the previous AG reproductions. Lastly, a Fashion Queen Barbie repro with the three wigs, blond, brunette and redhead.

Unfortunately in 2011, there were no vintage reproduction dolls released, but there are two silkstone Francie dolls.
