Lyrics and Tunes to Some Old Time Favorites

Here are some lyrics to great old time songs the ole folks used to listen to when they'd sing-a-long. When I sang karaoke songs at local nursing homes, some of the ole folks would sing along with me to old time tunes they knew like, "Down By the Riverside". It was a lot of fun. Maybe I'll go do that again! So listen to these old-timers and reminisce, or if you are of the younger generation, listen, perhaps for the first time to some great classics, and sing-a-long!

Beautiful Dreamer ~Lyrics

Beautiful Dreamer - Lyrics

By Stephen Foster

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,

Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee

Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,

Lulled by the moonlight have all passed away

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,

List while I woo thee with soft melody.

Gone are the cares of life's busy throng,

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me,

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me.

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea

Mermaids are chanting the wild Lorelei,

Over the streamlet vapors are borne

Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart

E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea,

Then will all clouds of sorrow depart.

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me

In the Good Old Summertime~Lyrics

In The Good Old Summertime
Music by George Evans
Words by Ren Shields
Published 1902 by Howley, Haviland & Dresser.
[Verse 1]
There's a time in each year that we always hold dear,
Good old summer time;
With the birds and the treeses and sweet scented breezes,
Good old summer time,
When your day's work is over then you are in clover,
and life is one beautiful rhyme,
No trouble annoying, each one is enjoying,
The good old summer time.
[Chorus]
In the good old summer time,
In the good old summer time,
Strolling thro' the shady lanes,
With your baby mine;
You hold her hand and she holds yours,
And that's a very good sign,
That she's your tootsey wootsey,
in The good old summer time.

[Verse 2]
To swim in the pool, you'd play "hooky" from school,
Good old summer time;
You'd play "ringarosie" with Jim,
Kate and Josie,
Good old summer time Those days full of pleasure
we now fondly treasure, when we never thought it a crime,
To go stealing cherries, with face brown as berries,
Good old summer time.

[Chorus]

Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me)~Lyrics

ARTIST: Glenn Miller
TITLE: Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree
Lyrics

Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me, no, no, no
Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
'Til I come marchin' home

Don't go walkin' down Lovers' Lane with anyone else but me
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me, no, no, no
Don't go walkin' down Lovers' Lane with anyone else but me
'Til I come marchin' home

I just got word from a guy who heard
From the guy next door to me
The girl he met just loves to pet
And it fits you to a T
So, don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
'Til I come marchin' home

Don't give out with those lips of yours to anyone else but me
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me, no, no, no
Watch those girls on foreign shores, you'll have to report to me
When you come marchin' home

Don't hold anyone on your knee, you better be true to me
You better be true to me, you better be true to me
Don't hold anyone on your knee, you're gettin' the third degree
When you come marchin' home

You're on your own where there is no phone
And I can't keep tabs on you
Be fair to me, I'll guarantee
This is one thing that I'll do
I won't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but you
'Til you come marchin' home

Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
I know the apple tree is reserved for you and me
And I'll be true 'til you come marchin' home

Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built For Two)~Lyrics

by Harry Dacre, 1892
Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built For Two)

There is a flower
Within my heart,
Daisy, Daisy!
Planted one day
By a glancing dart,
Planted by Daisy Bell!
Whether she loves me
Or loves me not,
Sometimes it's hard to tell;
Yet I am longing to share the lot -
Of beautiful Daisy Bell!

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle made for two.

We will go 'tandem'
As man and wife,
Daisy, Daisy!
'Peddling' away
Down the road of life,
I and my Daisy Bell!
When the road's dark
We can both despise
P'licemen and 'lamps' as well;
There are 'bright lights'
In the dazzling eyes
Of beautiful Daisy Bell!

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle made for two.

I will stand by you
In 'weal' or woe,
["weal" means prosperity] Daisy, Daisy!
You'll be the bell(e)
Which I'll ring you know!
Sweet little Daisy Bell!
You'll take the 'lead'
In each 'trip' we take,
Then if I don't do well,
I will permit you to
Use the brake,
My beautiful Daisy Bell!

You Are My Sunshine~Lyrics

You Are My Sunshine

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms,
but when I woke dear, I was mistaken,
and I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy when skies are gray
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always love you and make you happy
if you will only say the same
but if you leave me to love another
you'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy, when skies are gray,
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

You told me once dear you really loved me
that no one else could come between
but now you've left me and love another
you have shattered all my dreams.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy, when skies are gray,
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

My Grandfathers Clock~Lyrics

Henry Clay Work wrote many folk songs. My Grandfather's Clock was one of his most successful ones. It was written in 1876 when it was one of the most popular songs in America. James P. Christian owned the old Grandfather Clock which inspired C. Russel Christian to write the famous poem by that name. From this date forward these tall case clocks or long case clocks have been known as grandfather clocks.
---------------------------------------------------
My Grandfathers Clock

My grandfather's clock was to large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride.
But it stopp'd short, Never to go again,
When the old man died..

Chorus
Ninety years without slumbering
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock
It stopp'd short, Never to go again
When the old man died.

In watching its pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know,
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four when he entered the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride.
But it stopp'd short, Never to go again,
When the old man died..

Chorus
Ninety years without slumbering
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock
It stopp'd short, Never to go again
When the old man died.

My grandfather said, that of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found:
For it wasted no time, and had but one desire,
At the close of each week to be wound.
And it kept in its place, not a frown upon its face,
And its hands never hung by its side;
But it stopp'd short, Never to go again,
When the old man died..

Chorus
Ninety years without slumbering
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock
It stopp'd short, Never to go again
When the old man died.

It rang an alarm in the dead of the night,
And alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we know that his spirit was pluming its flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time, with a soft muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side;
But it stopp'd short, Never to go again,
When the old man died..

The Old Lamplighter~Lyrics

The Old Lamplighter

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would hide a lonely heart you see

If there were sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be

For he recalled when things were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him alone in memories

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

(Instrumental Break)

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

Now if you look up in the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all aglow

He turns them on when night is here
He turns them off when dawn is near
The little man we left so long ago

While Strolling Through the Park One Day~Lyrics

Strolling Through The Park One Day
Music and Lyrics Ed Haley

(Refrain)
While strolling through the park one day
In the merry merry month of May
I was taken by surprise
By a pair of roguish eyes
In a moment my poor heart was stole away

A smile was all she gave to me

Of course we were as happy as can be

Ah! I immediately raised my hat
And finally she remarked
I never shall forget
That lovely afternoon
I met her at the fountain in the park

While strolling through the park one day
In the merry merry month of May
I was taken by surprise
By a pair of roguish eyes
In a moment my poor heart was stole away

A smile was all she gave to me
Of course we are as happy as can be
Ah! I immediately raised my hat
And finally she remarked
I never shall forget

Walking My Baby Back Home~Lyrics

Walking My Baby Back Home

Gee, but its great after bein out late
Walkin my baby back home
Arm in arm over meadow and farm
Walkin my baby back home

We go along harmonizing a song
Or I'm recitin a poem
Owls go by and they give me us eye
Walkin my baby back home

We stop for a while, he gives me a smile
I snuggle my head on my chest
We start in to pet and thats when I get
My talcum powder all over my vest

After I kinda straighten my tie
She has to borrow my comb
Once kiss then I continue again
Walkin my baby back home

Then we stop for awhile, cause we're happy I guess
We walk back for a mile
Oo that boy is a mess

After I kinda straighten my tie
He borrows my comb
Once kiss then I continue again
Walkin my baby back home
Hear me talkin
We call it walkin
Walkin my baby back home

In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree~Lyrics

IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD APPLE TREE
Egbert "Bert" Anson Van Alstyne

4-Bar Intro

Verse 1

THE O-RI-OLE WITH JOY WAS SWEET-LY SING-ING,
THE LIT-TLE BROOK WAS BAB'-LING ITS TUNE,
THE VIL-LAGE BELLS AT NOON WERE GAI-LY RING-ING,
THE WORLD SEEM'D BRIGHT-ER THAN A HAR-VEST MOON;
FOR THERE WITH-IN MY ARMS I GENT-LY PRESSED YOU,
AND BLUSH-ING RED, YOU SLOW-LY TURNED A-WAY,
I CAN'T FOR-GET THE WAY I ONCE CA-RESSED YOU;
I ON-LY PRAY WE'LL MEET AN-OTH-ER DAY.

Verse 2

I'VE REAL-LY COME A LONG WAY FROM THE CIT-Y,
AND THOUGH MY HEART IS BREAK-ING I'LL BE BRAVE,
I'VE BROUGHT THIS BUNCH OF FLOW'RS I THINK THEY'RE PRET-TY,
TO PLACE UP-ON A FRESH-LY MOULD-ED GRAVE;
IF YOU WILL SHOW ME, FA-THER, WHERE SHE'S LY-ING,
OR IF IT'S FAR JUST POINT IT OUT TO ME,
SAID HE, "SHE TOLD US ALL WHEN SHE WAS DY-ING,
TO BUR-Y HER BE-NEATH THE AP-PLE TREE."

Chorus

IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD AP-PLE TREE,
WHERE THE LOVE IN YOUR EYES I COULD SEE,
WHEN THE VOICE THAT I HEARD, LIKE THE SONG OF THE BIRD,
SEEM'D TO WHIS-PER SWEET MU-SIC TO ME;
I COULD HEAR THE DULL BUZZ OF THE BEE,
IN THE BLOS-SOMS AS YOU SAID TO ME,
WITH A HEART THAT IS TRUE, I'LL BE WAIT-ING FOR YOU,
IN THE SHADE OF THE OLD AP-PLE TREE.

(end)

Side By Side~Lyrics

Side By Side

Oh we ain't got a barrel of money
maybe we're ragged and funny,
But we'll travel along,
singing our song,
SIDE BY SIDE.
Don't know what's coming tomorrow,
maybe it's trouble and sorrow,
But we'll travel the road,
sharing our load,
SIDE BY SIDE.
Through all kinds of weather,
what if the sky should fall,
Just as long as we're together,
it doesn't matter at all.
When they've all had their troubles and parted,
We'll be the same as we started,
Just trav'ling along,
singing our song,
SIDE BY SIDE.

Red River Valley~Lyrics

Red River Valley

From this valley they say you are going,
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile,
For they say you are taking the sunshine
Which has brightened our pathways a while.

Chorus:
Come and sit by my side if you love me;
Do not hasten to bid me adieu,
But remember the Red River Valley,
And the girl that has loved you so true.

I've been thinking a long time, my darling,
Of the sweet words you never would say,
Now, alas, must my fond hopes all vanish?
For they say you are going away.
- Chorus

Won't you think of the valley you're leaving,
Oh, how lonely and sad it will be,
Just think of the fond heart you're breaking,
And the grief you are causing to me.
- Chorus

From this valley they say you are going,
When you go, may your darling go too?
Would you leave her behind unprotected,
When she loves no one other than you.
- Chorus

As you go to your home by the ocean,
May you never forget those sweet hours,
That we spent in the Red River Valley,
And the love we exchanged 'mid the flowers.
- Chorus

I have promised you, darling, that never
Will a word from my lips cause you pain,
And my life, it will be yours forever,
If you only will love me again.
- Chorus

They will bury me where you have wandered,
Near the hills where the daffodils grow,
When you're gone from the Red River valley,
For I can't live without you I know.
- Chorus

Down By the Old Mill Stream-Lyrics

Down by the Old Mill Stream

MY DARLING I AM DREAMING,
OF THE DAYS GONE BY,
WHEN YOU AND I WERE SWEETHEARTS,
BENEATH THE SUMMER SKY;
YOUR HAIR HAS TURNED TO SILVER,
THE GOLD HAS FADED TOO;
BUT STILL I WILL REMEMBER,
WHERE I FIRST MET YOU.

THE OLD MILL WHEEL IS SILENT,
AND HAS FALLEN DOWN,
THE OLD OAK TREE HAS WITHERED,
AND LIES THERE ON THE GROUND;
WHILE YOU AND I ARE SWEETHEARTS,
THE SAME AS DAYS OF YORE;
ALTHOUGH WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER,
FORTY YEARS OR MORE.

~Chorus~

DOWN BY THE OLD MILL STREAM,
WHERE I FIRST MET YOU,
WITH YOUR EYES OF BLUE,
DRESSED IN GINGHAM TOO.
IT WAS THERE I KNEW,
THAT YOU LOVED ME TRUE.
YOU WERE SIXTEEN,
MY VILLAGE QUEEN,
BY THE OLD MILL STREAM.

3.5 Performs Down by the Old Mill Stream

3.5 "Old Mill Steam" Cadet Cathedral Colorado Springs, CO Colorado Tour 2005 ---------------------------- This is a quartet from all around Ohio. Toledo, Marion, and Canton Ohio. We all met at Bowling Green State University where we also sang in the BGMC. This video is on tour at a stop called Cadet Cathedral in Colorado. The song is "Down by the old Mill Stream" and is a song with Ohio roots. Written by Tell Taler of findlay, Ohio wrote the original composition in 1910 when the song was published but was actually written in 1908 while he sat along the banks of the Blanchard River. The reason for the 2 year release gap was due to his close personal friends convincing him that the song had no commercial value. 4 Million copies later it is a staple in Barbershop arsenals. This is 3.5 singing "Down by the old Mill Stream" (left to right) Zach - Tenor 1 Skot - Lead Jared - Bass Chris - Baritone

I Dream of Jeannie (With the Light Brown Hair)-Lyrics

Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Borne like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way.
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour,
Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er.
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Floating like a vapor on the soft, summer air.

I sigh for Jeannie, but her light form strayed
Far from the fond parts round her native glade;
Her smiles have vanished and her sweet songs flown
Flitting like the dreams that have cheered us and gone.
Now the nodding wild flow'rs may wither on the shore,
While her gentle fingers will cull them no more;
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Floating like a vapor on the soft, summer air.

Repeat first verse.

I Dream of Jeannie (With the Light Brown Hair)

Robert Wilson - Jeannie with the light brown hair

I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair, Warm as a zephyr on the sweet summer air; I see her tripping where the bright streams play, Happy as the daisies that dance on her way. Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour, Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er: I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair, Floating, like a vapor, on the soft summer air. I long for Jeanie with the daydawn smile, Radiant in gladness, warm with winning guile; I hear her melodies, like joys gone by, Sighing round my heart o'er the fond hopes that die: Sighing like the night wind and sobbing like the rain, Wailing for the lost one that comes not again: I long for Jeanie, and my heart bows low, Never more to find her where the bright waters flow. Now the nodding wild flowers may wither on the shore While her gentle fingers will cull them no more: Oh! I sigh for Jeanie with the light brown hair, Floating, like a vapor, on the soft summer air.

OH, SUSANNA-Lyrics

OH, SUSANNA
(Stephen Foster)

I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee
I'm going to Louisiana, my true love for to see
It rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot, I froze to death
Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna, oh don't you cry for me
For I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee

I had a dream the other night when everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna a-coming down the hill
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth
The tear was in her eye
Says I, I'm coming from the south
Susanna, don't you cry

I jumped aboard de telegraph and trabbled down de [ribber,]
De 'lectric fluid magnified [and killed five hundred nigger.]
De bull-gine bust, de horse run off, I really thought I'd die
I shut my eyes to hold my breath,
Susanna, don't you cry.

I soon will be in New Orleans, and then I'll look around
And when I find Susanna I will fall upon de ground
And if I do not find her, [dis darkie'll surely die]**
And when I'm dead and buried, Susanna don't you cry.

Oh, Susanna

Clementine-Lyrics

Clementine
In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty niner,
And his daughter Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Drove she ducklings to the water
Ev'ry morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
But I kissed her little sister,
I forgot my Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine
