Why? Tales from Here and There about This and That
As I approached my 1000th post in Tales from Here and There about This and That, I was encouraged by Squidoo to make a lens about my ten favorite posts. Choosing ten posts out of 1000 is hard, particularly when 'Tales from Here and There about This and That' is an extremely eclectic blog covering such a wide variety of topics. You see, 'Tales from Here and There about This and That' was set up to indulge my urge to publish interesting snippets, pictures, comments and thoughts as they occurred. In many ways it has served as an online notebook but it seems that some readers have found my ramblings of interest and I am pleased to say that over the years, the occasional gem has surfaced.
My favourite posts in Tales from Here and There about This and That is therefore a window on five years of jottings and articles. Incidentally, I hope that the English spelling of favorite does not jar with American readers but Tales from Here and There .......... was originally published in the UK and I have stuck to the English spelling for consistency
The photograph of a genetically modified tomato plant is copyright Robert Woodrough and the subject of one of my favorite posts. Scroll down to read about Tomash.
Though my ryme be ragged,
Tattered and jagged,
Rudely rayne beaten,
Rusty and moth eaten,
It hath in it some pyth.

My favorite posts in Tales from Here and There about This and That
10 out of 1000!
- Truffles, wine and the ultimate activity vacation
- A Gourmet's Delight.
I am partial to Barolo; it is described as the king of wines and the wine of kings because of its regal characteristics. This splendid red from the Piedmont region of Italy conjures up visions of deep velvet; life takes on a mellow glow after a glass or two and learning that the 2000 vintage has just been released to high acclaim, had me salivating at the prospect of imbibing. ........................... - Earthly Pleasures
- Religious brewing on the banks of the Danube.
Picking up the Danube Cycle Route once more at Ulm, our journey along the Danube (Donau) starts to get serious now as we head towards the Alps. In this leg we will go through Donauwörth, an old trading port, Ingolstadt with its beautiful white Neues Schloß (castle), Kelheim with the magical Kloster Weltenburg, nestling on the river bank, near the entrance to the scenic Danube gorge and finally, reach the great Bavarian city of Regensburg.
Those German monks sure knew a thing or two about earthly pleasures, Weltenburg is the oldest monastery in Bavaria, founded around 600 AD, and interestingly the oldest monastic brewery in the world, they started brewing around 1050............................... - Medoc Marathon
- Last runner to finish gets the prize.
The course for the Médoc marathon reads like a wine list of the finest French wines. The route passes more than 50 chateaux and 22 are organised as refreshment stations, except that there is more than water on offer, expect to be treated to liberal quantities of the regions wines. ...................... - Om mani peme hung
- The mantra of Compassion sung by Dechen Shak-Da.
Haunting, calming, astounding.
Om mani peme hung is an incredible meditation aid and now the subject of one of my lenses: Mantra of-Compassion - New Year around the World
- Following the midnight hour around the world.
- Tomash
- An April Fool's Day spoof about a genetically modified Tomato!
- Bed Bugs
- Advice about how to deal with a global epidemic.
- Dummy Jim
- An incredible story of a pioneering adventure traveler.
Back in 1951, a deaf factory worker who had never learnt to speak, set off on a cycling adventure from his home in Buchan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. He took just a single blanket, a few jumpers and his diary. His remarkable adventure led him 3000 miles to the frozen plains of the Arctic Circle - Anniversaries in 2012.
- 2012 is London Olympic year but it turns out that the year has some interesting anniversaries.
Incredibly, it is also the 400th anniversary of the Cotswold Olimpicks at Chipping Campden, England. The event, which features many strange sports peculiar to the British countryside, such as Shin-Kicking, was started by Robert Dover back in 1612. - Micro Philanthropy
- Restores your faith in human beings.
It's called Micro-philanthropy but I wouldn't use the prefix 'micro' to describe any aspect of Mark Gold or the new Philanthropic movement that he has founded. He travels the globe, not for adventure, tourism or business but simply to make the world a better place.
An issue that matters to me
Sometimes I come across issues that make my blood boil but as a general rule I try to avoid direct political comment when writing posts. In part, this is to avoid offending some readers who may not see the world in quite the same way that I do. However, I do admit that sometimes I give a little virtual nudge ;-)
Do you think that politics have a place in a travel and tourism blog?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, the political situation is important.
MomwithAHook says:
As far as traveling in the country you are visiting goes, politics is spot on. Let's for example recall the Egyptian Riots not too long ago - we had friends traveling during that time - it was via blogs and travel forums that they knew that it was indeed safe to travel when they did.

Definitely if you want to suggest how one can survive if travelling abroad. It can make a difference also to whether or not one can get in and out of a country.

Absolutely. I would say that the political angle is essential, especially if one is considering worldwide travel. You may offend some, but you may save the very lives, of others!

I would have to say basically no, but then again yes :) Travel alerts can be found for countries that have safety issues, but if I want to see other Travel information, I want to see pictures and things. Sometimes a little blurb is also useful though for travelers especially women traveling alone.

No, we prefer to ignore the political situation.

- 1000 posts is very impressive, you have clearly mastered the fine art of blogging, unlike most of us who post for a month and then stop!
