Overcoming your fear of mathematics
Can you imagine a room full of children laughing and enjoying themselves in a class of mathematics? When was the last time you picked up a book on mathematics while browsing books in a bookshop? Did anyone ever tell you that mathematics is actually a language? Does algebra gives you the shivers? Does geometry seems just out of your grasp? Do your children look forward to learning mathematics?
Schools have come a long way since I was a child. The education system has been overhauled quite a bit to make it child-friendly. But the fear of mathematics remains intact.
The problem is that children do not understand why they need to learn mathematics. And by the time they do, fear of mathematics is already on them.
In this lens I have listed maths resources that will change the way you and your children learn mathematics. For ever.

The math books we are reading right now
Actually my boys and I read the books in the Murderous Maths series all the time. Some of these we have. The others we get from our local library. I am delighted by the way, my sons have taken to these books. The younger one - he is 8 - actually practices some of the sums. On his own.
The books are funny and wonderfully illustrated. Exactly the way maths should be learned. Once in a while, one of my my sons come running to me to tell me something that caught his interest. That is a great source of satisfaction to me.
I am glad we discovered this series.
Update: My younger son is now 10. And he still loves Mathematics.
Learning maths from others
This is actually an autobiography of a young girl (as she was then). Sarah Flannery won the 1999 European Young Scientist Of The Year Award. Read this to learn how to inspire children to start loving mathematics. One day at a time.
I specially loved the idea of have a white board in the house to inculcate hands on. And this applies to all subjects - not just mathematics.
The book is very inspiring and perfect for children who have already started off for some time on Murderous Maths series.
If you want to know where is Sarah now, read my blog
Essential maths book for teachers and parents
No teacher should be allowed to teach any subject, leave alone mathematics, if this book is not understood. It is a classic and teaches you step by step how to teach mathematics. The classic by Polya should be read by all parents and as you child grows up by them too. It is a thin book and will not repulse your child.
It will surprise you to know that How To Solve It is a favourite among software engineers!!
A brilliant maths book: Journey Through Genius
I wish I had read this book just before I joined college. The author has taken a few very important and fundamental theorems, set them against their historical context and annotate the derivation. There is nothing more complicated than high school maths and therefore all the more pleasant to read. However, it is the story behind each of these great theorems that make the book worth treasuring.

Finally! Maths books that don't assume their readers to be dumb
Are you sick and tired of pop-mathematics that think the reader is dumb and therefore any book on mathematics, to sell, needs to dumb down the content. Well, here is an exception. Read this book, explore it, covet it, and learn what a good book on mathematics should be like.
This book discusses the essence a) The Game Theory, b) Topology, c) Singularity Theory, d) Theory of Computation, and e) Optimization Theory.
These are five great theories of the 20th century. It is easy read without dumbing down the essential. You won't regret reading this.
And what is more, you may be inclined to try out the next one too - Five More Golden Rules.

- Glad to have found your information on fear of math. I've been putting together a program to overcome math fear, for children, teachers and parents and any adult. It is a stifling problem that gets in the way of learning the essentials in math.
Good lens!

- I agree, it's important to make learning fun, be it math or any other subject. I guess fear for math is indeed real and sets in if not dealt with at the right time. I somehow liked math, but more for its practicality.

- Hi, sorry for the delayed response. The easiest way to make kids love maths is to make them enjoy it. The Murderous Maths series I have listed in this lens is a good way. The books are fun. I have seen the impact of these on my younger son. He is in 4th standard and just the other day he solved the first 3 questions of a sample paper of class 9. When I asked him how he knew the answers, he said he has read it in murderous maths. So, that's what I can advise. Make maths fun.
