How to Overcome Your Fear of Flight

People are always trying to come to terms with their fears. Many have small ones, while others have fears on a far larger scale. One of the hardest ones to conquer is trying to overcome ones fear of flying.


When you think of the number of airplane accidents there are in comparison to the number of auto accidents, the risk of getting hurt while flying is extremely low. But there are people that are terrified to fly. Some people have panic attacks there fears are so great. Others become nauseous and vomit just by thinking about flying.


There are methods available for those that have this fear. Some people get hypnotized. They find that this brings them to a calm state of mind when the time for a flight is coming. Other people take courses to help them understand why they are afraid. Both of these solutions have had good track records when it comes to the results that have come from them.


Other people find that it is necessary to take muscle relaxants or tranquilizer type medications in order to be able to even step foot on a plane. These people are extreme cases that are monitored by their physician's in order that they are given an appropriate dosage to calm them but not overmedicate them. This does work but it is definitely not a recommended solution.


No matter how one accomplishes getting past this fear, the ones that are successful deserve a lot of credit. Overcoming the fear of flying is an extremely difficult fear for anyone to conquer. Just like anyone that overcomes something that they are afraid of they deserve a lot of credit. Fear is a very hard thing to get past and those that do have a tremendous amount of courage.

The fear of flight has also been a key element of the personalities of several notable fictional characters, including:
  • Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas: Charles Grodin's character in Midnight Run. He claims to have this phobia, among others.
  • B. A. Baracus of the TV series The A-Team. He is often drugged or otherwise knocked out by his friends so that they can get him onto a plane.
  • Adrian Monk from the TV series Monk. He did achieve getting on a plane by the end of the first season however.
  • Carla Tortelli from the TV series Cheers.
  • Raymond Babbitt in the 1988 film Rain Man. An autistic man who refuses to fly on any airline for fear of it crashing--except Qantas, which he claims has never had a crash.
  • Jack Ryan, protagonist of most novels by Tom Clancy.
  • Marge Simpson , although she later overcame her fear of flying, before being involved in a minor air crash. (Episode 2F08, "Fear of Flying")
  • Maris Crane, of Frasier, due to a bad experience of being "bumped" from first class.
