Adding Feathers to Your Hair

We can thank Steven Tyler for bringing back the feather hair extension trend in 2011.

Hackles (long, narrow, vibrant tail feathers from roosters) are being used as hair extensions. They add color and texture to your hair. The feathers can be dyed, curled, straightened, and washed. They can last for months when well cared for.

My 10 year old daughter couldn't wait to get her feather hair extension. Some of her friends had them and it was now the must have item on her list. We were going to find a local salon that had them, but while we were at the Topsfield Fair we happened upon a booth that offered them, so in the chair she went. She got a single, deep-red/brown synthetic extension for $8.

I thought they were braided in, but I was wrong. They are just kept in place by flattening a micro bead at the top. It was super quick to put in, and watching it got me thinking it would be easy to do yourself at home. Below you'll find everything you need to put in your own feather hair extensions.

What You'll Need

  • Feathers
  • A Silicone Hair Extension Bead
  • Hook or Threader Tool
  • Needle Nose or Jewelry Pliers
  • Scissors
Gather a small section of hair in your fingers. Slide the crimp bead to the hair roots with the help of a threader tool, and carefully slip the feather bundle through the bead. Use pliers to firmly crimp the bead so it will lie flat against the head. You can trim extra feathers sticking through the bead with scissors. And you are done.
