The Surf Legend - The Fender Jaguar

Welcome to my page on the Fender Jaguar!

Introduced in 1962 fully intended for the surf music industry, this electric guitar was a massaged version of the Fender JazzMaster which was introduced in the late 1950s. It fore-ran the Telecaster in the design of the short, 22 fret neck.

When introduced it was outfitted with better pickups than the JazzMaster and was actually touted as Fender's top of the line guitar. Even though it was never a popular design for the mainstream guitar company.  It has however became a cult guitar for several genres.

Why don't you try one out for size?

Features of the Jaguar

Many new ideas and hot tech on this guitar as it was first unleashed.

  • Offset "waist" neck
  • Shorter 24 inch scale; 22 fret neck
  • Floating Tremolo
  • The midboost switch, also known as the "strangle" switch
  • Improved Rf interference shielding and better pickups
  • Was available in 14 custom colors

A Cult Guitar - Twice!

As I said the Jag was first coined as a surf music guitar and was widely used as one along side the Strat and Tele.

They were somewhat hard to tech because of the new floating tremolo design and the string mute system. Those who tech'ed these guitars properly became masters of the Jag, but it was quickly hated by many who just didn't understand.

The Jag isn't for everybody, and it's design doesn't lend itself to other genre's easily. Heavy distortion could be catastrophic. And that isn't easily remedied. Besides that would be trying to reinvent the Mag wheel. It's a classic, it's expensive, and it is only for a certain style.

But - IF you want the look, there are other options. I will list those below.

"You said, cult guitar twice!"

Yeah, there were a good number of top grunge and alternative musicians that started a rebirth of the fanatacism of this wonderful guitar and caused Fender to reissue. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, and John Fruscianti of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and several others had modified or original Jaguars, the cheaper Mustang or a sweetly modified kit-bash of the two.

Cobain's JagStang is probably the most notable as it was heavily modified and a lefty, with the wiring actually done with mostly Gibson Les Paul electronics.

And now as of 2006 there is a Fender Precision Bass powered 4 string bass with the Jaguar body.

Dude, you spelled Kurt's last name wrong. It was Kurt Cobain(with a C not a K).
Just thought you might like to know.

I had a jaguar bass once. It was the only bass I have ever played that it was easy to bend the strings.

Wow! Had absolutely no idea about the Fender Jaguar -- as you know, with Jaguar a part of my ID, I had to check this out -- was actually expecting a fender with jaguar print. Looks like a cool guitar -- so glad to have you in our traveling squid project!
